Abstract A combined analytical, theoretical, and experimental study has shown that the vaping of vitamin E acetate has the potential to produce exceptionally toxic ketene gas, which may be a contributing factor to the upsurge in pulmonary injuries associated with using e-cigarette/vaping products. Additionally, the pyrolysis of vitamin E acetate also produces carcinogen alkenes and benzene for which the negative long-term medical effects are well recognized. As temperatures reached in vaping devices can be equivalent to a laboratory pyrolysis apparatus, the potential for unexpected chemistries to take place on individual components within a vape mixture is high. Educational programs to inform of the danger are now required, as public perception has grown that vaping is not harmful.

Abstract Mannan-rich fraction (MRF) isolated from Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been studied for its beneficial impact on animal intestinal health. Herein, we examined how MRF affected the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), impacting antibiotic susceptibility in resistant Escherichia coli through the modulation of bacterial metabolism. The role of MRF in effecting proteomic change was examined using a proteomics-based approach. The results showed that MRF, when combined with bactericidal antibiotic treatment, increased ROS production in resistant E. coli by 59.29 ± 4.03% compared to the control ( p ≤ 0.05). We further examined the effect of MRF alone and in combination with antibiotic treatment on E. coli growth and explored how MRF potentiates bacterial susceptibility to antibiotics via proteomic changes in key metabolic pathways. Herein we demonstrated that MRF supplementation in the growth media of ampicillin-resistant E. coli had a significant impact on the normal translational control of the central metabolic pathways, including those involved in the glycolysis–TCA cycle ( p ≤ 0.05).

Abstract Aims: The non-invasive estimation of left ventricular filling pressures (LVFPs) represents a main goal in the clinical setting. Current recommendations encourage the use of pulsed-wave Tissue Doppler for calculating the ratio between the preload-dependent transmitral E velocity and the average of septal and lateral early diastolic velocities (e') of the mitral annulus. Despite its wide use, real utility of the E/e' ratio has been recently challenged in patients with either very advanced heart failure or preserved left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction. However, only few studies performed the invasive and non-invasive estimation of LVFP simultaneously. The EURO-FILLING Study will validate the E/e' ratio (and additional non-invasive estimates) against simultaneously measured LVFP obtained by left heart catheterization in a multicentre study involving reference European echo laboratories collecting a wide population sample size of cardiac patients with and without heart failure.
Methods and results: The EURO-FILLING study is a large, prospective observational study in which simultaneous assessment of invasive and non-invasive measurements of LVFP will be acquired in eight reference European centres. Centralized reading of the collected parameters will be performed in a core laboratory. Not only standardized echo Doppler measurements but also novel echo parameters such as LV global longitudinal strain and global atrial strain (obtainable by two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography) will be tested for predicting invasive measurements of LVFP.
Conclusions: The EURO-FILLING study is expected to provide important information on non-invasive assessment of LVFP and to contribute to the standardization of this assessment in clinical practice.

Abstract Background: Hepatitis E is an acute viral disease of humans, occurring in explosive outbreaks in the developing world and as sporadic cases in returning travellers. Increasing recognition of indigenous transmission in Western countries suggests a zoonotic source of infection, most likely pigs. To determine if hepatitis E virus is present in Irish pigs, sera from 330 animals were examined for antibodies using a commercially available ELISA.
Findings: Antibodies were detected in 89 pigs (27%) in 13 herds (81%).
Conclusions: Hepatitis E virus is present in most Irish pig herds and in many animals within these herds.
