    Abstract In modern society, demanding and stressful events contribute to increased fatigue in adults. Moreover, fatigue is the most prevalent symptom of long coronavirus disease 2019. Fatigue is a subjective feeling of tiredness that can be attributed to various causes. This cross-sectional study investigated factors affecting physical and mental fatigue in adults living in South Korea. Self-reported data were collected through an online survey conducted between July 11 and July 17, 2021. The final sample comprised 362 participants, excluding those with uncertain responses. The collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 27.0. General characteristics and variables of the participants were examined through descriptive statistical analysis. Differences in fatigue level according to the general characteristics of the participants were analyzed using t tests and one-way analysis of variance. The correlation between variables was analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficients. To investigate factors affecting fatigue, stepwise multiple regression analysis was conducted. The overall level of fatigue according to participants' general characteristics differed significantly based on alcohol use, economic status, number of chronic diseases, stress, depression, and sleep problems. Factors affecting physical fatigue were depression, sleep problems, General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) scores, and number of chronic diseases. The factors affecting mental fatigue were depression, GHQ-12 score, and alcohol use. The variables that had the most significant impact on overall fatigue were alcohol consumption, the number of chronic illnesses, depression, and GHQ-12, in that order. This emphasizes the importance of lifestyle improvement and dietary management in adults for preventing chronic diseases and managing mental health. The results of this study should be considered when planning health services to provide fatigue interventions for Korean adults.

    Abstract Background: As amyotrophic lateral sclerosis/motor neuron disease (ALS/MND) is a fatal progressive neurodegenerative disorder, patients experience severe impairments, with patients and family caregivers facing emotional distress and exhaustion. Several psychosocial interventions are aimed at providing tailored support for ALS/MND patients and caregivers. The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review and present a comprehensive overview of psychosocial interventions designed for individuals and families affected by ALS/MND, while also pinpointing research gaps.
    Methods: This scoping review utilized Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework to investigate psychosocial interventions designed for individuals with ALS/MND and their families. The study adhered to the PRISMA-ScR checklist for reporting.
    Results: A total of 27 articles describing 25 interventions met the inclusion criteria. The predominant interventions observed in the research encompassed education-related strategies, closely followed by behavior therapy, counseling, social support interventions, and psychotherapy interventions. Across the majority of the studies, findings indicated promising feasibility and acceptability of these interventions. Notably, a significant proportion of quantitative investigations yielded one or more statistically significant effects, while qualitative studies consistently reported favorable outcomes, including enhancements in well-being and heightened awareness of individual circumstances.
    Conclusions: Given the progressive and debilitating nature of this condition, coupled with the absence of a cure, the adoption of a psychosocial approach can prove beneficial for both ALS/MND patients and their families. However, high-quality RCTs with a large sample size are recommended to examine and confirm the effectiveness.

    Abstract Despite recent studies indicating a significant correlation between somatosensory deficits and rehabilitation outcomes, how prevailing somatosensory deficits affect stroke survivors' ability to correct their movements and recover overall remains unclear. To explore how major deficits in somatosensory systems impede stroke survivors' motor correction to various external loads, we conducted a study with 13 chronic stroke survivors who had hemiparesis. An inertial, elastic, or viscous load, which was designed to impose perturbing forces with various force profiles, was introduced unexpectedly during the reaching task using a programmable haptic robot. Participants' proprioception and cutaneous sensation were also assessed using passive movement detection, finger-to-nose, mirror, repositioning, and Weinstein pressure tests. These measures were then analyzed to determine whether the somatosensory measures significantly correlated with the estimated reaching performance parameters, such as initial directional error, positional deviation, velocity deviations, and speed of motor correction were measured. Of 13 participants, 5 had impaired proprioception, as they could not recognize the passive movement of their elbow joint, and they kept showing larger initial directional errors even after the familiarization block. Such continuously found inaccurate initial movement direction might be correlated with the inability to develop the spatial body map especially for calculating the initial joint torques when starting the reaching movement. Regardless of whether proprioception was impaired or not, all participants could show the stabilized, constant reaching movement trajectories. This highlights the role of proprioception especially in the execution of a planned movement at the early stage of reaching movement.

    Abstract Background: Granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a pro-inflammatory cytokine secreted by various immune cells. Several studies have demonstrated an expansion of GM-CSF producing T cells in the blood or CSF of people with MS (pwMS). However, whether this equates to greater concentrations of circulating cytokine remains unknown as quantification is difficult with traditional assays.
    Objective: To determine whether GM-CSF can be quantified and whether GM-CSF levels are elevated in pwMS.
    Methods: We employed Single Molecule Array (Simoa) to measure GM-CSF in both CSF and blood. We then investigated relationships between GM-CSF levels and measures of blood-CSF-barrier integrity.
    Results: GM-CSF was quantifiable in all samples and was significantly higher in the CSF of pwMS compared with controls. No association was found between CSF GM-CSF levels and Q-Albumin - a measure of blood-CSF-barrier integrity. CSF GM-CSF correlated with measures of intrathecal inflammation, and these relationships were greater in primary progressive MS compared with relapsing-remitting MS.
    Conclusion: GM-CSF levels are elevated specifically in the CSF of pwMS. Our results suggest that elevated cytokine levels may reflect (at least partial) intrathecal production, as opposed to simple diffusion across a dysfunctional blood-CSF-barrier.

    Abstract This study presents a simple and effective method for fabricating a porous photocatalyst composite membrane with excellent wet strength, utilizing cellulose nanofibril (CNF) and zinc oxide-silver (ZnO-Ag) nanorod (NRs) for treating dye-contaminated water. The self-standing CNF membrane with a high wet strength was prepared by NaOH treatment. Besides wet strength, NaOH treatment also controlled the pore characteristics of the CNF membrane, which could tightly attach NRs in them. The photocatalyst composite was prepared by simply drop-drying ZnO-Ag NRs onto the CNF membrane, ensuring attachment within the pores. The photocatalytic activity of the composite was evaluated for the degradation of the methylene blue dye under visible light. Despite the straightforward drop-drying method used to cast the ZnO-Ag NRs onto the CNF membrane, the NRs were not washed out when in contact with water, resulting in a composite that exhibited both high photocatalytic activity and high wet strength. This exceptional performance can be attributed to the tight attachment of the photocatalytic ZnO-Ag NRs to the porous structure of the CNF. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated satisfactory reusability, as no significant deterioration in the photocatalytic performance was observed even after being reused for three cycles. Given its simple preparation method, impressive photocatalytic performance, and durability, we expect that our composite will hold significant value for practical applications in wastewater treatment.

    Abstract Purpose: To investigate the feasibility of commissioning the 16 MeV electron FLASH Extension (FLEX) in the commercial treatment planning system (TPS) for biomedical research with cell and mouse models, and in silico treatment planning studies.
    Methods: To commission the FLEX system with the electron Monte Carlo (eMC) algorithm in the commercial TPS, radiochromic film was used to measure the vendor-recommended beam data. Once the beam model was generated for the eMC algorithm, supplemental measurements were collected for validation purposes and compared against the TPS-calculated results. Additionally, the newly commissioned 16 MeV FLASH beam was compared to the corresponding 16 MeV conventional electron beam.
    Results: The eMC algorithm effectively modeled the FLEX system. The eMC-calculated PDDs and profiles for the 16 MeV electron FLASH beam agreed with measured values within 1%, on average, for 6 × 6 cm
    Conclusions: The FLEX system was successfully commissioned in the commercial TPS using the eMC algorithm, which accurately modeled the forward-peaked nature of the FLASH beam. A commissioned TPS for FLASH will be useful for pre-clinical cell and animal studies, as well as in silico FLASH treatment planning studies for future clinical implementation.

    Abstract This study aimed to develop and evaluate a sarcopenia prediction model by fusing numerical features from shear-wave elastography (SWE) and gray-scale ultrasonography (GSU) examinations, using the rectus femoris muscle (RF) and categorical/numerical features related to clinical information. Both cohorts (development, 70 healthy subjects; evaluation, 81 patients) underwent ultrasonography (SWE and GSU) and computed tomography. Sarcopenia was determined using skeletal muscle index calculated from the computed tomography. Clinical and ultrasonography measurements were used to predict sarcopenia based on a linear regression model with the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regularization. Furthermore, clinical and ultrasonography features were combined at the feature and score levels to improve sarcopenia prediction performance. The accuracies of LASSO were 70.57 ± 5.00-81.54 ± 4.83 (clinical) and 69.00 ± 4.52-69.73 ± 5.47 (ultrasonography). Feature-level fusion of clinical and ultrasonography (accuracy, 70.29 ± 6.63 and 83.55 ± 4.32) showed similar performance with clinical features. Score-level fusion by AdaBoost showed the best performance (accuracy, 73.43 ± 6.57-83.17 ± 5.51) in the development and evaluation cohorts, respectively. This study might suggest the potential of machine learning fusion techniques to enhance the accuracy of sarcopenia prediction models and improve clinical decision-making in patients with sarcopenia.
