Abstract Introduction: The mounting evidence that osteoclasts play an important role in osteoarthritis (OA) pain lead us to investigate the effects of L-006235, a potent and selective inhibitor of cathepsin K, on pain behaviour and joint pathology in a model of OA pain.
Methods: Effects of preventative (30 and 100 mg/kg) and therapeutic (100 mg/kg) oral dosing with L-006235 on weight-bearing asymmetry, hind paw withdrawal thresholds, cartilage and bone pathology, synovial inflammation, and drug exposure were studied in the monosodium iodoacetate rat model of OA pain.
Results: Preventative L-006235 inhibited weight-bearing asymmetry from day 14, with this measure nearly abolished by the higher dose. In the same treatment setting, L-006235 prevented lowering of hind paw withdrawal thresholds from day 7. Exposure to L-006235 in plasma was higher for the 100 mg/kg dose, compared with 30 mg/kg. Therapeutic dosing with L-006235 from day 14 significantly inhibited weight-bearing asymmetry, compared with monosodium iodoacetate vehicle rats. Regression analysis revealed a significant interaction coefficient of the effects of L-006235 on weight-bearing asymmetry and synovitis score, but not for cartilage damage nor osteophyte scores.
Conclusion: Our novel finding that cathepsin K inhibition is analgesic in a clinically relevant model of OA pain provides new evidence for the therapeutic potential of this target.

Abstract Using 13.53 fb(-1) of CLEO data, we have measured the ratios of the branching fractions R(+)(e),R(+)(mu) and the combined branching fraction ratio R(+)(l), defined by R(+)(l)=[B(D+-->K(*0)l(+)nu(l))]/[B(D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+))]. We find R(+)(e)=0.74+/-0.04+/-0.05, R(+)(mu)=0.72+/-0.10+/-0.05, and R(+)(l)=0.74+/-0.04+/-0.05, where the first and second errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The known branching fraction B(D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+)) leads to B(D+-->K(*0)e(+)nu(e))=(6.7+/-0.4+/-0.5+/-0.4)%, B(D+-->K(*0)mu(+)nu(mu))=(6.5+/-0.9+/-0.5+/-0.4)%, and B(D+-->K(*0)l(+)nu(l))=(6.7+/-0.4+/-0.5+/-0.4)%, where the third error is due to the uncertainty in B(D+-->K-pi(+)pi(+)).

Abstract Many factors influence the efficiency of insect pheromone trapping systems. In particular, captures of male oak processionary moth (OPM) Thaumetopoea processionea in pheromone traps can be highly variable, hence, two trials were conducted to determine whether the tree species in which traps are positioned or edge effects are influential factors in OPM pheromone trapping. In a ‘host plant trial’, pheromone traps that were positioned in the canopy of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur) trees captured significantly more male OPM than traps positioned in any of the other six tree species (including other species of oak) used in the trial over two successive years. In an ‘edge effects trial’, pheromone traps positioned on the edges of oak woodland blocks captured more moths than traps positioned within the oak woodland itself. Although wind direction influenced the numbers of moths that were captured in pheromone traps on woodland edges, with more moths captured in traps positioned on sheltered north‐facing edges, the differences in trap catches between north, south, east and west edges were not significant. The results from the present study indicate that a greater emphasis should be taken to deploy pheromone traps for oak processionary moth in the canopies of pedunculate oak trees with an open, sunnier disposition rather than within the interior of the forest or woodland, thereby maximizing their efficiency.

Abstract We investigate the decays D(0)-->pi(-)l(+)nu and D(0)-->K(-)l(+)nu, where l is e or mu, using approximately 7 fb(-1) of data collected with the CLEO III detector. We find R(0) identical with B(D(0)-->pi(-)e(+)nu)/B(D(0)-->K(-)e(+)nu)=0.082+/-0.006+/-0.005. Fits to the kinematic distributions of the data provide parameters describing the form factor of each mode. Combining the form factor results and R(0) gives |f(pi)(+)(0)|(2)|V(cd)|(2)/|f(K)(+)(0)|(2)|V(cs)|(2)=0.038(+0.006+0.005)(-0.007-0.003).

Abstract We present results from a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decays B-->Kl(+)l(-) and B-->K(*)l(+)l(-), where l(+)l(-) is either an e(+)e(-) or mu(+)mu(-) pair. The data sample comprises 22.7 x 10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->B(-)B decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II B Factory. We obtain the 90% C.L. upper limits B(B-->Kl(+)l(-))<0.51 x 10(-6) and B(B-->K(*)l(+)l(-))<3.1 x 10(-6), close to standard model predictions for these branching fractions. We have also obtained limits on the lepton-family-violating decays B-->Ke+/-mu(-/+) and B-->K(*)e(+/-)mu(-/+).

Abstract Reaction of potassium diphenylphosphide with elemental selenium is shown to give [K(Se(2)PPh(2))(THF)(2)](2) 1, which further reacts with InCl(3) to yield [In(Se(2)PPh(2))(3)] 2. Crystallization of 2 from either THF or PhMe gave 2.THF or 2.PhMe, respectively, both of which form loosely linked dimers in the solid state via Se...Se intermolecular van der Waals interactions. Decomposition of 2 has been studied by TGA.

Abstract Palynomorphs were studied in samples from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 189, Hole 1168A (slope of the western margin of Tasmania; 2463 m water depth). Besides organic-walled dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts), broad categories of other palynomorphs were quantified in terms of relative abundance. In this contribution, we provide an overview of the early late Eocene-Quaternary dinocyst distribution and illustrate main trends in palynomorph distribution.
Dinocyst species throughout Hole 1168A are largely cosmopolitan with important contributions of typical low-latitude taxa and virtual absence of endemic Antarctic taxa. Dinocyst stratigraphic distribution broadly matches that known from the Northern Hemisphere and equatorial regions, although significant differences are noted. Selected potentially biochronostratigraphically useful events are summarized. The distribution of dinocysts in the middle-upper Miocene interval is rather patchy, probably due to prolonged exposure to oxygen. An important general aspect in the dinocyst assemblages is the near absence of Antarctic endemic species and the apparent influence of relatively warm waters throughout the succession at Site 1168. General palynomorph distribution indicates continued deepening from an initial shallow, even restricted, marine setting from late Eocene-Quaternary times. A curious massive influx of small skolochorate acritarchs is recorded throughout the late early-early middle Miocene; the significance of this signal is not yet understood. A general long-term oligotrophic nature of the surface waters influencing Site 1168 is suggested from the low abundance of (proto) peridinioid, presumably heterotrophic, species.
The overall dinocyst distribution pattern corresponds to the long-term existence of a Leeuwin-like current influencing the region, including Site 1168, confirming results of earlier studies on other microfossil groups. The occasional influence of colder surface water conditions is, however, also apparent, notably during the late Pliocene-Quaternary, indicating the potential of high-resolution dinocyst analysis for future paleoceanographic studies.
