Abstract This article proposes an inverted U-shape relationship between air pollution and criminal behavior. Exposure increases criminality by raising criminals’ taste for risk and violent behavior while also reducing it by changing the number of felons and crime opportunities in the market through exacerbated morbidity and avoidance behavior. I illustrate both mechanisms with an expected utility model of the decision to delict and a simplified search and matching frictions model between criminals and crime opportunities. Linear, quadratic, and nonparametric Poisson pseudo-maximum likelihood estimator panel models confirm this bell-shaped relationship for Mexico City and New York, suggesting that the linear association between pollution and criminality uncovered by late studies may be better estimated with nonlinear models.

Title translation Subjective well-being, health status, functional capacity and social participation in Chilean older people.
Abstract Background: Chile is currently updating the Comprehensive Policy on Positive Aging, which establishes a positive association between Subjective Well-being, Self-perceived Health, Functional status, and Social Participation in older people.
Aim: To study the relationship between Subjective Well-being, General Health, Functional status, and Social Participation in older people in Chile.
Material and methods: In a cross-sectional observational study, 2.031 people aged 60 years and over were included in the National Health Survey 2016-2017 (ENS). The study included analysis of correlations between the relevant variables, in addition to binomial logistic regression with Subjective Well-being as a response variable, as well as the application of structural equation techniques (SEM).
Results: Subjective Well-being had a positive association with Self-perceived Health (Rho = 0.370), functional status (Rho = 0.360), and Social Participation (Rho = 0.290). However, in the logistic regression analysis only Self-perceived Health (OR = 0.293) and Functional status (OR = 0.932) had predictive capacity for Subjective Well-being.
Conclusions: The relevance of Self-perceived Health and Functionality in the sensation of Well-being among older people, reinforces the need to improve health care within a framework of a comprehensive policy for this age group.

Summary: Background: Multimorbidity is a health problem that affects a significant proportion of people in the world and is associated with the epidemiological transition to chronic no communicable diseases (NCDs) and population aging. It is important to note that NCDs do not occur randomly, but rather tend to be grouped according to epidemiological patterns. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify groups of comorbidities of NCD in the Chilean population aged 15 years and over. Method: For this purpose, ...

Abstract Background: The adherence of the elderly to therapeutic programs, either they are pharmacological or psychosocial, is generally low.
Objective: Identifying predictive variables of adherence of a social program from elderly with multifunctional independence or mild dependence.
Method: Prospective longitudinal design with 104 elderly participants in a social program. The inclusion criteria were: to participate in a social program for elderly, present functional independence or mild dependence, without depression clinically confirmed. Descriptive analyzes were performed with the study variables in addition to hypothesis testing and linear and logistic regression models to identify predictive variables of adherence.
Results: 22% of the participants met the minimum adherence, observing better compliance in younger people (p = 0.004), among those who had a better Health-Related Quality of Life (p = 0.036) and better health literacy levels (p = 0.017). According to a linear regression model, the variables associated with adherence were: social program of origin (OR = 5,122), perception of social support (OR = 1,170), cognitive status (OR = 2,537).
Conclusion: The level of adherence of the older people of the study can be evaluated as low, which is consistent with the findings of the specialized literature. The variables identified with predictive capacity on adherence were social program of origin, a condition that can be incorporated into the design of the interventions in order to facilitate territorial equity. It is also important to highlight the importance of health literacy and the risk of dysphagia in the level of adherence.

Abstract Streptomyces, the main source of antibiotics essential for human health, are widely distributed in nature among terrestrial, oceanic and atmospheric environments. New trends in antibiotic discovery are focused in the search for novel bioactive strains in unexplored habitats. We provide here evidence of the presence of diverse Streptomyces populations in wild bird feathers, such as the seagull, Larus michahellis, collected at Northern Spain; the sparrow, Passer domesticus, and the hoopoe, Upupa epops, both collected in Southern Spain. Taxonomic identification of fourteen bioactive strains, by sequencing their 16S rRNA gene and phylogenetic analyses, revealed that all of them are homologous to a total of 10 different Streptomyces. Strains from seagull samples are homologous to other antibiotic producers previously isolated from atmospheric, marine and terrestrial environments in the Cantabrian Sea region, Northern Spain. Isolates form Southern feather samples, from a house sparrow and a Eurasian hoopoe, are homologues to Streptomyces strains previously isolated mainly from soils along the Mediterranean region. The most relevant feature is that they are producers of diverse antibiotics with activity against Gram-positive, Gram-negative bacteria and fungi. We report here the successful activation of silent antibiotic biosynthetic pathways in response to changes in environmental conditions, such as incubation temperature and salinity of the culture medium, in agreement with the OSMAC approach, One Strain Many Compounds. The finding of bioactive Streptomyces in bird's plumage might be of relevance, not only in the ecology of Streptomyces-birds associations, but also in medicine and biotechnology since they can be regarded as a potential source for novel antibiotics.
