Abstract Beyond those to whom neuroscientists typically communicate exciting discoveries-that is, those who can provide more funding for researchers-there are important audiences that are positioned to use neuroscience findings to affect policy and improve societal outcomes. Showing the utility of research that policymakers, service providers, and the public can use to make decisions will enhance views of the value of scientific research. The ingredients of successful communications between neuroscientists and other stakeholders are different from those that characterize effective communications between scientists. Here, we discuss our experiences in the communication of the science of early childhood and brain development and our recommendations to help neuroscientists better communicate the benefits of their research to those who make practice and policy decisions.

Abstract Human beings think in metaphor and reason through analogy. The metaphors through which we think influence how we understand and feel about social issues as well as the actions that we see as appropriate and important. Metaphors can be used to increase understanding of how issues work and increase the salience of a given issue, build support for programs and policies necessary to address the issue, and instigate demand for change and civic action. In this paper, we use a mixed methods research design, including brief qualitative interviews, experimental surveys, and focus groups, to test the ability of different metaphors to influence public understanding of the social determinants of child abuse and neglect in the UK. We find one metaphor in particular that improves people’s understanding of the social causes of child maltreatment and increases support for structural solutions. This metaphor can be used to build support for preventative public health solutions.

Abstract Thec-erbB-2 proto-oncogene encodes a 190-kD putative membrane receptor that shows considerable homology to the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor.c-erbB-2 is overexpressed in many human tumors but has not previously been studied in pituitary tumors. In the normal pituitary gland, EGF is believed to play a regulatory role, but EGF receptors were found to be absent in a study of 22 pituitary adenomas. In the present study, 32 human pituitary adenomas and 7 samples of normal human pituitary were stained for thec-erbB-2 oncoprotein. All were negative for membrane staining, which suggests that amplification of thec-erbB-2 oncogene is not important in the etiology and progression of human pituitary adenomas.

Abstract Importance: Although peer review is an important component of publication for new research, the viability of this process has been questioned, particularly with the added stressors of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Objective: To characterize rates of peer reviewer acceptance of invitations to review manuscripts, reviewer turnaround times, and editor-assessed quality of reviews before and after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic at a large, open-access general medical journal.
Design, setting, and participants: This retrospective, pre-post cohort study examined all research manuscripts submitted to JAMA Network Open between January 1, 2019, and June 29, 2021, either directly or via transfer from other JAMA Network journals, for which at least 1 peer review of manuscript content was solicited. Measures were compared between the period before the World Health Organization declaration of a COVID-19 pandemic on March 11, 2020 (14.3 months), and the period during the pandemic (15.6 months) among all reviewed manuscripts and between pandemic-period manuscripts that did or did not address COVID-19.
Main outcomes and measures: For each reviewed manuscript, the number of invitations sent to reviewers, proportions of reviewers accepting invitations, time in days to return reviews, and editor-assessed quality ratings of reviews were determined.
Results: In total, the journal sought review for 5013 manuscripts, including 4295 Original Investigations (85.7%) and 718 Research Letters (14.3%); 1860 manuscripts were submitted during the prepandemic period and 3153 during the pandemic period. Comparing the prepandemic with the pandemic period, the mean (SD) number of reviews rated as high quality (very good or excellent) per manuscript increased slightly from 1.3 (0.7) to 1.5 (0.7) (P < .001), and the mean (SD) time for reviewers to return reviews was modestly shorter (from 15.8 [7.6] days to 14.4 [7.0] days; P < .001), a difference that persisted in linear regression models accounting for manuscript type, study design, and whether the manuscript addressed COVID-19.
Conclusions and relevance: In this cohort study, the speed and editor-reported quality of peer reviews in an open-access general medical journal improved modestly during the initial year of the pandemic. Additional study will be necessary to understand how the pandemic has affected reviewer burden and fatigue.

Abstract Thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy is a complex disease whose pathogenesis is thought to be autoimmune. Evidence has accumulated to implicate lymphocytes, antibodies, and cytokines targeting the orbital tissues whose structural and functional characteristics are unique. Epitope sharing between the orbit and the thyroid is the likely explanation for the close association of ophthalmopathy with autoimmune thyroid disease. Environmental and other nonautoimmune factors are identified that also play a part in the initiation or perpetuation of the disease process.
