Abstract The exercise electrocardiography test (EET) is still used before coronary angiography in the diagnosis of chronic coronary syndromes. This study aimed to demonstrate the value of the combination of a positive EET with the systemic inflammatory index (SII), the plasma atherogenic index (PAI), and the monocyte/HDL-C ratio (MHR) in the determination of obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD). This single-center, retrospective study included 540 patients who underwent coronary angiography after ETT. The patients were separated into Group 1, comprising 434 patients with normal coronary arteries and non-obstructive CAD, and Group 2, including 106 with obstructive CAD. In Group 2, the patients were separated into SYNTAX ≤ 22 or ≥23. Glucose, low-density lipoprotein, white blood cells, and MHR were determined to be significantly higher in Group 2 (

Abstract Barrett’s esophagus (BE) is a disease entity that is a sequela of chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease that may result in esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) due to columnar epithelial dysplasia. The histological degree of dysplasia is the sole biomarker frequently utilized by clinicians. However, the cost of endoscopy and the fact that the degree of dysplasia does not progress in many patients with BE diminish the effectiveness of histological grading as a perfect biomarker. Multiple or more quantitative biomarkers are required by clinicians since early diagnosis is crucial in esophageal adenocancers, which have a high mortality rate. The presence of epigenetic factors in the early stages of this neoplastic transformation holds promise as a predictive biomarker. In this review, current studies on DNA methylations, histone modifications, and noncoding RNAs (miRNAs) that have been discovered during the progression from BE dysplasia to EAC were collated.

Abstract: ... responsible for early complications. Glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) is an enzyme involved ...

Abstract Introduction: Complications in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) cause serious morbidity and mortality. Predicting patients at risk in advance and changing the symptomatic care and/or preparation regimen according to this risk assessment have been emphasized recently. Several single-nucleotide polymorphisms have been studied, and some were found to be responsible for early complications. Glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) is an enzyme involved in the detoxification process that reduces oxidative stress by reducing the number of free oxygen radicals.
Aim: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between GSTP1 polymorphism and early complications of allo-HSCT, iron parameters, overall survival (OS), and transplantation-related mortality (TRM).
Materials and methods: A total of 50 patients diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (n = 23) or acute lymphoblastic leukemia (n = 27) who underwent allo-HSCT between May 2008 and February 2011 at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine, Stem Cell Transplantation Unit, were included.
Results: Of the 50 patients, 24 (48%) were women and 26 (52%) were men. The median age of the patients was 26 (16-74) years. GSTP1 polymorphism was detected in 23 (46%) patients, and 27 (54%) had no polymorphism (wild type). The two groups were compared in terms of early toxicity after transplantation, according to the preparation regimen. The group with GSTP1 polymorphism was found to have a high transferrin saturation index (P < 0.05). Patients with no GSTP1 polymorphism showed a high grade III-IV anemia ratio (P < 0.05). The presence of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome and graft-versus-host disease was similar in both groups (P > 0.05). OS and TRM were higher in the GSTP1 polymorphism group, but no statistical difference was found between the two groups (P > 0.05).
Conclusions: TSI was higher in the GSTP1 polymorphism group. GSTP1 polymorphism had no effect on early transplantation complications. Although the OS and TRM ratios were higher in the GSTP1 polymorphism group, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups. Further studies with larger sample size are needed.

Abstract The aim of this study was to determine health sciences students' levels of knowledge about HPV infection and the vaccine and their health beliefs, to compare them in terms of individual characteristics, and to examine the relationship between their knowledge of the HPV infection/vaccine and their health beliefs. The data of the study were collected from Health Sciences Faculty students through a face-to-face setting (n: 824). The data tools used in the study were the identification form, the health belief model scale for human papillomavirus infection and vaccination, and the human papillomavirus knowledge scale. The results showed that (1) although the students' levels of knowledge about HPV infection and the vaccine were low, (2) they did perceive HPV infection to be a severe problem. According to the multilinear regression analysis performed, the main predictor of the perceived severity (β = 0.29; 95% Cl: 0.04, 0.07), obstacle (β = 0.21; 95% Cl: 0.01, 0.04), and sensitivity (β = 0.22; 95% Cl: 0.02, 0.06) subscales of the HBMS-HPVV was general HPV knowledge. It was also determined that as the students' knowledge about HPV increased, their health belief levels regarding HPV infection and the vaccine increased as well (n: 824). In conclusion, for nurses and other healthcare professionals to be effective in informing individuals, they should have knowledge of HPV infection and the vaccine. In this context, the necessary education and advice about the importance of HPV infection and the vaccine should be provided to students receiving education in the field of healthcare.

Abstract A tsunami warning system providing services in the Eastern Mediterranean, Aegean, Marmara and Black Seas under the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)—Intergovernmental Coordination Group (ICG) for the Tsunami Early Warning and Mitigation System in the North-Eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean and Connected Seas (NEAMTWS) framework was established in Turkey by the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) (Özel et al., 2011). KOERI’s Regional Earthquake and Tsunami Monitoring Center (RETMC) was established on the foundations of the legacy KOERI National Earthquake Monitoring Center (NEMC) by adding observation, analysis and operational capability related to tsunami early warnings after an extensive preparatory period during 2009 and 2011. The center initiated its test-mode 7/24 operational status as a national tsunami warning center in 2011, and after a one year period it became operational as a candidate tsunami warning center for NEAMTWS on 1 July 2012, together with CENALT (Centre d’Alerte aux Tsunamis—France) and followed by the NOA (National Observatory of Athens—Greece) on 28 August 2012, INGV (Instituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia—Italy) on 1 October 2014 and IPMA (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera—Portugal) on 1 February 2018, completing full coverage of the tsunami-prone regions monitored by NEAMTWS. In this paper, an overview of the progress and continuous improvement of KOERI’s tsunami early warning system will be presented, together with lessons learned from important tsunamigenic events, such as the 20 July 2017 Bodrum–Kos Mw 6.6 and 30 October 2020 Samos–Izmir Mw 6.9 earthquakes. Gaps preventing the completion of an effective tsunami warning cycle and areas for future improvement are also addressed.

Abstract Behçet’s disease (BD) is a systemic and inflammatory disorder that is mainly present along the ancient Silk Road, from the Mediterranean Sea to East Asia. A wide range of prevalence figures (0.1–420/100,000) have been reported for BD, also among Turkish populations of similar genetic background living in different countries. Recently, a decline in the incidence of BD and a change of the disease spectrum to less-severe manifestations have been reported from Japan and Korea, two genetically homogenous, affluent populations with limited immigration. It was hypothesized that a decline in infectious diseases, especially dental/periodontal infections, associated with the improvement in oral health, could be a part of these changes in the disease expression. Further epidemiological studies in other populations might demonstrate whether there is a worldwide similar trend and may provide a better understanding of the triggering factors for the onset and course of BD.

Abstract Even though drivers with Parkinson’s disease (PD) are considered at higher for accidents due to associated visual, cognitive impairments as well as sleeping and movement disorders, no epidemiologic relationship between PD and accidents has been established. However, drivers with PD have been found to cease driving earlier than healthy controls of similar age. The medical diagnosis or the physician’s evaluation alone is not enough to decide driving fitness in drivers with PD. Evaluation of movement, cognitive and visual skills and traffic and driving simulation tests help to assess driving performance, however there are no well-established and standardized methods and guidelines to determine driver fitness in PD in Turkey or worldwide. Components of driving skills and evaluation of driving performance in PD along with the description of the status of driving research and assessments in Turkey and proposals to advance driving assessment in Turkey will be discussed in our manuscript. Developing a standardized evaluation methods and a multidisciplinary decision process for the patients with a neurodegenerative disease is very important to maintain their safe vehicular mobility for a long time.
