    Abstract Multi-particle cumulants and corresponding Fourier harmonics are measured for azimuthal angle distributions of charged particles in [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text] = 5.02 and 13 TeV and in [Formula: see text] + Pb collisions at [Formula: see text] = 5.02 TeV, and compared to the results obtained for low-multiplicity [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text] = 2.76 TeV. These measurements aim to assess the collective nature of particle production. The measurements of multi-particle cumulants confirm the evidence for collective phenomena in [Formula: see text] + Pb and low-multiplicity [Formula: see text] collisions. On the other hand, the [Formula: see text] results for four-particle cumulants do not demonstrate collective behaviour, indicating that they may be biased by contributions from non-flow correlations. A comparison of multi-particle cumulants and derived Fourier harmonics across different collision systems is presented as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity. For a given multiplicity, the measured Fourier harmonics are largest in [Formula: see text], smaller in [Formula: see text] + Pb and smallest in [Formula: see text] collisions. The [Formula: see text] results show no dependence on the collision energy, nor on the multiplicity.

    Abstract ExsA is a transcriptional activator of the Pseudomonas aeruginosa type III secretion system (T3SS) and a member of the AraC/XylS protein family. Each of the 10 ExsA-dependent promoter regions that define the T3SS regulon has two adjacent binding sites for monomeric ExsA. Whereas the promoter-proximal sites (binding site 1) contain highly conserved GnC and TGnnA sequences that are separated by ∼10 bp, the promoter-distal sites (binding site 2) share no obvious sequence similarity to each other or to the binding site 1 consensus. In the present study, we used footprinting with Fe-BABE (a protein-labeling reagent that can be conjugated to cysteine residues) to demonstrate that the two ExsA monomers bind to the P(exsC), P(exsD), P(exoT), and P(pcrG) promoters in a head-to-tail orientation. The footprinting data further indicate that the conserved GnC and TGnnA sequences constitute binding site 1. When bound to site 1, the first helix-turn-helix (HTH) motif of ExsA interacts with the conserved GnC sequence, and the second HTH interacts at or near the TGnnA sequences. Genetic data using the P(exoT) promoter indicate that residues L198 and T199 in the first HTH motif of ExsA contact the guanine in the GnC sequence and that residue K202, also in the first HTH motif, contacts the cytosine. Likewise, evidence is presented that residues Q248, Y250, T252, and R257 located in the second HTH motif contribute to the recognition of the TGnnA sequence. These combined data define interactions of ExsA with site 1 on the P(exoT) promoter and provide insight into the nature of the interactions involved in recognition of binding site 2.

    Abstract A wide variety of P-stereogenic aryldialkylphosphines were prepared in enantioenriched form by a systematic diversification of the (-)-sparteine-mediated dynamic kinetic resolution of racemic lithiophosphine-boranes reported by Livinghouse. Excellent asymmetric induction was observed provided that the intermediate lithiophosphine/sparteine complex precipitated from solution; more soluble derivatives returned poor ee's or racemic material. The resulting phosphine-boranes were deprotected and used as reagents in the desymmetrizing asymmetric aza-Wittig reaction of 2-alkyl-2-(3-azidopropyl)cyclohexane-1,3-diones, delivering the highest ee's yet observed in this process (up to 84% ee). Phosphines bearing bulky substituents required heating for the aza-Wittig reaction to proceed to completion, which 31P NMR studies showed to be due to interception of the reaction by the formation of unreactive (E)-phosphazides. This was circumvented by use of methyltrioxorhenium to catalyze the formation of iminophosphoranes from the azide and phosphine, allowing reactions to take place at ambient temperature, although the ee's of the asymmetric reactions were reduced in these examples.

    Abstract The Hubble Space Telescope observed the fragmented comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 (1993e) (P indicates that it is a periodic comet) on 1 July 1993. Approximately 20 individual nuclei and their comae were observed in images taken with the Planetary Camera. After subtraction of the comae light, the 11 brightest nuclei have magnitudes between approximately 23.7 and 24.8. Assuming that the geometric albedo is 0.04, these magnitudes imply that the nuclear diameters are in the range approximately 2.5 to 4.3 kilometers. If the density of each nucleus is 1 gram per cubic centimeter, the total energy deposited by the impact of these 11 nuclei into Jupiter's atmosphere next July will be approximately 4 x 10(30) ergs ( approximately 10(8) megatons of TNT). This latter number should be regarded as an upper limit because the nuclear magnitudes probably contain a small residual coma contribution. The Faint Object Spectrograph was used to search for fluorescence from OH, which is usually an excellent indicator of cometary activity. No OH emission was detected, and this can be translated into an upper limit on the water production rate of approximately 2 x 10(27) molecules per second.

    Abstract The specific binding of [3H]neurotensin, [3H]substance P, [3H]D-Ala2-D-Leu5-enkephalin (delta receptors) and [3H]-Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-(NMe)Phe-Gly-ol (mu receptors) were studied in membrane preparations of caudate nucleus, putamen, globus pallidus and substantia nigra from patients with Parkinson's disease and from age-matched controls. The density of neurotensin receptors was decreased in globus pallidus (lateral and medial segments) in parkinsonian brain. Substance P receptors were reduced in the putamen (anterior and posterior) and in lateral globus pallidus in Parkinson's disease. There was a reduction in the density of opioid receptors in posterior putamen and in mu receptors in caudate nucleus and putamen (anterior and posterior). No differences in neuropeptide receptor binding were observed in substantia nigra from parkinsonian brains compared with control subjects. The reductions in neuropeptide receptor density were less marked than the decrease in caudate and putamen content of dopamine and its metabolites. This suggests that neuropeptide receptors are only partially localized to striatal dopamine terminals.

    Abstract p,p'-DDT-induced myoclonus in mice has been proposed as a model of stimulus-sensitive action myoclonus responsive to L-5-HTP and clonazepam treatment. However, we have been unable to confirm the ability of clonazepam to reduce myoclonus induced by p,p'-DDT in the rat. A detailed pharmacological, biochemical, and physiological investigation in the latter species shows p,p'-DDT-induced myoclonus not to resemble stimulus-sensitive action myoclonus occurring in humans. Precursors of 5-HT (L-tryptophan and L-5-HTP) reduced the intensity of myoclonus, but the 5-HT agonists quipazine and Org 6582 did not. 5-HT antagonists (methergoline, methysergide, and cinanserin) did not potentiate myoclonus induced by p,p'-DDT. In contrast, administration of MAOIs (pargyline, nialamide, and tranylcypromine) markedly attenuated the myoclonus. No observable changes in cerebral 5-HT biochemical parameters occurred at the onset of myoclonus, although brain tryptophan and 5-HIAA were increased following periods of prolonged myoclonus. Electrophysiological analysis of p,p'-DDT-induced myoclonus in the rat revealed changes in EEG and EMG activity that were different from those observed in human reticular reflex myoclonus. In conclusion, in contrast to the mouse, myoclonus induced by p,p'-DDT in the rat does not appear to be a suitable model of 5-HT-sensitive action myoclonus in man.

    Abstract Met-enkephalin (Met-enk) and substance P (SP) were measured by a combined high-performance liquid chromatography/radioimmunoanalysis method in medial (GPM) and lateral globus pallidus (GPL) from controls and from Parkinson's disease (PD) patients. All patients showed a similar marked (> 90%) reduction in dopamine (DA) levels in putamen compared with controls. However, based on DA levels in the caudate nucleus, two subgroups of PD patients were differentiated. In patients with > 80% decrease in caudate nucleus DA content, there was a three-fold increase in both Met-enk and SP levels in GPM. In contrast, in patients showing an approximately 50% reduction in DA content in caudate, levels of both peptides were markedly reduced (approximately 80%). Met-enk and SP levels in GPL were unchanged in PD. These results suggest that neurons containing Met-enk and SP projecting to GPM adapt according to the extent of degeneration in the substantia nigra in PD.

    Abstract Administration of p,p'-DDT to rats produced myoclonus, but unlike previous studies in mice, this was not decreased by administration of clonazepam. Precursors of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) (L-tryptophan and L-5-HTP) reduced the intensity of myoclonus, but the 5-HT agonists, quipazine and Org 6582 did not. Antagonists of 5-HT (methergoline, methysergide and cinanserin) did not potentiate the myoclonus induced by p,p'-DDT. Drugs altering the function of dopamine and noradrenaline (apomorphine, clonidine or phenoxybenzamine) also had no effect on this myoclonus. Administration of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs; pargyline, nialamide and tranylcypromine) markedly attenuated the myoclonus, an effect that could not be attributed to an action on any one monoamine system. No observable changes in cerebral biochemical parameters of 5-HT occurred at the onset of myoclonus, although tryptophan and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in brain were increased following periods of prolonged myoclonus. Electrophysiological analysis of the myoclonus in the rat induced by p,p'-DDT revealed changes in EEG and EMG activity which suggested an origin for the myoclonus in the brainstem. Although this was similar to electrophysiological findings in some human patients with post-anoxic action myoclonus, the pharmacological studies suggest that the myoclonus induced by p,p'-DDT in the rat is not a suitable model for screening potential drugs to be used in the treatment of this disorder.
