    Abstract Distribution, size, mineral, and chemical compositions of ferromanganese micronodules (FMMNs) and chemical composition of host sediments were examined in a series of red clay samples with ages from Eocene to the present at Ocean Drilling Program Leg 199, Site 1216, south of the Molokai Fracture Zone in the Central Pacific Basin.
    The number of FMMNs changed drastically throughout the 40-m-long red clay intervals. FMMNs are abundant in the upper 9 m of core, decrease between 9 and 25 meters below seafloor (mbsf) with depth, and are very rare from 30 to 40 mbsf. Chemical composition of FMMNs showed high Mn/Fe ratios and Ni and Cu contents and a distinct positive Ce anomaly because of the existence of buserite. This suggests that FMMNs in the red clay from 25 mbsf to the top of the cored interval were deposited continuously in an oxic diagenetic bottom environment. The red clay below 30 mbsf with higher Mn contents contains few FMMNs but abundant tiny Mn particles within brown silicates coated by Fe (oxy-hydro)oxides. This indicates that the mode of manganese deposition changed between 25 and 30 mbsf.

    Abstract Probable in-situ manganese deposits larger than 1 cm in diameter buried in ODP/DSDP cores were selected for study after examining previous descriptions of the manganese deposits in site reports and the ODP data base. Most of the selected samples from 11 cores occur at or just above sedimentary hiatuses or in slowly deposited sediments and are overlain by rapidly deposited sediments of biogenic, terrigenous or volcanogenic origin. The changes in sedimentation recorded in the lithostratigraphic sections around these deposits are closely related to changes in tectonic evolution, deep water circulation or biological productivity at the sites.
    The similarity in composition and structure of the buried deposits to those of the modern manganese nodules and crusts with no evidence of post-depositional change suggest that buried manganese deposits may be used as indicators of past sedimentary conditions during which they formed. Their major components are hydrogenetic and earlydiagenetic manganese minerals as well as detrital minerals. The characteristics of these manganese deposits suggests that similar processes of deposition have taken place since the Paleogene or older.

    Abstract Many materials used for membrane separations are composed of nanoscale structures such as pores and domains. Such nanostructures often control the solute permeability and selectivity of the separation membranes. Thus, for future development of highly efficient separation membranes, it is important to understand the structural and chemical properties of these nanostructures and also their influences on solute transport dynamics. For the last two decades, single-molecule fluorescence techniques have been used to measure the detailed dynamics of solute molecules diffusing in various nanostructured materials, giving valuable insights into molecular transport mechanisms influenced by nanoscale material heterogeneity. This Perspective discusses recent single-molecule fluorescence studies on solute diffusion in materials relevant to membrane separations, including dense polymer films and nanoporous materials. These studies have revealed the formation and properties of nanostructures and unique transport dynamics of solute molecules manipulated by their confinement and partitioning to the nanostructures, which play key roles in membrane separations. This Perspective will also point out scientific challenges toward a thorough understanding of molecular-level mechanisms in membrane separations.

    Abstract Strontium isotopic compositions of acetic acid (HOAc) leachate fractions of eight manganese oxide deposits from the modern seafloor, and of twenty-one buried manganese nodules from Cretaceous to Recent sediments in DSDP/ODP cores were measured. ratios of HOAc leachates in all modern seafloor manganese oxides of various origins are identical with present seawater. The ratios of the HOAc leachates of buried nodules from DSDP/ODP cores are significantly lower than those of nodules from the modern seafloor and are mostly identical with coeval seawater values estimated from the age of associated sediments. It is suggested that the buried nodules in DSDP/ODP cores are not artifacts transported from the present seafloor during the drilling process, but are in situ fossil deposits from the past deep-sea floor during Cretaceous to Quaternary periods. The formation of deep-sea fossil nodules prior to the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) indicates that the circulation of oxygenated deep seawaters have activately deposited manganese oxides since the Eocene Epoch, or earlier.

    Abstract Antioxidative polyphenols represented by tannins and flavonoids are rich in numerous food sources and traditional natural medicines and currently attracting increased attention in health care and food industries because of their multiple biological activities that are favorable to human health. Commemorating the outstanding achievements on tannins by Dr. Takuo Okuda on the occasion of his passing away in December 2016, his colleagues, friends, and worldwide experts of polyphenol research have contributed 18 papers on their recent study to the Special Issue of Molecules. This book is its reprinted form. This covers reviews of structural features, historical usages, and biological activities of unique class of ellagitannins and condensed tannins, and original articles on the most up-to-date findings on the anticancer effect of green tea catechins, the antivirus effect of tannins comparing with the clinically used drugs, the analytical method of ellagitannins using quantitative NMR, the chemical structures of Hydrangea-blue complex (pigment) and condensed tannins in Ephedra sinica and purple prairie clover, and the relationship of condensed tannins in legumes and grape-marc with methane production in the in vitro ruminant system, and others.     Abstract Background/aims: Information regarding the use of wearable devices in clinical research, including disease areas, intervention techniques, trends in device types, and sample size targets, remains elusive. Therefore, we conducted a comprehensive review of clinical research trends related to wristband wearable devices in research planning and examined their applications in clinical investigations.
    Methods: As this study identified trends in the adoption of wearable devices during the planning phase of clinical research, including specific disease areas and targeted number of intervention cases, we searched ClinicalTrials.gov-a prominent platform for registering and disseminating clinical research. Since wrist-worn devices represent a large share of the market, we focused on wrist-worn devices and selected the most representative models among them. The main analysis focused on major wearable devices to facilitate data analysis and interpretation, but other wearables were also surveyed for reference. We searched ClinicalTrials.gov with the keywords "ActiGraph,""Apple Watch,""Empatica,""Fitbit,""Garmin," and "wearable devices" to obtain studies published up to 21 August 2022. This initial search yielded 3214 studies. After excluding duplicate National Clinical Trial studies (the overlap was permissible among different device types except for wearable devices), our analysis focused on 2930 studies, including simple, time-series, and type-specific assessments of various variables.
    Results: Overall, an increasing number of clinical studies have incorporated wearable devices since 2012. While ActiGraph and Fitbit initially dominated this landscape, the use of other devices has steadily increased, constituting approximately 10% of the total after 2015. Observational studies outnumbered intervention studies, with behavioral and device-based interventions being particularly prevalent. Regarding disease types, cancer and cardiovascular diseases accounted for approximately 20% of the total. Notably, 114 studies adopted multiple devices simultaneously within the context of their clinical investigations.
    Conclusions: Our findings revealed that the utilization of wearable devices for data collection and behavioral interventions in various disease areas has been increasing over time since 2012. The increase in the number of studies over the past 3 years has been particularly significant, suggesting that this trend will continue to accelerate in the future. Devices and their evaluation methods that have undergone thorough validation, confirmed their accuracy, and adhered to established legal regulations will likely assume a pivotal role in evaluations, allowing for remote clinical trials. Moreover, behavioral intervention therapy utilizing apps is becoming more extensive, and we expect to see more examples that will lead to their approval as programmed medical devices in the future.

    Abstract The lungs serve as the primary organ for respiration, facilitating the vital exchange of gases with the bloodstream. Given their perpetual exposure to external particulates and pathogens, they possess intricate protective barriers. Cellular adhesion in the lungs is robustly maintained through tight junctions, adherens junctions, and desmosomes. Furthermore, the pulmonary system features a mucociliary clearance mechanism that synthesizes mucus and transports it to the outside. This mucus is enriched with chemical barriers like antimicrobial proteins and immunoglobulin A (IgA). Additionally, a complex immunological network comprising epithelial cells, neural cells, and immune cells plays a pivotal role in pulmonary defense. A comprehensive understanding of these protective systems offers valuable insights into potential pathologies and their therapeutic interventions.
