Abstract Phosphorus exerts a good stabilization effect on soil lead. In this study, the findings of 90 papers were summarized using the Meta-analysis method. These papers described the immobilization of soil lead using phosphorus from 1997 to 2022. The effects of phosphorus materials on the stabilization rate and speciation transformation of soil Pb and soil pH were quantitatively analyzed based on soil properties, stabilization process conditions, and types of phosphorus materials. The results revealed that the stronger the soil alkalinity (pH ≥ 7.5), the lower is the content of lead (≤ 500 mg·kg

Abstract Microplastics, as an emerging pollutant, have garnered global attention. Urban areas are key hotspots for the generation of microplastic pollution, whereas urban water bodies act as vital conduits for the dissemination of microplastics to other freshwater environments. In this study, the Dongshan Canal in the urban area of Yichang City was selected as the research subject. Through field sampling, microscopic observation, and Fourier infrared spectroscopy analysis conducted in July and October 2022, the occurrence characteristics and potential pollution sources of microplastics in the water body of the Dongshan Canal were identified and analyzed. The ecological risk and annual emission volume of microplastics in the water body were quantitatively assessed using the risk index (H), pollution load index (PLI) model, and proportional flow method. The results indicated that the average abundances of microplastics in the surface water of the Dongshan Canal were (7 295±1 051) n·m

Abstract The sea cucumber Holothuria leucospilota, a nutritive and commercial marine species, has a high protein and low lipid content. To date, the mechanisms underlying gender determination and differentiation in sea cucumbers remain unclear. Identifying gender-specific molecular markers is an effective method of revealing the genetic basis of gender determination and differentiation. The inability to distinguish between male and female individuals causes reproductive efficiency to decline in aquaculture. In this study, we used the gonads of the sea cucumber H. leucospilota as samples to conduct the experiment. The differentially abundant metabolites (DAMs) detected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry were enriched in pathways associated with prolactin metabolism, insulin metabolism, hypoxia-inducible factor-1 signaling, and calcium signaling. At the transcriptome level, Illumina sequencing was performed on H. leucospilota, demonstrating that gender-specific expression genes were enriched in the retinoic acid-inducible gene I-like receptor signaling pathway, C-type lectin receptor signaling pathway, alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, and ether lipid metabolism by the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis. By analyzing the common pathways between DAMs and differentially expressed genes, we found that gender-related genes of H. leucospilota were mostly enriched in the necroptosis pathway and the cysteine and methionine metabolism pathways. According to the common pathways, uch-sc1 and uch-sc2 are male-specific expression genes, and uch-sc3 and bhmt are female-specific expression genes at the mRNA level. These results provide information on gender differences in H. leucospilota.

Abstract Objective: Acute cerebral infarction (ACI) is susceptible to cause disability or death of people. Astaxanthin (ATX) possesses the protective effect of organ injury. Therefore, the study was to explore the potential mechanism of protective effect with ATX on ACI.
Methods: 30 SD rats were divided into Sham, ACI, and ATX groups. The rats in the ATX group were pretreated with ATX by gavage for three days before surgery, while the rats in the other two groups were pretreated with saline. The model of ACI was established by thread embolization. 24 h after the operation, the neurological function was scored, and cerebral infarct area and pathological morphology of brains were measured; the edema of the brain was detected by dry/wet method; Western blot was applied to measure the translocation of Nrf-2 and the protein expression of HO-1, Bax and BCL-2; Brain cell apoptosis was assessed through TUNEL; ELISA was used to detect the oxidative stress factors of catalase (CAT) superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and malondialdehyde (MDA), and the inflammatory factors of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6.
Result: Compared with the ACI group, ATX pretreatment can significantly improve neurological function; reduce the edema index of the brain, cerebral infarct area, cerebral pathological damage and apoptosis of brain cells. Moreover, ATX also can increase the protein expression of nuclear Nrf-2, HO-1, BCL-2, CAT, SOD, and GPX by decreasing the content of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, MDA, Bax and cytosolic Nrf-2.
Conclusion: ATX might have a protective effect of acute cerebral infarction, and the mechanism is probably associated with suppressing oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis by activating Nrf-2/HO-1signalling.

Abstract Background: While most complications of cervical surgery are reversible, some, such as symptomatic postoperative spinal epidural hematoma (SEH), which generally occurs within 24 h, are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Delayed neurological dysfunction is diagnosed in cases when symptoms present > 3 d postoperatively. Owing to its rarity, the risk factors for delayed neurological dysfunction are unclear. Consequently, this condition can result in irreversible neurological deficits and serious consequences. In this paper, we present a case of postoperative SEH that developed three days after hematoma evacuation.
Case summary: A 68-year-old man with an American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) grade C injury was admitted to our hospital with neck pain and tetraplegia following a fall. The C3-C7 posterior laminectomy and the lateral mass screw fixation surgery were performed on the tenth day. Postoperatively, the patient showed no changes in muscle strength or ASIA grade. The patient experienced neck pain and subcutaneous swelling on the third day postoperatively, his muscle strength decreased, and his ASIA score was grade A. Magnetic resonance imaging showed hypointense signals on T1 weighted image (T1WI) and T2WI located behind the epidural space, with spinal cord compression. Emergency surgical intervention for the hematoma was performed 12 h after onset. Although hypoproteinemia and pleural effusion did not improve in the perioperative period, the patient recovered to ASIA grade C on day 30 after surgery, and was transferred to a functional rehabilitation exercise unit.
Conclusion: This case shows that amelioration of low blood albumin and pleural effusion is an important aspect of the perioperative management of cervical surgery. Surgery to relieve the pressure on the spinal cord should be performed as soon as possible to decrease neurological disabilities.

Abstract A new strategy for the wastewater treatment was proposed by combining polyvinylpyrrolidone-functionalized silver nanoparticles with reduced graphene oxide (AgNPs-PVP@rGO) as a visible light-triggered photoactive nanocomposite. The nanocomposite with enhanced photocatalytic degradation and photothermal antibacterial activity can simultaneously decrease the content of organic pollutants and bacteria in the wastewater under visible light irradiation. The efficiency of photocatalytic degradation can be significantly improved by the conjugation of AgNPs onto the rGO surface. The water solubility and dispersion of nanocomposite can be increased via PVP functionalization, without stirring during the photocatalytic process. Under the optimal synthesis condition, AgNPs-PVP@rGO has a photocatalytic degradation efficiency of 90.1% for rhodamine B, which is 6.9 and 1.8 times higher than that of polyvinylpyrrolidone-functionalized silver nanoparticles and rGO alone, respectively. More importantly, the degradation efficiency of optimal AgNPs-PVP@rGO sol on rhodamine B is significantly higher than that of its block suspension in the same amount, indicating that the sol with more specific surface area is conducive to the photocatalytic reaction. Meanwhile, the AgNPs-PVP@rGO with excellent photothermal activity can effectively inhibit the bacterial growth. This functional modification of graphene provides a new strategy for simultaneous treatment of multiple pollutants in wastewater. The AgNPs-PVP@rGO nanocomposites for simultaneous enhanced photocatalytic degradation and photothermal antibacterial activity by visible light.
