    Abstract Phenolic compound even at low concentrations, are considered to be priority pollutants due to their significant toxicity. Electrospinning was used to create a polyacrylonitril (PAN) nanofiber, which was then impregnated with graphene oxide (GO). After a preliminary investigation into the electrospinning parameters (e.g., using various voltages and polymer concentrations), the electrospun nanofibres were tuned, this study evaluated the effectiveness of these materials in removing phenolic compounds from wastewater through adsorption. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) were used to analyze the synthesized nanofiber mats. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that the structure of nanofiber mats was altered by the addition of graphene oxide (GO) in different ratios. Specifically, the surface of the fibres exhibited increased roughness, and the diameter of the fibres also experienced an increase. The average diameter of the fibres was measured to be (134.9 ± 21.43 nm) for the PAN/2.5% GO composite and (198 ± 33.94 nm) for the PAN/5% GO composite. FTIR spectra of the PAN/GO nanocomposites nanofiber displayed distinct peaks associated with graphene oxide (GO). These included a wide peak at 3400 cm

    Abstract Abstract Background Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee joint is a common cause of chronic disability in older adults. During the past 10 years, the infrapatellar fat pad (IPFP) has emerged as a new player in the pathogenesis of knee OA. Its exact role in the pathogenesis of knee OA remains uncertain. While many studies focused on the detrimental effect of the chemical mediators released by IPFP and their role in the accentuation of the development of OA, only few studies elucidated the beneficial effect of IPFP maximal area as a local shock absorber protecting the adjacent articular structures from progressive damage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relation between the IPFP maximal area and the prevalence of OA manifestations. We also studied the relation between the subcutaneous (SC) fat thicknesses on the medial aspect of the knee as a surrogate marker of body obesity and the IPFP area. Results A total of 216 knee scans for 188 adult patients (64 males and 124 females) who met the inclusion criteria were examined. They were between 45 and 66 years (mean 52.5 years). The mean IPFP area for all patients was 6.9 cm2 (± 1.6 SD) (ranged from 4.5 to 11 cm2). After adjustment for potential confounders, there was a significant negative association between IPFP area and radiographic manifestations of OA (osteophites, joint space narrowing, and grade of OA) (P value < 0.001 for each), as well as MRI manifestations of OA (cartilage defects and subchondral bone marrow lesions) (P value < 0.001 and < 0.003, respectively). There was a negative but non-significant association between IPFP area and SC fat thickness. Conclusion In our study, we found supportive evidence that IPFP maximal area is associated with fewer osteoarthritic knee changes and less cartilage damage, suggesting that it plays a protective role against the development and progression of OA.     Abstract Abstract Background Apparently, asymptomatic intracranial anomalies of potential clinical significance are becoming problematic, especially with the increase of use of brain MRI by clinicians and researchers. Performing MRI at higher resolution and stronger magnetic field and with more selective sequences has led to the detection of subtle brain anomalies that were not detected previously. Incidental findings are defined as previously undetected anomalies of potential clinical relevance that are unexpectedly detected and not related to the indication of the scan. Knowing about their existence would help clinicians to inform their patients of the potential risks and plan for long-term follow-up when indicated. Results Seven hundred fifty-three neurologically healthy subjects (389 males and 364 females) who underwent MRI scanning of the brain were screened for the presence of incidental findings, and the prevalence of each finding was recorded. Incidental findings were recorded in 11.7% of the subjects with meningiomas being the most commonly encountered finding (2.5%) followed by vascular malformations (aneurysms, cavernomas) in about 2% of the subjects. Meningiomas, cavernomas, and aneurysms had significantly higher prevalence in females than in males. The prevalence of neoplastic incidental findings increased with age, while the detection of non-neoplastic findings seemed to decrease with age. Conclusion Incidental findings were relatively common in the adult Egyptian population. The most common findings were meningiomas, followed by vascular malformations and arachnoids cysts. Knowing about their existence will help directing patients towards the proper specialist and plan for appropriate follow-up to avoid potential clinical hazards. It also raises the awareness of the importance of screening the brain scans while scanning the patient for other purposes like scanning the paranasal sinuses, orbits, and petrous temporal bones.

    Abstract Abstract Background There is obvious interest in finding a non-invasive diagnostic tool to detect the development of hepatic fibrosis and distinguish between its various stages. Chronic inflammation of the liver secondary to viral hepatitis, autoimmune conditions, sclerosing cholangitis, drug toxicity, chronic alcohol intake, different metabolic disorders, and steatosis lead to fibrosis and maybe cirrhosis. The current study aimed to assess the usefulness of diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) in diagnosis of post hepatitis C fibrosis and detection of its stage. Results A prospective study had included 232 participants; 120 patients had chronic hepatitis C with/without HCC and 112 subjects had normal liver. There was no significant difference between the two groups regarding age or gender (p 0.192 and 0.227 respectively). DW-MRI was performed using 1.5 T machine. The mean liver ADC values and normalized liver ADC (liver ADC/spleen ADC) were measured at b value 800 s/mm2; both were significantly lower among cases than controls. Cutoff values of liver ADC were 1.531 × 10−3 mm2/s, 1.409 × 10−3 mm2/s, 1.192 × 10−3 mm2/s, and 1.093 × 10−3 mm2/s for METAVIR stages ≥ F1, ≥ F2, ≥ F3, and F4, respectively. Normalized liver ADC showed larger area under the curve (AUC) than mean liver ADC in all differentiation categories except for differentiating between F0 and all other fibrosis stages. Conclusion In line with the literature, DW-MR imaging using b value of 800 s/mm2 has proved to be a valuable diagnostic technique for detection and staging of post hepatitis C fibrosis/cirrhosis being noninvasive procedure with acceptable accuracy. DWI using liver/spleen ADC values raised the diagnostic performance with AUC more than 90% in all fibrosis stages on METAVIR score.

    Abstract Purpose: The aim of this study was to introduce a revised tissue-saving technique for combined topography-guided photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and cross-linking for keratoconus (KC) treatment and to evaluate its efficacy, safety, and stability.
    Methods: This retrospective, noncontrolled study was performed at Maadi Eye Subspecialty Center and Eye Care Center, Cairo, Egypt. The technique was performed on virgin keratoconic corneas with 3 different morphological patterns of ectasia. It involves performing topography-guided PRK before epithelial removal, followed by customized phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) that is tailored to each cornea after studying the treatment profile on the laser treatment screen. The electronic medical records were explored for preoperative and postoperative data, including subjective refraction and topographic data (using Sirius topographer).
    Results: The study was conducted on 123 eyes of 93 patients with a mean age of 27.98 years ±6.06. The follow-up ranged from 6 to 36 months (mean ± SD of 16.2 months ±10.4). The results showed statistically nonsignificant differences among the 3 ectasia subgroups in treatment spherical equivalent, treatment maximum depth, thickness of removed epithelium, and thinnest residual stromal bed. There were statistically significant differences in almost all values between the preoperative and postoperative data, with significant postoperative patients' improvement ( P value <0.001). The subgroups' results were almost the same as the whole cohort's results. The safety and efficacy indices of the performed procedure showed remarkably high values (1.48 ± 0.21 and 0.87 ± 0.40, respectively).
    Conclusions: This revised protocol for KC management maximally preserves stromal tissue with proven efficacy, safety, and stability.

    Abstract Abstract Background Brain atrophy measurement is now a cornerstone in basic neuro-imaging science. While assessment of white matter atrophy by visual inspection is subjective, volumetric approaches are time-consuming and not often feasible. Bi-caudate ratio represents a linear surrogate parameter of brain volume that can be derived from standard imaging sequences. This study highlights the value of the bi-caudate ratio (BCR) as a MRI marker of white matter atrophy in patients with multiple sclerosis and ischemic leukoencephalopathy and set a cut-off value to differentiate between patients with white matter atrophy and normal subjects. Results A total of 115 patients (54 males and 61 females) diagnosed with white matter leukoencephalopathy (MS in 51 patients and ischemic leukoencephalopathy in 64 patients) were included. Another group of 60 subjects with a normal white matter signal was recruited as a control group. BCR for the patient group ranged from 0.13 to 0.27 (mean (± SD) = 0.16 ± 0.02), while for the control group, it ranged from 0.05 mm to 0.13 (mean (± SD) = 0.09 ± 0.01). The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P value < 0.001). A cut-off value of 0.13 was used to differentiate between the BCR in both patients and control groups with sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 99.2%, 100%, and 99%, respectively. The difference in BCR for patients diagnosed with MS and ischemic leukoencephalopathy was also statistically significant (P value < 0.001). Conclusion The bi-caudate ratio represents a linear measurement of subcortical atrophy that can be useful as a surrogate marker of global supra-tentorial white matter atrophy instead of the usually performed visual and therefore subjective assessment. It is an easily obtained measure that can be performed without complex time-consuming volumetric studies. Our findings also revealed that the BCR is higher in patients with ischemic leukoencephalopathy than in patients with MS.

    Abstract Electrospinning nanofibers have a tremendous interest in biomedical applications such as tissue engineering, drug administration, and wound healing because of their ability to replicate and restore the function of the natural extracellular matrix found in tissues. The study's highlight is the electrospinning preparation and characterization of polyacrylonitrile with chicken feather keratin as an additive. In this study, keratin was extracted from chicken feather waste using an environmentally friendly method and used to reinforce polymeric nanofiber mats. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to examine the morphology and the structure of the prepared nanofiber mats. The effect of keratin on the porosity and the tensile strength of reinforcing nanofibers is investigated. The porosity ratio of the nanofiber mats goes up from 24.52 ± 2.12 for blank polyacrylonitrile (PAN (NF)) to 90.89 ± 1.91% for polyacrylonitrile nanofiber with 0.05 wt% keratin (PAN/0.05% K). Furthermore, keratin reinforcement improves the nanofiber's mechanical properties, which are important for wound dressing application, as well as its antibacterial activity without causing hemolysis (less than 2%). The best antibacterial activities were observed against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (30 ± 0.17 mm inhibition zone) and Staphylococcus aureus (29 ± 0.31 mm inhibition zone) for PAN/0.05% K sample, according to the antibacterial test. This research has a good potential to broaden the use of feather keratin-based nanofibers in wound healing.

    Abstract Psoriasis is characterized by cutaneous hyperproliferation, secondary to immune system dysregulation. Vitamin A regulates the immune response and sustains epithelial tissue hemostasis. The CYP1A1 gene, has many biological actions, including vitamin A metabolism. To evaluate CYP1A1 gene polymorphism and serum vitamin A level in patients with psoriasis vulgaris, a case-control study involving two groups was conducted: group 1 (45 patients with psoriasis vulgaris) served as the cased group and group 2 (45 healthy participants who were sex and age matched) acted as the control group.
