Abstract Increasing evidence has shown that noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) can affect drug efficiency by modulating drug sensitivity genes. Exploring the association between ncRNAs and drug sensitivity is essential for drug discovery and disease prevention. However, traditional biological experiments for identifying ncRNA-drug sensitivity associations are time-consuming and laborious. In this study, we develop a novel graph contrastive learning approach named NDSGCL to predict ncRNA-drug sensitivity. NDSGCL uses graph convolutional networks to learn feature representations of ncRNAs and drugs in ncRNA-drug bipartite graphs. It integrates local structural neighbours and global semantic neighbours to learn a more comprehensive representation by contrastive learning. Specifically, the local structural neighbours aim to capture the higher-order relationship in the ncRNA-drug graph, while the global semantic neighbours are defined based on semantic clusters of the graph that can alleviate the impact of data sparsity. The experimental results show that NDSGCL outperforms basic graph convolutional network methods, existing contrastive learning methods, and state-of-the-art prediction methods. Visualization experiments show that the contrastive objectives of local structural neighbours and global semantic neighbours play a significant role in contrastive learning. Case studies on two drugs show that NDSGCL is an effective tool for predicting ncRNA-drug sensitivity associations. Source code and datasets can be available on https://github.com/altriavin/NDSGCL.

Abstract Hydrogels are a promising option for detecting food spoilage in humid conditions, but current indicators are prone to mechanical flaws, posing a concern for packaging systems that require strong mechanical properties. Herein, a double network hydrogel was prepared by polymerizing methacrylamide in a chitosan system with aluminum chloride and glycerol. The resulting hydrogel demonstrated high stretchability (strain >1500 %), notch insensitivity, excellent fatigue resistance, and exceptional anti-freezing capabilities even at -21 °C. When incorporating bromothymol blue (BB) or methyl red (MR), or mixtures of these dyes into the hydrogels as indicators, they exhibited sensitive colorimetric responses to pH and NH

Abstract Background: Annulus fibrosus-endplate (AF-EP) junction lesions are important determinants for lumbar disc herniation (LDH). Utilizing biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (BESS), we introduce a novel repair method using bioabsorbable PushLock anchors with suture fibers to stretch disconnected AF tissues to the vertebral cortex.
Methods: The viewing and working portals are established to excise herniated disc materials causing radiculopathy. Through the working portal, a suture strand is passed through the intact AF tissue near the lesion and retrieved using the Suture Crossing Device. Then, the knotless suture limbs are secured into the cortical bone socket of the vertebral body with a PushLock anchor.
Conclusion: The procedure is a simple, safe, and feasible knotless suturing technique for the treatment of LDH with AF-EP junction lesions.

Abstract Bioassays using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) have gained increasing attention because of the high sensitivity of ICP-MS and the various strategies of labeling biomolecules with detectable metal tags. The classic strategy to tag the target biomolecules is through direct antibody-antigen interaction and DNA hybridization, and requires the separation of the bound from the unbound tags. Label-free ICP-MS techniques for biomolecular assays do not require direct labeling: they generate detectable metal ions indirectly from specific biomolecular reactions, such as enzymatic cleavage. Here, we highlight the development of three main strategies of label-free ICP-MS assays for biomolecules: (1) enzymatic cleavage of metal-labeled substrates, (2) release of immobilized metal ions from the DNA backbone, and (3) nucleic acid amplification-assisted aggregation and release of metal tags to achieve amplified detection. We briefly describe the fundamental basis of these label-free ICP-MS assays and discuss the benefits and drawbacks of various designs. Future research is needed to reduce non-specific adsorption and minimize background and interference. Analytical innovations are also required to confront challenges faced by in vivo applications.

Abstract With the steady increase in urbanization that has occurred, China has begun to suffer from serious urban sprawl. Both the increase in urbanization and the subsequent urban sprawl have led to major changes in CO₂ emissions. In this paper, we expand the STIRPAT model to empirically analyse the effects of China’s urbanization and urban sprawl on CO₂ emissions from 1997 to 2018, with regression results showing that both urbanization and urban sprawl have increased CO₂ emissions. Further analyses of the mechanisms indicate that urbanization can increase overall CO₂ emissions by not only increasing industrial CO₂ emissions, but also by increasing construction CO₂ emissions and residential consumption CO₂ emissions as well. Urban sprawl can increase overall carbon emissions by increasing CO₂ emissions from transport, construction and industry. We then make specific suggestions for China’s carbon reduction and low-carbon development based on these findings.

Abstract Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) constitute a prevalent class of noncoding RNAs localized within the nucleoli of eukaryotic cells. Their involvement in diverse diseases underscores the significance of forecasting associations between snoRNAs and diseases. However, conventional experimental techniques for such predictions suffer limitations in scalability, protracted timelines, and suboptimal success rates. Consequently, efficient computational methodologies are imperative to realize the accurate predictions of snoRNA-disease associations. Herein, we introduce GCLSDA-

Abstract While hydrogels have potential for food packaging, limited research on hydrogels with excellent mechanical performance and antibacterial activity for preserving chicken breasts. Herein, we created antibacterial hydrogels by embedding methyl-β-cyclodextrin/thyme oil inclusion complexes (MCD/TO-ICs) into a polyvinyl alcohol matrix containing dendrobium polysaccharides and guar gum in varying ratios using freeze-thaw cycling method. The resulting hydrogels exhibited a more compact structure than those without MCD/TO-ICs, enhancing thermal stability and increasing glass transition temperature due to additional intermolecular interactions between polymer chains that inhibited chain movement. XRD analysis showed no significant changes in crystalline phase, enabling formation of a 3D network through abundant hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the hydrogel demonstrated exceptional durability, with a toughness of 350 ± 25 kJ/m
