    Abstract In the second edition of this highly successful book, the authors once again aim to equip the reader with up-to-date information. This book, containing more than 200 cadaveric photos and 200 illustrations, aims to familiarize physicians practicing botulinum neurotoxin type A (BoNT-A) and filler injection with the anatomy of the facial mimetic muscles, vessels, and soft tissues in order to enable them to achieve optimum cosmetic results while avoiding possible adverse events. Anatomic considerations of importance when administering BoNT-A and fillers are identified and in addition invaluable clinical guidelines are provided, highlighting, for example, the preferred injection points for BoNT-A and the adequate depth of filler injection. Unique insights are also offered into the differences between Asians and Caucasians with regard to relevant anatomy. The contributing authors include an anatomist who offers distinctive anatomic perspectives on BoNT-A and filler treatments and three expert physicians from different specialties, namely a dermatologist, a plastic surgeon, and a cosmetic physician, who share insights gained during extensive clinical experience in the use of BoNT-A and fillers.

    Abstract This paper presents the design and prototype of a novel tri-aperture monocular laparoscopic objective that can acquire both stereoscopic views for depth information and a wide field of view (FOV) for situational awareness. The stereoscopic views are simultaneously captured via a shared objective with two displaced apertures and a custom prism. Overlapping crosstalk between the stereoscopic views is diminished by incorporating a strategically placed vignetting aperture. Meanwhile, the wide FOV is captured via a central third aperture of the same objective and provides a 2D view of the surgical field 2x as large as the area imaged by the stereoscopic views. We also demonstrate how the wide FOV provides a reference data set for stereo calibration, which enables absolute depth mapping in our experimental prototype.

    Abstract The accuracy of reconstructing depth maps or performing digital refocusing in light field cameras depends largely on how well the spatial and angular samples of light rays can be obtained. Ray sample errors induced by optical aberrations in a light field camera may be digitally corrected using the ray tracing data when its nominal lens design is available. However, the most commonly nominal lens prescription is not accessible to end users. Additionally, even if available, due to tolerances in optomechanical design, the ray tracing data can be inaccurate. We propose a calibration method based on measurements of fiducial markers on a checkerboard for modeling the imaging properties of light field cameras. The calibration accounts for vignetting, transverse ray errors, as well as pupil aberration, and can be applied to light field camera modeling of arbitrary pupil sampling systems. We further demonstrate the utility of the method for calibrating a tri-aperture camera that captures simultaneous stereo views via artificially induced transverse ray errors.

    Abstract Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has been established as the surgical approach of choice for lobectomy in patients with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Patients with clinical stage I NSCLC with no lymph node metastasis are considered candidates for VATS lobectomy. To rule out the presence of metastasis to lymph nodes or distant organs, patients should undergo meticulous clinical staging. Assessing patients' functional status is required to ensure that there are no medical contraindications, such as impaired pulmonary function or cardiac comorbidities. Although various combinations of the number, size, and location of ports are available, finding the best method of port placement for each surgeon is fundamental to maximize the efficiency of the surgical procedure. When conducting VATS lobectomy, it is always necessary to comply with the following oncological principles: (1) the vessels and bronchus of the target lobe should be individually divided, (2) systematic lymph node dissection is mandatory, and (3) touching the lymph node itself and rupturing the capsule of the lymph node should be minimized. Most surgeons conduct the procedure in the following sequence: (1) dissection along the hilar structure, (2) fissure division, (3) perivascular and peribronchial dissection, (4) individual division of the vessels and bronchus, (5) specimen retrieval, and (6) mediastinal lymph node dissection. Surgeons should obtain experience in enhancing the exposure of the dissection target and facilitating dissection. This review article provides the basic principles of the surgical techniques and practical maneuvers for performing VATS lobectomy easily, safely, and efficiently.

    Abstract Thoracic surgeons need to be aware of several important points regarding intraoperative lymph node dissection during surgery for non-small cell lung cancer with ground-glass opacities. The first point relates to the need for lymph node dissection during sublobar resection. Since even patients undergoing sublobar resection may benefit from lymph node dissection, it should be selectively performed according to adequate indications, which require further study. Second, there seems to be no difference in postoperative morbidity between systematic sampling and systematic dissection, but the survival benefit from systematic dissection remains unclear. The results of randomized controlled trials on this topic are conflicting, and their evidence is jeopardized by a high risk of bias in terms of the study design. Therefore, further randomized controlled trials with a sound design should investigate this issue. Third, more favorable survival outcomes tend to be positively associated with the number of examined lymph nodes. Minimum requirements for the number of examined lymph nodes in non-small cell lung cancer should be defined in the future. Finally, lobe-specific lymph node dissection does not have a negative prognostic impact. It should not be routinely performed, but it can be recommended in selected patients with smaller, less invasive tumors. Results from an ongoing randomized controlled trial on this topic should be awaited.

    Abstract Background: Nusinersen treatment has demonstrated efficacy in improving clinical outcomes for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), yet its impact on scoliosis progression remains unclear.
    Objective: This study aimed to assess the progression of scoliosis in pediatric patients with SMA undergoing nusinersen treatment.
    Methods: In this prospective study, data were systematically collected from Hong Kong pediatric SMA patients receiving nusinersen between 2018 and 2023. All patients had longitudinal radiographic studies pre-nusinersen, and at half-yearly or yearly intervals during treatment based on the scoliosis severity. Motor function evaluations were conducted pre-nusinersen, and after starting treatment at 6- and 12-month intervals.
    Results: Twenty-three patients ((SMA type 1 (SMA1) = 8, SMA type 2 (SMA2) = 7, SMA type 3 (SMA3) = 8)) with a median age of 5.8 years (range: 0.4-17.5 years) at nusinersen initiation, and median follow-up duration of 3.4 years (range: 1.1-5.2 years) were included. During the study period, motor scores remained stable or improved in 83% of patients. However, scoliosis progressed across all subtypes, with mean annual progression rates of 5.2, 11.9, and 3.6 degrees in SMA1, SMA2, and SMA3 respectively. Patients initiating nusinersen between ages 5 and 11 years exhibited the most rapid progression, with rates of 11.8, 16.5, and 7.3 degrees per year in SMA1, SMA2, and SMA3 respectively. Positive correlations were observed between the difference in CHOP-INTEND score post-nusinersen and scoliosis progression in SMA1 (rs = 0.741, p = 0.041). Conversely, negative correlations were found between the difference in HFMSE score post-nusinersen and scoliosis progression in SMA2 (rs =-0.890, p = 0.012) and SMA3 (rs =-0.777, p = 0.028).
    Conclusions: This study reveals that nusinersen treatment in symptomatic pediatric SMA patients with motor improvement is linked to increased scoliosis progression in SMA1, whereas it is associated with decreased progression in SMA2 and SMA3. Age, baseline Cobb angle, and motor milestone improvement are influential factors in scoliosis progression.
