    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: The Gu Yan Xiao tincture, a blend of traditional Chinese herbs, is traditionally used for osteoarthritis and related pain. This study investigated its mechanism of action in order to rationalize and validate its therapeutic use.
    Aim of the study: This study analyzed, in a rabbit model of knee osteoarthritis, whether and how Gu Yan Xiao tincture exerts therapeutic benefits by modulating chondrocyte autophagy.
    Materials and methods: The active constituents within the GYX tincture were identified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. The rabbit model was established by injecting animals with type II collagenase intra-articularly, and the effects of topically applied tincture were examined on osteoarthritis lesions of the knee using histopathology, micro-computed tomography and x-ray imaging. Effects of the tincture were also evaluated on levels of inflammatory cytokines, matrix metalloproteases, and autophagy in chondrocytes. As a positive control, animals were treated with sodium diclofenac.
    Results: The tincture mitigated the reduction in joint space, hyperplasia of the synovium and matrix metalloproteases in serum that occurred after injection of type II collagenase in rabbits. These therapeutic effects were associated with inhibition of mTOR and activation of autophagy in articular chondrocytes. Inhibiting mTOR with rapamycin potentiated the therapeutic effects of the tincture, while inhibiting autophagy with 3-methyladenine antagonized them.
    Conclusions: Gu Yan Xiao tincture mitigates tissue injury in a rabbit model of osteoarthritis, at least in part by inhibiting mTOR and thereby promoting autophagy in chondrocytes. These results rationalize the use of the tincture not only against osteoarthritis but also potentially other diseases involving inhibition of autophagy in bones and joints.

    Abstract In the setting of the increasing density of exploration wells, and the decreasing scale and increasing difficulty of discovering Jurassic paleogeomorphology reservoirs, it is urgent to deepen the fine depiction of pre-Jurassic paleogeomorphology features and to analyze their controlling effect on reservoirs. Based on abundant logging data combined with indoor microscopic observation and experimental testing, the paper applies the theory of reservoir configuration analysis for the first time to the single-channel period division of the pre-Jurassic Meng-Shaan paleochannel which deposited with the braided channel sand bodies.     Abstract Abstract In the setting of the increasing density of exploration wells, and the decreasing scale and increasing difficulty of discovering Jurassic paleogeomorphology reservoirs, it is urgent to deepen the fine depiction of pre-Jurassic paleogeomorphology features and to analyze their controlling effect on reservoirs. Based on abundant logging data combined with indoor microscopic observation and experimental testing, the paper applies the theory of reservoir configuration analysis for the first time to the single-channel period division of the pre-Jurassic Meng-Shaan paleochannel which deposited with the braided channel sand bodies. Meanwhile, it reveals the controlling effect of hydrocarbon accumulation and the distribution characteristics of the Yan 101 reservoir as ' paleogeomorphology and sedimentary facies combination' to determine the type, 'migration channel' to determine the distributing range, and 'low-amplitude structure' to determine the trap in the study area, and also the reservoir accumulation modes in different channel ranges have established. In conclusion, the single-channel boundary of the Meng-Shaan paleochannel in different periods controls the path of oil and gas migration, thus controlling the distribution range and reservoir type of the Yan 10 reservoir. Moreover, depending on the production data we derived that it should prefer the composite trap reservoir of the Fuxian period and the Yan 102 period, as well as the structural reservoir on the periphery of the Yan 102 period single-channel for the further exploration of the Yan 10 paleogeomorphology reservoirs within the development range of the Meng-Shaan ancient river. In particular, the lithologic trap reservoirs within the Fuxian period channel and the Meng-Shaan main channel, such as the reservoirs of the 'Source' of the secondary channel type and the paleochannel type, which could as a replacement accumulation model for increasing reserves and production.

    Abstract Changes in hydrothermal conditions have significant effects on vegetation, but there is still a lack of understanding of how vegetation responds to land surface (surface temperature and soil moisture) and meteorological (temperature and precipitation) conditions in mountain regions. This study examined the trends of leaf area index (LAI) in the Yan Mountains over the last four decades using Global Land Surface Satellite (GLASS) data. The results showed a persistent increase of LAI (greening) over 20 % to 80 % of the study area in growing season, spring, summer and autumn. Anthropogenic activities caused the greening trend by crop management before 2000 and afforestation after 2000. The increasing rate of LAI varied with elevation, and the most significant increase occurred in areas between 300 and 900 m, and the lowest increase occurred in areas below 300 m. Moreover, we found that LAI was negatively correlated with land surface temperature and soil moisture, but positively correlated with precipitation and air temperature. The time-lag effect was found between hydrothermal factors and LAI in the past four decades. There was a time lag of 2–3 months between LAI changes and temperature/precipitation during the early and late stages of the growing season, and a time lag of 0–1 month during the middle stage. Specifically, there was no time lag in vegetation response to surface soil moisture, and a time lag of 2–3 months in vegetation response to land surface temperature from July to October. Our findings provide insights into how vegetation adapts to land surface and climatic hydrothermal conditions in mountain regions and can be used by governments to develop policies for ecological protection.

    Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: The Jian-Yan-Ling (JYL) capsule is a famous anti-aging Chinese patent medicine. It is applied mainly to delay senescence to improve cognition in aging individuals. However, the action mechanisms of JYL for improving cognition have not been determined.
    Aim of the study: We will evaluate the effect of the JYL capsule at improving the cognition of aging mice by improving oxidative stress in the hippocampus and exploring its action mechanism.
    Materials and methods: A senescence mouse model was developed via intraperitoneal injection of D-galactose. The effect of the JYL capsule at improving the learning and memory abilities of mice was evaluated using the Morris water maze and novel object recognition tests. The apotosis of model mice hippocampus' were determined by TUNEL analysis. The antioxidant capacity of the JYL capsule was evaluated by determining the activities of antioxidant enzymes and expressions of oxidative products. The regulation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway of the JYL capsule was evaluated by determining the expressions of related proteins via western blotting analysis. In vitro, H
    Results: JYL capsules enhanced the learning and memory abilities of model mice according to behavioral tests. The results of TUNEL analysis showed that the JYL capsule ameliorated hippocampal apoptosis in model mice. JYL capsules also exerted significant antioxidant capacity by increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes while decreasing the levels of oxidative products both in the hippocampus and serum.     Abstract Introduction: Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is a physical and mental disorder in which long-term fatigue is the main symptom. CFS patients are often accompanied by functional gastrointestinal diseases (FGIDs), which lead to decreased quality of life and increased fatigue. Prolong-life-with-nine-turn-method (PLWNT) is a kind of physical and mental exercise. Its operation includes adjusting the mind, breathing and cooperating with eight self-rubbing methods and one upper body rocking method. PLWNT was used to improve the digestive function in ancient China and to treat FGIDs such as functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome in modern times. Previous studies have shown that PLWNT can reduce fatigue in patients with CFS. But it is unclear whether the effect of PLWNT on CFS fatigue is related to gastrointestinal function. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between PLWNT and fatigue and gastrointestinal function in patients with CFS.
    Methods: This study is a non-inferiority randomized controlled trial (RCT). The whole study period is 38 weeks, including 2 weeks of baseline evaluation, 12 weeks of intervention and 6 months of follow-up. Ninety-six CFS patients will be stratified random assigned to the intervention group (PLWNT) and the control group (cognitive behavior treatment) in the ratio of 1:1 through the random number table generated by SPSS. In the evaluation of results, Multidimensional Fatigue Inventory-20 (MFI-20), Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale (GSRS), Bristol Stool Form Scale (BSFS), and Short Form 36 item health survey (SF-36) will be evaluated at week 0 (baseline), week 6 (midterm), week 12 (endpoint) and month 9 (follow up). The intestinal flora will be evaluated at week 0 (baseline) and week 12 (endpoint). The data results will be processed by statistical experts. The data analysis will be based on the intention to treat principle and per-protocol analysis. In the efficacy evaluation, repeated measurement analysis of variance will be used for data conforming to normal distribution or approximate normal distribution. The data which do not conform to the analysis of repeated measurement variance will be analyzed by the generalized estimation equation Linear discriminant analysis will be used to clarify the difference species of intestinal flora. The significance level sets as 5%. The safety of interventions will be evaluated after each treatment session.
    Discussion: This trial will provide evidence to PLWNT exerting positive effects on fatigue and gastrointestinal function of CFS. It will further explore whether the improvement of PLWNT on CFS fatigue is related to gastrointestinal function.
    Trial registration: The trial was registered at Chinese Clinical Trial Registry http://www.chictr.org.cn/showproj.aspx?proj=151456 (Registration No.: ChiCTR2200056530). Date: 2022-02-07.
