    Abstract The ratio of the B_{s}^{0} and B^{+} fragmentation fractions f_{s} and f_{u} is studied with B_{s}^{0}→J/ψϕ and B^{+}→J/ψK^{+} decays using data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at 7, 8, and 13 TeV center-of-mass energies. The analysis is performed in bins of B-meson momentum, longitudinal momentum, transverse momentum, pseudorapidity, and rapidity. The fragmentation-fraction ratio f_{s}/f_{u} is observed to depend on the B-meson transverse momentum with a significance of 6.0σ. This dependency is driven by the 13 TeV sample (8.7σ), while the results for the other collision energies are not significant when considered separately. Furthermore, the results show a 4.8σ evidence for an increase of f_{s}/f_{u} as a function of collision energy.

    Abstract Generating specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that neutralize multiple antigen variants is challenging. Here, we present a strategy to generate mAbs that bind seven subtypes of botulinum neurotoxin serotype F (BoNT/F) that differ from each other in amino acid sequence by up to 36%. Previously, we identified 28H4, a mouse mAb with poor cross-reactivity to BoNT/F1, F3, F4, and F6 and with no detectable binding to BoNT/F2, F5, or F7. Using multicolor labeling of the different BoNT/F subtypes and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) of yeast displayed single-chain Fv (scFv) mutant libraries, 28H4 was evolved to a humanized mAb hu6F15.4 that bound each of seven BoNT/F subtypes with high affinity (KD 5.81 pM to 659.78 pM). In contrast, using single antigen FACS sorting, affinity was increased to the subtype used for sorting but with a decrease in affinity for other subtypes. None of the mAb variants showed any binding to other BoNT serotypes or to HEK293 or CHO cell lysates by flow cytometry, thus demonstrating stringent BoNT/F specificity. Multicolor FACS-mediated antibody library screening is thus proposed as a general method to generate multi-specific antibodies to protein subtypes such as toxins or species variants.

    Abstract The ratio of the $B^0_s$ and $B^0$ fragmentation fractions, $f_s/f_d$, in proton-proton collisions at the LHC, is obtained as a function of $B$-meson transverse momentum and collision centre-of-mass energy from the combined analysis of different $B$-decay channels measured by the LHCb experiment. The results are described by a linear function of the meson transverse momentum, or with a function inspired by Tsallis statistics. Precise measurements of the branching fractions of the $B^0_s \to J/\psi \phi$ and $B^0_s \to D^-_s \pi^+$ decays are performed, reducing their uncertainty by about a factor of two with respect to previous world averages. Numerous $B^0_s$ decay branching fractions, measured at the LHCb experiment, are also updated using the new values of $f_s/f_d$ and branching fractions of normalisation channels. These results reduce a major source of systematic uncertainty in several searches for new physics performed through measurements of $B^0_s$ branching fractions.

    Abstract In contrast to earlier ideas that halogens behave inertly in soil, extensive biogeochemical cycling of fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) and iodine (I) has been shown for temperate forests. To further advance our understanding of halogen behaviour in soil beyond humid temperate forests, we sampled soil profiles in protected areas along the Chilean Coastal Cordillera, representing a pronounced climatic gradient spanning from arid to humid.     Abstract The branching fraction of the rare B_{s}^{0}→ϕμ^{+}μ^{-} decay is measured using data collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 1, 2, and 6  fb^{-1}, respectively. The branching fraction is reported in intervals of q^{2}, the square of the dimuon invariant mass. In the q^{2} region between 1.1 and 6.0  GeV^{2}/c^{4}, the measurement is found to lie 3.6 standard deviations below a standard model prediction based on a combination of light cone sum rule and lattice QCD calculations. In addition, the first observation of the rare B_{s}^{0}→f_{2}^{'}(1525)μ^{+}μ^{-} decay is reported with a statistical significance of 9 standard deviations and its branching fraction is determined.

    Abstract In contrast to earlier ideas that halogens behave inertly in soil, extensive biogeochemical cycling of fluorine (F), chlorine (Cl), bromine (Br) and iodine (I) has been shown for temperate forests. To further advance our understanding of halogen behaviour in soil beyond humid temperate forests, we sampled soil profiles in protected areas along the Chilean Coastal Cordillera, representing a pronounced climatic gradient spanning from arid to humid. Halogen concentrations in soil were analysed by combustion ion chromatography. Highest average total halogen concentrations occurred at the arid site (Cl, F: 4270 and 897 mg kg⁻¹) as well as the humid end of the climatic gradient (Br, I: 42.6 and 9.8 mg kg⁻¹). Vertical distribution patterns of halogens were most pronounced at the humid end of the gradient and became less distinct under drier climate. The climatic gradient demonstrates the important role of biotic processes (e.g. the halogenation of organic matter) on the retention of halogens in the soil. However, this climate-specific role may be overridden by mainly abiotic processes within a given climate zone (e.g. weathering, leaching, sorption to secondary soil minerals, evaporative enrichment), resulting in vertical relocation of halogens in the soil. Since some of these processes oppose each other, complex interactions and depth distributions of F, Cl, Br and I occur in the soil. In summary, our findings provide new insights into the fate of halogens in mineral soil of different climatic zones, which is important, for example, when radiohalogens are deposited on a large scale after nuclear accidents.

    Abstract Generating specific monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that neutralize multiple antigen variants is challenging. Here, we present a strategy to generate mAbs that bind seven subtypes of botulinum neurotoxin serotype F (BoNT/F) that differ from each other in amino acid sequence by up to 36%. Previously, we identified 28H4, a mouse mAb with poor cross-reactivity to BoNT/F1, F3, F4, and F6 and with no detectable binding to BoNT/F2, F5, or F7. Using multicolor labeling of the different BoNT/F subtypes and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) of yeast displayed single-chain Fv (scFv) mutant libraries, 28H4 was evolved to a humanized mAb hu6F15.4 that bound each of seven BoNT/F subtypes with high affinity (KD 5.81 pM to 659.78 pM). In contrast, using single antigen FACS sorting, affinity was increased to the subtype used for sorting but with a decrease in affinity for other subtypes. None of the mAb variants showed any binding to other BoNT serotypes or to HEK293 or CHO cell lysates by flow cytometry, thus demonstrating stringent BoNT/F specificity. Multicolor FACS-mediated antibody library screening is thus proposed as a general method to generate multi-specific antibodies to protein subtypes such as toxins or species variants.

    Abstract Human botulism is primarily caused by botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) serotypes A, B and E, with around 1% caused by serotype F (BoNT/F). BoNT/F comprises at least seven different subtypes with the amino acid sequence difference between subtypes as high as 36%. The sequence differences present a significant challenge for generating monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) that can bind, detect and neutralize all BoNT/F subtypes. We used repertoire cloning of immune mouse antibody variable (V) regions and yeast display to generate a panel of 33 lead single chain Fv (scFv) mAbs that bound one or more BoNT/F subtypes with a median equilibrium dissociation constant (KD) of 4.06 × 10-9 M. By diversifying the V-regions of the lead mAbs and selecting for cross reactivity we generated five mAbs that bound each of the seven subtypes. Three scFv binding non-overlapping epitopes were converted to IgG that had KD for the different BoNT/F subtypes ranging from 2.2×10-8 M to 1.47×10-12 pM. An equimolar combination of the mAbs was able to potently neutralize BoNT/F1, F2, F4 and F7 in the mouse neutralization assay. The mAbs have potential utility as diagnostics capable of recognizing the known BoNT/F subtypes and could be developed as antitoxins to prevent and treat type F botulism.

    Abstract A família Cactaceae apresenta mais de 1.500 espécies no mundo, ocorrendo espécies endêmicas em todo o território nacional. Em populações naturais, tais elementos sofrem fortes pressões antrópicas, o que aumenta consideravelmente o seu risco de extinção. O objetivo do trabalho foi realizar um estudo sobre a distribuição espacial e estrutura populacional de Pilosocereus pachycladus F. Ritter subsp. pernambucoensis (F. Ritter) Zappi e Cereus jamacaru DC. subsp. jamacaru em duas áreas de Caatinga do Agreste do estado da Paraíba, Brasil. Os ambientes de estudo estão localizados no Instituto Nacional do Semiárido (INSA), Campina Grande-PB, e no Sítio Umburana, Bananeiras-PB. Foram alocadas 10 parcelas amostrais de 400 m² em cada ambiente de estudo, e todos os indivíduos de P. pachycladus subsp. pernambucoensis e C. jamacaru subsp. jamacaru foram contabilizados. A distribuição espacial das espécies, não apresentaram tendência ao agrupamento nas populações localizadas no INSA. Nas populações do Sítio Umburana, a tendência é ao agrupamento. De acordo com índice de agrupamento de Payandeh (Pi) a densidade populacional e absoluta nas populações do Sítio Umburana é maior, se comparado às populações do INSA. Para os padrões espaciais, nas populações de Cactaceae do Sítio Umburana, os indivíduos de ambas as espécies apresentam distribuição agrupada e nas populações do INSA apresentaram a tendência ao não agrupamento. Fatores como distúrbios naturais ou antrópicos, condições ambientais e disponibilidade de recursos, influenciaram a estrutura populacional de P. pachycladus e C. jamacaru.

    Abstract The relative abundance of the three decay modes B(0)→D(-)K(+), B(0)→D(-)π(+), and B(s)(0)→D(s)(-)π(+) produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC is determined from data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35 pb(-1). The branching fraction of B(0)→D(-)K(+) is found to be B(B(0)→D(-)K(+)) = (2.01 ± 0.18(stat) ± 0.14(syst)) × 10(-4). The ratio of fragmentation fractions f(s)/f(d) is determined through the relative abundance of B(s)(0)→D(s)(-)π(+) to B(0)→D(-)K(+) and B(0)→D(-)π(+), leading to f(s)/f(d) = 0.253 ± 0.017 ± 0.017 ± 0.020, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and theoretical, respectively.
