Abstract The first observation of the suppressed semileptonic B_{s}^{0}→K^{-}μ^{+}ν_{μ} decay is reported. Using a data sample recorded in pp collisions in 2012 with the LHCb detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2  fb^{-1}, the branching fraction B(B_{s}^{0}→K^{-}μ^{+}ν_{μ}) is measured to be [1.06±0.05(stat)±0.08(syst)]×10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second one represents the combined systematic uncertainties. The decay B_{s}^{0}→D_{s}^{-}μ^{+}ν_{μ}, where D_{s}^{-} is reconstructed in the final state K^{+}K^{-}π^{-}, is used as a normalization channel to minimize the experimental systematic uncertainty. Theoretical calculations on the form factors of the B_{s}^{0}→K^{-} and B_{s}^{0}→D_{s}^{-} transitions are employed to determine the ratio of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix elements |V_{ub}|/|V_{cb}| at low and high B_{s}^{0}→K^{-} momentum transfer.

A Case Study of a Parish-Based Voluntary Partner Abuse Intervention Program

    2020  Volume 14

Abstract: ... 100 men have voluntarily sought help for IPV/A perpetration from “The Men’s Group” (TMG) at St. Pius V ...

Abstract Literature on Latino men and intervention for intimate partner violence/abuse (IPV/A) is slim. Over 100 men have voluntarily sought help for IPV/A perpetration from “The Men’s Group” (TMG) at St. Pius V parish in Chicago, IL (US) and remained engaged for extended periods. Given the rarity of prolonged non-court mandated engagement in batterer intervention programs (BIPs), a case study was conducted to explore how TMG functions. Drawing on multiple data sources, this study examined development and implementation of TMG, while also investigating contextual factors, motivators and facilitators of participants’ involvement. Data revealed that TMG functions within a supportive community context by using a mixture of traditional techniques and innovative practices, creating a unique treatment modality. The program was found to be culturally-sensitive and spirituality-based. Reasons for initial attendance varied but included: (1) fear of losing or actual loss of their partner/family; (2) acknowledging a problem and desiring to change for self or others; and (3) a desire to reach inner peace. Three themes shed light on why men remain engaged in TMG, including: (1) being met with respect by facilitators; (2) experiencing TMG as “family”; and (3) gaining benefits. Reliance upon the criminal justice system is not enough to address IPV/A perpetration. This program shows promise as an alternative or supplement to traditional BIPs, which typically rely on clients being court-mandated to attend treatment. Given the widespread nature of IPV/A, understanding the operation of potential community-based alternatives or supplements to BIPs is critical in widening access to treatment.

Abstract Roraimaea aurantiaca Struwe, S.Nilsson & V.A.Albert, a white-sand endemic species, was previously known from only two specimens collected in Roraima state, Brazil. Our new field collections and re-identified herbarium specimens expand this species’ distribution and include the first records from the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Based on this effort, we present a distribution map, preliminary conservation status of Endangered, the first photographs of living plants, and an updated morphological description. This study aggregates new information on the flora of the northern Amazon Basin, in addition to discussing conservation of R. aurantiaca.

Abstract The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has forced all countries worldwide to rapidly develop and implement widespread testing to control and manage the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). reverse-transcription (RT)-qPCR is the gold standard molecular diagnostic method for COVID-19, mostly in automated testing platforms. These systems are accurate and effective, but also costly, time-consuming, high-technological, infrastructure-dependent, and currently suffer from commercial reagent supply shortages. The reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) can be used as an alternative testing method. Here, we present a novel versatile (real-time and colorimetric) RT-LAMP for the simple (one-step), affordable (~1.7 €/sample), and rapid detection of SARS-CoV-2 targeting both ORF1ab and N genes of the novel virus genome. We demonstrate the assay on RT-qPCR-positive clinical samples, obtaining most positive results under 25 min. In addition, a novel 30-min one-step drying protocol has been developed to stabilize the RT-LAMP reaction mixtures, allowing them to be stored at room temperature functionally for up to two months, as predicted by the Q 10 . This Dry-RT-LAMP methodology is suitable for potentially ready-to-use COVID-19 diagnosis. After further testing and validation, it could be easily applied both in developed and in low-income countries yielding rapid and reliable results.

Abstract The intrinsic electronic factors that determine reactivity in prototypical identity nucleophilic vinylic substitution reactions, X(-) + ViX → XVi + X(-) (Vi = vinyl), have been studied by performing quantum chemical calculations (OPBE/6-311++G(d,p)). Of the two limiting reaction types envisaged--the S(N)Vπ and S(N)Vσ mechanisms--the former is preferred for most combinations of nucleophiles and substrates, except for the combination of unactivated substrates and poor nucleophiles, as seen for the much studied reactions Cl(-) + CH2CHCl and Br(-) + CH2CHBr. It was found that periodic trends for S(N)Vπ are essentially the same as those previously reported for nucleophilic aromatic substitution, S(N)Ar, while intrinsic S(N)Vσ nucleophilicity parallels aliphatic S(N)2. It is therefore concluded that S(N)V reactivity in general can be understood in terms of this mechanistic dichotomy. Abstract Bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) are increasingly used as substitutes for bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine disrupting chemical (EDC) with obesogenic activity. We investigated the in vitro effects of BPS and BPF on the adipogenesis of human adipose-derived stem cells (hASCs) exposed to different doses (0.01, 0.1, 1, 10 and 25 μM), stopping the adipogenic process at 7 or 14 days. Intracellular lipid accumulation was quantified by the Oil Red O assay, gene expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), CCAT/enhancer-binding protein (C/EBPα), lipoprotein-lipase (LPL) and fatty acid binding protein 4 (FABP4), by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and protein levels by Western Blot. hASCs with BPF or BPS produced a linear dose-response increase in intracellular lipid accumulation and in gene expression of the adipogenic markers, confirmed by protein levels. Co-treatment ICI 182,780 significantly inhibited BPF- but not BPS-induced lipid accumulation. Given the affinity of bisphenols for diverse nuclear receptors, their obesogenic effects may result from a combination of pathways rather than a single mechanism. Further research is warranted on the manner in which chemicals interfere with adipogenic differentiation. To our best knowledge, this report shows for the first time the obesogenic potential of BPF in hASCs.

Abstract Unlabelled: We report on 215 consecutive patients with isolated aortic replacement of which 91 received an Intact Medtronic (IM) prosthesis and 124 a Carpentier Edwards SAV. (CE). More than 50% of patients were over 70 years old. Follow-up was complete for 95% of patients. Mean follow-up was 6.04 years (16 days-13 years); a total of 1244 patient-years (IM 6.61years, 590 patient-years, CE 5.95 years, 670 patient-years).
Results: the following results are expressed for IM and CE groups respectively. Early mortality: 3.3% and 8.13%. Late mortality: 23 and 27 patients. Survival at 13 years: 53.31+/-7.63% and 47.47+/-7.9%. Major thromboembolism: 0.34% and 0.30% per patient-year. SVD: 0.16% and 0.14% per patient-year. Endocarditis: 0.33% and 0.29%. Re-operation: 0.5% and 0.44%. Over 95% of patients are re-operation free at 13 years.
Conclusion: Intact and Carpentier valves had similar durability and clinical/hemodynamic results. Both have proved excellent aortic valve substitutes in elderly patients.

Abstract Introduction: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) infection is a severe complication. Early diagnosis could help to decrease morbidity and treatment costs. Lactate has been used for the diagnosis of other central nervous system infections. The aim of this study is to determine the usefulness of lactate for the diagnosis of VPS infection.
Methodology: Retrospective cohort study. Lactate was measured in patients who consulted with VPS dysfunction between May 2019 and May 2022. Mean were compared according to culture results. A Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curve was performed to determine the appropriate cut-off point.
Result: Lactate has a high negative predictive value but a low positive predictive value for the diagnosis of ventriculitis.

Abstract "In vitro" synthesis of benzylpenicillin and phenoxymethylpenicillin has been carried out by direct N-acylation of 6-aminopenicillanic acid (6-APA) with S-phenylacetyl- and (S-phenoxyacetyl)glutathione. The reactions were catalyzed by the enzyme acyl-CoA: 6-APA acyltransferase (AT) from Penicillium chrysogenum and in both cases the synthesis of antibiotics was enhanced by CoA. Penicillin K, a natural penicillin, was also synthesized "in vitro" by incubating (S-octanoyl)glutathione, 6-APA and AT, but in this case the formation of antibiotic required the presence of CoA. Furthermore, benzylpenicillin was obtained from (S-phenylacetyl)cysteinylglycine and 6-APA, suggesting that some intermediates of the gamma-glutamyl cycle are directly involved in the biosynthesis of penicillins. To explain "in vivo" formation of this beta-lactam antibiotic, a biosynthetic pathway which includes several glutathione-S-derivatives and a non-enzymatic reaction, is proposed.
