Abstract Introduction: The aims of this study were to determine the usefulness of the Modified (10-item) Scale of Perceived Stress related to COVID-19 (EEP-10-C, for its acronym in Spanish) and to identify the levels of stress perceived by students of medical sciences in Cuba due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, with self-reported data of students from 14 Cuban universities of medical sciences (n=200), through an online survey. The EEP-10-C was used as an instrument to identify stress. Its validity was determined through a confirmatory factor analysis and its internal consistency and reliability was measured by the Cronbach's alpha. A cluster analysis was performed to establish as the cut-off point the centre of the cluster with the highest values of stress perceived by the scale.
Results: The average age of the sample was 23.30± 1.91 years, with observed scores of the EEP-10-C between 0 and 29 points (13.25±5.404). When applying the cut-off point ≥25, only two students had high rates of perceived stress. The confirmatory factor analysis supported the validity of the instrument (α=0.755). The cut-off point ≥20 was proposed as a reference of high stress perceived for the study population, when applying this one, 14% of students presented high rates of stress.
Conclusions: In Cuba, students of the medical sciences have participated in research and healthcare support, despite which they have presented low levels of stress. The main contribution of the research was the validation of the EEP-10-C for its use in assessing levels of stress in Cuban medical students, proposing the cut-off point ≥20 as a reference of high stress perceived.

Abstract Introduction: epidermolysis bullosa refers to a heterogeneous group of chronic hereditary pimple-like diseases affecting the skin and mucosae with blisters and vesicles after minimal injury, with variable involvement of other organs. Case report: 3-year-old female patient with exulcerated skin lesions and some erythema crust-plaques, with scaling at exposure sites such as hands, knees, feet, back of the neck and genitals. She was admitted to “Hermanos Cordové” Pediatric Teaching Hospital in Manzanillo. The medical care was based on maintaining the integrity of the skin avoiding trauma, temperature control, nutrition and prevention of secondary infections. A simple epidermolysis bullosa is diagnosed by skin biopsy. Conclusions: the disease is scarcely known with low incidence and prevalence. It is a major problem in the family and social environment, as parents are dealing with a rare disease of genetic origin and poor prognosis. Medical-social support helps to minimize the problems by means of information and coordination. Treatment requires the care of a multidisciplinary and specialized team.

Abstract Introduction: traumatic injuries are the leading cause of death in young people, ages under 45, and brain injuries have a high incidence of death in more than half of those suffering from these injuries. Objective: to characterize patients with severe cranioencephalic trauma in the Intensive Care Unit at Arnaldo Milián Castro General Teaching Hospital during the year 2018. Methods: an observational, descriptive and retrospective study was conducted in 38 patients with the diagnosis of severe head trauma from January 1, 2018 to January 1, 2019. Medical records were reviewed; variables such as age, cause of trauma, type of injury, complications and hospital staying were collected. Results: male patients predominated (92,11%), ages between 36 and 64 years (50 %); 50 % of traumas were due to traffic accidents. Subdural hematoma represented 52,63 % of lesions and pneumonia the most common complication (65,79 %). Patients admitted for more than 9 days predominated (44,74%); 73,68 % of patients were admitted alive; 65.79 % of patients underwent surgery. Severe cerebral edema was found among the causes of death (70 %). Conclusions: male patients after the third decade of life are prone to severe cranioencephalic trauma. Intervention on primary lesions avoids complications, where ventilation and prolonged hospital staying can trigger sepsis and act as factors affecting survival.
