    Abstract This study seeks to investigate the therapeutic effects of Si Miao San (SMS) on hyperuricemia and its underlying mechanisms, particularly focusing on the role of intestinal flora. The key components of SMS were identified using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). To establish a rat model of hyperuricemia, an intraperitoneal injection of potassium oxonate was performed, followed by oral administration of various concentrations of SMS. The study evaluated the status of hyperuricemia, renal pathology, xanthine oxidase (XO) activity, and intestinal flora. Utilizing HPLC, we identified five active components of SMS. Following SMS intervention, there was a significant reduction in serum levels of uric acid (UA), blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine, accompanied by an increase in urine UA levels in rats with hyperuricemia. Distinct pathological injuries were evident in the renal tissues of hyperuricemic rats, and these were partially alleviated following SMS intervention. Moreover, SMS exhibited a dose-dependent reduction in XO activity both in the serum and hepatic tissues. Notably, SMS contributed to an enhancement in the diversity of intestinal flora in hyperuricemic rats. The intervention of SMS resulted in a reduction in the abundance of certain bacterial species, including Parabacteroides johnsonii, Corynebacterium urealyticum, and Burkholderiales bacterium. This suggests that SMS may exert anti-hyperuricemia effects, potentially by modulating the composition of intestinal flora.

    Abstract Hemiboea shimentaiensis (Gesneriaceae), a new species from northern Guangdong, China, is described and illustrated. It is most similar to H. gamosepala, H. rubribracteata and H. malipoensis in the nearly white corolla, which appears in a few species of Hemiboea, and nearly glabrous inner base of the corolla tube. It can be easily distinguished from the latter three species by the stoloniferous habit, distinct silvery veins, glabrous corolla except for a ring of hairs inside, anther coherent along ventral face when young, but cohering apically at maturity, three separate staminodes with lateral ones resembling deformed anthers, and with few sterile pollen grains inside, to antheroids at the tips of the staminodes. The life cycle and fluctuations in the population are unknown and need further study, the conservation status of H. shimentaiensis was not assessed.

    Abstract Background: Ancestry informative markers are regarded as useful tools for inferring the ancestral information of an individual, which have been widely used in the criminal investigations and population genetic studies. Previously, a multiplex amplification panel containing 39 AIM-InDel loci was constructed. This study aims to investigate the genetic polymorphisms of these 39 AIM-InDel loci in Yunnan Hani and Miao ethnic groups, and to uncover their genetic affinities with reference populations based on the AIM-InDel markers.
    Materials and methods: In this research, 39 AIM-InDel profiles of 203 unrelated Miao individuals and 203 unrelated Hani individuals in Yunnan province of China were acquired. Additionally, we evaluated the genetic polymorphisms of 39 InDel loci in Yunnan Miao and Hani groups. Moreover, the genetic relationships among Yunnan Miao, Hani and reference populations were also clarified based on Nei's genetic distances, pairwise fixation indexes, principal component analyses, phylogenetic analyses, and STRUCTURE analyses.
    Results: Genetic diversity analyses demonstrated that these InDel loci showed varying degrees of genetic polymorphisms, and could be utilized in forensic identifications in Yunnan Miao and Hani groups. The results of principal component analyses, phylogenetic analyses and Structure analyses revealed that Yunnan Miao and Hani groups had closer genetic relationships with East Asian populations, especially with the populations from Southern China. This research enriched the genetic data of Chinese ethnic minority, and provided ancestral information of Yunnan Miao and Hani groups from the perspective of population genetics.

    Abstract Objective. The aim of this review and meta-analysis was to assess the effects and safety of modified Si-Miao pill (mSMP) in treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Design. A systematic literature search was carried out in eight databases from their available dates of inception to April 2020. After screening, fifteen randomized, controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the effects and safety of mSMP in combination with western medicine (including disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)) in treating rheumatoid arthritis patients were included after screening. Results. In comparison with DMARDs, or coadministration of DMARDs and NSAIDs, mSMP in combination with western medicine significantly lowered erythrocyte sedimentation rate (mean difference (MD) = -10.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) [−12.19, −9.03]), C-reactive protein (MD = −6.50, 95% CI [−8.43, −4.56]), rheumatoid factors (MD = −17.31, 95% CI [−24.34, −10.27]), swollen joint count (MD = −1.63, 95% CI [−2.29, −0.97]), tender joint count (MD = −1.98, 95% CI [−2.34, −1.62]), and morning stiffness time (MD = −24.37, 95% CI [−29.41, 19.33]) and ameliorated the condition of patients (odds ratio (OR) = 3.69, 95% CI [2.64, 5.14]). Additionally, mSMP in combination with western medicine seemed safer (OR = 0.49, 95% CI [0.30, 0.81]). Conclusion. The results of the meta-analysis study have shown that mSMP in combination with western medicine therapies appears to be more effective and safer than western medicine alone in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis including reducing inflammatory markers and adverse events and improving symptoms. Howbeit, more high-grade, large-scale RCTs of mSMP in various countries and regions are still needed.

    Abstract Background: Classic Kaposi sarcoma (CKS) is a vascular sarcoma associated with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), which is known to be more common in Mediterranean elderly men and is characterized by indolent clinical behavior. Xinjiang province in China is considered an endemic region for Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), with higher incidence among adults of Kazak and Uyghur ethnicities. Cases of CKS are rarely reported in inland China. Here, we followed a case of CKS for 7 years in a patient of Miao ethnic background in southwestern China.
    Case presentation: A 63-year-old Miao (southwestern China) man was initially diagnosed with CKS in 2010, having a history of limb lesions for 37 years, with left eyelid and binaural lesions for 9 years. He did not have sexual contact with men and was human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative. Due to his lumbago and fever, spinal tuberculosis in the lumbar vertebra was highly suspected after computed tomography (CT) scan. However, diagnostic antituberculosis treatment for 4 weeks failed. The patient was followed up in 2016, when the rash was recovering as the systemic symptoms improved. A new CT was performed, which showed a partial response despite the absence of any medical treatment. The open reading frame (ORF)-K1 of KSHV from skin tissue of the foot was amplified and sequenced, and K1 belonged to subtype A. This genotype is consistent with the typical subtype present in Xinjiang.
    Conclusions: We describe spontaneous partial regression of CKS in a patient of Miao ethnicity in inland China. Our sample may represent an unknown, novel genotype. Surveillance and regulating the immune state may represent a valuable approach for this rare disease.

    Abstract Objective: Si Miao San (SMS) is a traditional Chinese formula used in China to treat rheumatic diseases. To date, its mechanism in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treatment is uncertain. Our study aims to assess the antiarthritic effects of SMS in experimental arthritic rats.
    Materials and methods: SMS (8.63, 4.31, and 2.16 g/kg/day) was orally administered after the first immunization from day 14 to day 53. The effects of SMS on rats with collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) were evaluated by arthritis score and histological assessment. The levels of cytokines and anti-CII antibodies in rat serum were measured by ELISAs. The expression of oxidative stress parameters was detected by biochemical assay kits. The levels of Nrf2, HO-1, NQO1, and PTEN were determined by western blotting.
    Results: Medium- and high-dose SMS treatment significantly decreased arthritis scores and alleviated ankle joint histopathology in the rats with CIA. It inhibited the production of IL-6, TNF-

    Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to determine whether Si-Miao-Yong-An decoction (SMYAD) could protect cardiomyocytes from ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury and its underlying mechanisms.
    Methods: C57BL/6 mice were used to establish a model of myocardial infarction by I/R injury and treated by SMYAD for 4 weeks. Then, the cardiac functions of mice were evaluated by cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Histopathological analysis for the heart remodeling was detected by H&E and Masson staining. The protein expression of collagen I, MMP9, and TNF
    Results: SMYAD improved cardiac functions such as ventricular volume and ejection fraction of the rats with ischemia/reperfusion injury. Morphological assay indicated that SMYAD reduced the scar size and inhibited fibrosis formation. It was found that SMYAD could regulate collagen I, MMP9, and TNF
    Conclusion: SMYAD exerted protective effects on ischemia/reperfusion injury in myocardial cells by activating autophagy and inhibiting pyroptosis. This might be the reason why SMYAD protected myocardial tissue and improved cardiac function in mice with ischemia/reperfusion.
