Abstract Photon-electron interactions are essential for many areas such as energy conversion, signal processing, and emerging quantum science. However, the current demonstrations are typically targeted to fiber and on-chip applications and lack of study in wave space. Here, we introduce a concept of optoelectronic metasurface that is capable of realizing direct and efficient optical-microwave interactions in free space. The optoelectronic metasurface is realized via a hybrid integration of microwave resonant meta-structures with a photoresponsive material. As a proof of concept, we construct an ultrathin optoelectronic metasurface using photodiodes that is bias free, which is modeled and analyzed theoretically by using the light-driven electronic excitation principle and microwave network theory. The incident laser and microwave from the free space will interact with the photodiode-based metasurface simultaneously and generate strong laser-microwave coupling, where the phase of output microwave depends on the input laser intensity. We experimentally verify that the reflected microwave phase of the optoelectronic metasurface decreases as the incident laser power becomes large, providing a distinct strategy to control the vector fields by the power intensity. Our results offer fundamentally new understanding of the metasurface capabilities and the wave-matter interactions in hybrid materials.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate how international students enrolled on medical and surgical bachelor's degree programs (MBBS) in China perceived online medical education course, compared to native Chinese students during the Covid-19 pandemic. The perceptions of 38 MBBS and 31 Chinese sophomores were surveyed using the Chaoxing platform. The international student group's mean satisfaction with online teaching was 2.737 on a 5-point scale, much lower than the Chinese students' mean score of 4.355 (p < 0.05). Similarly, the international students expressed less satisfaction than the Chinese learners with other aspects of the course, including the teacher's level, at 3.964 ± 0.818 versus 4.445 ± 0.548 (p < 0.05); curriculum organization, at 3.651 ± 0.848 versus 4.333 ± 0.568 (p < 0.05); and self-learning level, at 3.634 ± 0.996 versus 3.686 ± 0.949 (p > 0.05), respectively. There were also noteworthy differences between the progress made by the international students in Chinese language learning, which was positively correlated with satisfaction with teaching on the online medical education (p < 0.05). The results suggest that, while online teaching was a necessary response to the Covid-19 pandemic, satisfaction with this mode of education is lower among international students than their Chinese counterparts.

Abstract Long-chain alkyl diols (LCDs) can be used as organic geochemical proxies for paleoceanographic change, especially in marginal sea areas where large volumes of sediments are deposited rapidly and continuously. However, little is known about the applicability and response on a millennium scale in relation with existing records in those sediments. We reconstruct changes in upwelling and terrestrial organic matter (OM) input in core sediments from the Zhejiang Fujian coastal station (T08) and Yangtze River Estuary station (T06) in the inner shelf of the East China Sea (ECS) over the last millennium, using the LCD based proxies: diol index 2 (DI-2), and FC321,15-diol. Our results show that DI-2 values ([(C28+C30)1,14-diols]/([(C28+C30)1,13-diols]+[(C28+C30)1,14-diols])) at T08 decrease significantly during 600–400 yr BP but increase gradually after 400 yr BP. The FC321,15-diol proxy ([C321,15-diol]×100/([(C28+C30)1,13-diols]+[(C30+C32)1,15-diols])) at T06 shows marked fluctuations during 1000–800 yr BP, followed by a significant decline during 800–500 yr BP but a subsequent increase from 500 to 300 yr BP. We find that variations in DI-2 values are broadly consistent with changes in the strength of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM) and the Kuroshio Current and are likely linked to changes in the frequency and intensity of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The increased strength of the EASM causes greater offshore movement of the upper layer of seawater, which in turn triggers upwelling of bottom waters formed by Kuroshio subsurface waters. We find that variations in FC321,15-diol proxy are controlled mainly by the East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM) and the Yangtze River discharge. By increasing the strength of the EAWM, southward transportation of material deposited in the estuary of the Yangtze River by the ECS coastal currents is promoted. In addition, we synthesize records of other organic geochemical indicators nearby core sediments in the ECS; these records emphasize the importance of reconstructing the ...

Abstract Multi-sensor fusion system has many advantages, such as reduce error and improve filtering accuracy. The observability of the system state is an important index to test the convergence accuracy and speed of the designed Kalman filter. In this paper, we evaluate different multi-sensor fusion systems from the perspective of observability. To adjust and optimize the filter performance before filtering, in this paper, we derive the expression form of estimation error covariance of three different fusion methods and discussed both observable degree of fusion center and local filter of fusion step. Based on the ODAEPM, we obtained their discriminant matrix of observable degree and the relationship among different fusion methods is given by mathematical proof. To confirm mathematical conclusion, the simulation analysis is done for multi-sensor CV model. The result demonstrates our theory and verifies the advantage of information fusion system.

Abstract State estimation suffers from some new challenging problems with a multi-platform multi-sensor observation system. An important problem for multisensor integration is that the data from the local sensors needs to be transformed into a common reference frame free of systematic bias or registration. In this study, the relative sensor registration problem is discussed. It aligns measurement from the global sensor with the local sensor under the assumptions that the global sensor is bias free and all biases reside with the local sensor. The traditional methods failed in the condition when attitude bias becomes large because the error caused by linearisation of rotation matrix increases with growing attitude bias. Motivated by this, a two-step method is established. By estimating the measurement bias through augmented extended Kalman filter in local sensor coordinate independent of attitude and location bias, and by introducing the unit quaternion method compute the attitude and location bias, the proposed method can avoid the problem the traditional methods faced. Simulation examples are provided to verify the proposed method by comparing with the existing linear least square algorithm.

Abstract A central ambition of the robotics field has been to increasingly miniaturize such systems, with perhaps the ultimate achievement being the synthetic microbe or cell sized machine. To this end, we have introduced and demonstrated prototypes of what we call colloidal state machines (CSMs) as particulate devices capable of integrating sensing, memory, and energy harvesting as well as other functions onto a single particle. One technique that we have introduced for creating CSMs based on 2D materials such as graphene or monolayer MoS

Abstract Robots have components that work together to accomplish a task. Colloids are particles, usually less than 100 µm, that are small enough that they do not settle out of solution. Colloidal robots are particles capable of functions such as sensing, computation, communication, locomotion and energy management that are all controlled by the particle itself. Their design and synthesis is an emerging area of interdisciplinary research drawing from materials science, colloid science, self-assembly, robophysics and control theory. Many colloidal robot systems approach synthetic versions of biological cells in autonomy and may find ultimate utility in bringing these specialized functions to previously inaccessible locations. This Perspective examines the emerging literature and highlights certain design principles and strategies towards the realization of colloidal robots.

Abstract Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) extremely and rarely metastasize to the skin, and such metastases have not been well characterized.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of clinicopathological data of patients with skin metastasis of a GIST (SM-GIST) admitted to Xiangya Hospital (Changsha, Hunan, China) and literature review were conducted.
Results: Including our 4 cases, a total of 17 cases have been reported to date. The mean age of the patients was 55.4 years (29~70 years) and there was not sex predominance (male 10 and female 7). Primary tumors were often located in the stomach (n=9), duodenum (n=2) and small bowel (n=2). Meanwhile, SM-GIST mainly occurred in head and face (n=6), extremities (n=6), followed by abdomen wall (n=5), back (n=3) and chest (n=2). Mutation analysis revealed that the frequency of wild-type GIST (WT-GIST), exon 9, 11 and 13 mutations was 6, 1, 4 and 1, respectively. The average time to SM-GIST was 4.22 years, specifically 4.59 years in gastric and 3.8 years in non-gastric. Moreover, for the resection only group (including chemotherapy), such average time was 3.63 years, while for the combined group (resection and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs)), it was about 4.74 years. The mean survival was approximately 6.2 years. However, after the diagnosis of SM-GIST, survival was only about 1.69 years.
Conclusion: SM-GIST is a rare malignant condition. Non-gastric GIST, surgery without TKIs, high invasiveness and tumor burden, and molecular subtype (mutation in exon 9, 11 and wild-type) may be conducive to the development of SM-GIST. Additionally, it is also a sign of poor prognosis.

Abstract Objective: Critical patients in intensive care unit (ICU) are highly susceptible to acquiring carbapenem-resistant
Methods: In the 4-month study, we conducted a monthly CRAB screening of the ICU environment prior to disinfection in a Chinese teaching hospital. The ICU underwent routine disinfection procedures twice a day. We collected samples from the environment around the patients before disinfection. Clinical specimens from patients were also screened. The samples obtained were studied for phenotype and homology via antibiotic susceptibility testing, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), and whole-genome sequencing (WGS).
Results: Ten specimens were sampled from ICU environments. Five were obtained in May 2020, and sputums from patient a in bed A at this time were cultured for CRAB isolates; in June 2020 another 5 environmental specimens were obtained from the same bed unit for CRAB, and sputums from patient b in bed A at this time were also cultured for CRAB isolates. Following intensive infection control measures, environmental sampling was negative in July and August. These 18 CRAB isolates all carried
Conclusion: The analysis of cgMLST and SNPs is more accurate for strain homology analysis. Our data confirm that CRAB isolates spread from patient to environment in ICU; however, contact isolation and disinfection measures are effective in avoiding transmission, highlighting the importance of continued education and surveillance of CRAB. WGS could provide rich information on antimicrobial resistance, which is of great value in scientific research and clinical diagnosis.
