    Abstract Laminar graphene oxide (GO) is a promising candidate material for next-generation highly water-permeable membranes. Despite extensive research, there is little information known concerning GO's ion-sieving properties at high acidic/basic pH and temperatures. In this study, the ion-blockage properties of the pristine GO and GO/zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocomposite membranes were tested using a non-pressure-driven filtration setup over a wide range of pH and temperatures. The ZnO nanoparticles within the composite membranes were synthesized via the room-temperature oxidation of zinc acetate and zinc acrylate precursors and were uniformly distributed across the composite membrane. It is observed that partially replacing the zinc acetate precursor with zinc acrylate improves the blockage performance of the composite membranes under extreme basic conditions by 42%. Moreover, photocatalytically-reduced composite membranes blocked copper sulfate ions 28% more than as-prepared composite membranes. Further, it was discovered that the composition of the membrane plays a vital role in its ion blockage performance at higher temperatures.

    Abstract PEGylation is one of the most widely employed strategies to increase the circulatory half-life of proteins and to reduce immune responses. However, conventional PEGylation protocols often require excess reagents and extended reaction times because of their inefficiency. This study demonstrates that a microwave-induced transient heating phenomenon can be exploited to significantly accelerate protein PEGylation and even increase the degree of PEGylation achievable beyond what is possible at room temperature. This can be accomplished under conditions that do not compromise protein integrity. Several PEGylation chemistries and proteins are tested, and mechanistic insight is provided. Under certain conditions, extremely high levels of PEGylation were achieved in a matter of minutes. Moreover, considering the significantly reduced reaction times, the microwave-induced transient heating concept was adapted for continuous flow manufacturing of bioconjugates.

    Abstract Between Species/Between Spaces assembles text and images resulting from a pilot artistic research residency hosted by the Cape Cod Modern House Trust and the Cape Cod National Seashore in Cape Cod, MA. Artists in the book reflect on the geological forces that are reshaping the landscape and ecology of the Outer Cape which illuminate and to some degree mirror the broader global dynamic of instability, loss, and transition we are facing as a result of anthropogenic climate change. The book collects new artworks in a variety of media by ten contemporary artists whose work investigates the relationships between ecological crisis, communities, individual subjects, and the environment - the result of collaborations between visiting artists and researchers at the NPS field station in the National Seashore. An introductory essay by Peter McMahon, founding director of the Cape Cod Modern House Trust, reflects on the Cape as a site of groundbreaking collaborations between artists, architects, designers, and scientists in the middle of the 20th century, led by visionaries Serge Chermayeff, Bernard Rudofsky, Gyorgy Kepes, and Marcel Breuer. An epistolary essay by NPS cartographer Mark Adams, who is also a painter, meditates on the Outer Cape as a site of community with an uncertain future; Adams' own work has indicated that a predicted 4000 year timeframe for the Cape's dunes and sandy shores to erode entirely into the sea may in fact be accelerating under climate change. Contributions by Adams, along with artists Jean Barberis, Joshua Edwards, Marie Lorenz, Nancy Nowacek, Jeff Williams, Lynn Xu, and Marina Zurkow and artist/curators Kendra Sullivan and Dylan Gauthier, who organized the residency and culminating exhibition, present multimodal research into species extinction, terraforming, ecological restoration and regenerative practices, as a window onto the past, present, and future of this unstable place

    Abstract Background and purpose: Clinical research focusing on the effectiveness of exercise therapy (ET) in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) shows increasing interest in the last decade. The aim of this systematic review was to provide an overview of quantitative studies that have examined the impact of ET in AN patients and to examine its specific effects on physical and mental health according to the type of physical exercise (PE) practiced.
    Methods: The review was carried out based on the PRISMA 2020. Electronic databases PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Wiley were searched from inception to December 2021. Quantitative studies assessing the effects of ET interventions on AN patients were included and study quality was assessed using the PEDro scale.
    Results: A total of 27 studies were selected, including 13 randomized controlled trials. Regarding outcomes measured, results showed that aerobic and resistance exercise improved muscle strength, that mind-body PE decreased main symptoms of AN and mental health, and that combined PE reduced dysfunctional exercise and improved weight gain.
    Conclusion: The findings suggest that ET intervention can induce benefits and has no deleterious effects on patients. In addition, specific effects on anorexia symptoms and physical and mental health have been observed according to the type of PE. However, this review reported several methodological weaknesses, including a lack of control group or randomization and statistical misconduct. Finally, ET intervention parameters were heterogeneous, and ET intervention generally lacked details, making reproducibility and comparability difficult. All these limitations underscore the need for a more rigorous methodology for further research.

    Abstract Antigen-binding fragments of antibodies are biotechnologically useful agents for decorating drug delivery systems, for blocking cell-surface receptors in cell culture, for recognizing analytes in biosensors, and potentially as therapeutics. They are typically produced by enzymatic digestion of full antibodies and isolated from the undesirable fragment crystallizable (Fc) by affinity chromatography using Protein-A columns. However, while Protein-A has a strong "classical" interaction with Fc fragments, it can also more weakly bind to an "alternative" site on the heavy chain variable region of antigen-binding fragments. As such, purifying small amounts of antibody fragments by Protein-A chromatography can result in low yield. Moreover, loading larger amounts of antibody fragments onto a Protein-A column can result in poor separation, because of competition of Fc and antigen-binding fragments for immobilized Protein-A. This study demonstrates that Protein-A-based homogeneous scavenging resolves this issue by precisely controlling the stoichiometry of Protein-A to Fc fragments, something that is not possible for conventional flow-type systems, such as affinity chromatography.

    Abstract Introduction: In anesthesia, a medication error would occur every 20 to 133 anesthesia procedures, and 14% is related to a route administration error. To secure neuraxial route, ISO group published a norm in 2016 to develop specific connectors, the "NRFit® connector". The main objective of this work, is to develop a risk mapping related to neuraxial medication errors therefore prepare the NRFit® implementation in anesthesia units in a French Universitary Hospital.
    Methods: Failure modes, effects and criticality analysis (FMECA) methodology was used for our risk mapping which was divided in 3 anesthesia specialities. For each, the analysis was performed for accidental neuraxial administration of intravenous drugs, and its opposite error. Secondly, NRFit® devices were tested for 1 month by 3 experimented anesthetists.
    Results: The majority of reported errors concerns epidural and intrathecal anesthesia, and more frequently in the field of obstetrics. Opioids and tranexamic acid, administered in neuraxial route, are drugs with the highest criticality. The tests were rather conclusive and made it possible to highlight the additional needs in medical devices.
    Discussion: Obstetrics is the riskiest area due to the frequency of epidural anesthesia, the administration of critical drugs in intravenous and neuraxial route. This work increased the awareness of our group, improved the measure of this risk and harmonized practices.
    Conclusion: This work is the first step of the project to prevent administration route error in anesthesia during patient's drug management. The next step will be the NRFit® implementation for epidural and combined spinal-epidural anesthesia in our hospital.
