Abstract Background: Social distancing and 'stay-at-home' orders are essential to contain the coronavirus outbreak; however, it has affected older adults very negatively psychosocially. The present study explored the impact of a videoconferencing-implemented program on older adults' psychosocial health during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: We carried out this experimental research with pretest-posttest and control groups between November 02 to December 26, 2020 on individuals aged 60 years and over who were enrolled at Fethiye Refreshment University (60+ FRU). While the intervention group consisted of 40 people, we recruited 52 participants in the control group. Unlike the control group, the intervention group participated in a structured videoconferencing program held there days a week for 8 weeks. We collected the data using the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPS), the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21), and the Loneliness Scale for Elderly (LSE). The data were then analysed on the SPSS 22.0 program.
Results: The participants had a mean age of 66.13 ± 5.13 years; 65.2% were females, 58.7% were married, 55.4% held a university degree and 93.5% had a regular income. Following the intervention, we found the experimental group to have significantly a lower posttest FCV-19S score (p < 0.05) and a higher posttest MSPS score than the control group (p < 0.05). Besides, the experimental group had significantly lower posttest scores on the DASS-21 and the anxiety and stress subscales than the control group (p < 0.05). Moreover, the posttest score of the experiential group on the emotional loneliness subscale (LSE) was found to be significantly lower than that of the control group (p < 0.05); nevertheless, we could not conclude significant differences between the groups' pretest and posttest LSE scores and their scores on the other LSE subscales (p > 0.05).
Conclusion: Overall, the videoconferencing program was found to be efficient in providing older adults with psychosocial support amid social isolation.

Abstract Purpose: Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most common causative microorganism of ventriculoperitoneal shunt infections. This study aimed to compare linezolid and vancomycin treatments and to examine the effect of these antibiotics alone and combined with hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the amount of bacterial colonies in the experimental S. epidermidis shunt infection model.
Methods: A shunt catheter was placed in the cisterna magna of 49 adult male Wistar albino rats. The rats were randomly divided into seven groups, as follows: sterile control, infected control, vancomycin, linezolid, hyperbaric oxygen, vancomycin + hyperbaric oxygen, linezolid + hyperbaric oxygen. In all groups except the sterile control group, 0.2 ml 10
Results: The number of CSF colonies in the linezolid group was significantly lower than in the vancomycin group (p < 0.05). The number of CSF colonies in the linezolid + HBO group was significantly lower than in the vancomycin + HBO group (p < 0.05).
Conclusions: Linezolid treatment was found to be more effective than vancomycin in ventriculoperitoneal shunt infection caused by S. epidermidis. There was no statistical difference among other treatment groups. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is shown to contribute to the sterilization of cultures.

Abstract This study investigated surface spreading and underground dam recharge methods to replenish groundwater in Turkey's Egri Creek Sub-basin of the Kucuk Menderes River Basin. A three-dimensional numerical model was employed for this purpose. Field and lab data are provided to the model for realistic simulations. Pumping test results were used to determine the aquifer parameters. The laboratory works involved sieve analysis, permeability tests, and porosity and water content prediction. The numerical model's boundary conditions were determined from the geological and hydrogeological characteristics of the study area. Initial conditions were expressed regarding water content and pressure head in the vadose zone. The numerical model was satisfactorily validated by simulating water levels in three different pumping wells in the study area. Seven different scenarios, each having a different pool size, were investigated for the surface spreading recharge method. The results showed that a pool size of 30 × 30 m with a 6-m depth basin was the most optimal choice, raising the groundwater level to about 29.3 m. On the other hand, it was found that an underground dam could raise the levels by an average of 9.5 m, which might not be significant to warrant the construction.

Abstract Breast and ovarian cancers are women's most commonly diagnosed cancers. Seeking an efficient anticarcinogenic compound is still a top priority regarding the aggressiveness of these cancers and the limited benefit of current therapies. Hydroquinidine (HQ) is a natural alkaloid used in arrhythmia and Brugada syndrome. As an ion channel blocker, HQ exhibits its activity by altering ion gradient and membrane potential. Considering the growing evidence of ion channel blockers' antineoplastic potential, we were prompted to test HQ's effect on breast and ovarian cancers. MCF-7 and SKOV-3 cell lines were used to inspect how HQ acts on survival, clonogenicity, migration, tumorigenicity, proliferation, and apoptosis. The molecular basis for the remarkable antiproliferative and proapoptotic effect of HQ in these cells was dissected by proteomics. CDK1, PSMB5, PSMC2, MCM2, MCM7, YWHAH, YWHAQ, and YWHAB proteins in HQ-treated MCF-7 cells, and RRM2, PSMD2, PSME2, COX2, COX4l1, and CDK6 proteins in HQ-treated SKOV-3 cells were found as low-abundant, which was noteworthy. Based on the in-depth analysis, upon HQ treatment, several cell cycle-related processes were found as suppressed, whereas apoptosis and ferroptosis pathways were found to be activated. The observed proteome alteration in cancer cells may provide mechanistic explanations for the growth-limiting effects of HQ at the cellular level.

Abstract General Directorate of Agricultural Enterprises (GDAE), which has been operating since 1994, is a state institution whose aim is to protect the gene resources as well as the production of seeds, breeding and raw materials for agriculture and agriculture-based industry. There are more than 30 agricultural enterprises established for similar purposes in Türkiye. One of these enterprises is Kumkale Agricultural Enterprise (KAE) located within the borders of Çanakkale province. The aim of this study is to reveal the current potentials of KAE lands, for which detailed studies have been made before, to create a database in Geographic Information System (GIS) and to produce various thematic maps. In this study, important soil characteristics such as slope, soil depth, surface stones, drainage, as well as soil series and physiographic units included in the survey report were mapped and the areas covered were calculated in GIS. With the digitization has determined that the agricultural enterprises lands in question are spread over an area of 7309 decares in total. In terms of soil series, the highest distribution area belongs to Karabatak series (948.2 da), while Alluvial soils (3094.8 da) have the highest distribution area in terms of physiographic units. In addition, most of the lands consist of 0-2% slope (4478.9 da), deeper than 120 cm (5936.8 da), stone-free (5677.2 da) and without drainage problems. As a result, it will be useful to examine both the temporal and spatial changes of the lands of GDAE, which has a significant production capacity in Türkiye, to make new field studies and compare them with the old survey studies in terms of guiding future studies.

Abstract Objectives: Retrospective analysis of cases diagnosed with brain death in our hospital in the last 15 years.
Methods: The files and computer records of the cases diagnosed with brain death in the intensive care units of our hospital between January 2008 and January 2023 were evaluated retrospectively. The demographic data of the cases, the primary disease leading to brain death, the complementary tests used in the diagnosis of brain death, the day on which brain death was diagnosed in the intensive care unit, and the donor status were examined.
Results: A total of 228 cases diagnosed as brain death were detected. Seven patients with missing data were excluded from the study. 61.99% of the cases were male, 38.01% were female, 14.02% were under 18 years old, 68.34% were between 18 and 65 years old, 17.64% were over 65 years old. Brain death was diagnosed in 69.69% of the patients admitted to the intensive care unit in the first 7 days, 22.17% in 7-14 days, and 8.14% after 14 days. The primary disease causing brain death was found to be 47% hemorrhagic cerebral injury, 21% traumatic hemorrhagic injury, 18% ischemic cerebral injury, and 14% hypoxic cerebral injury. No ancillary testing was used in 38% of the cases. Carotid doppler ultrasound was used in 36%, computed tomography angiography was used in 22%, and transcranialdoppler was used in 4%. Families agreed to be organ transplant donors in 28.95% of the cases. 71.05% family members refused to be organ transplant donors.
Conclusion: The number of organ donations and the diagnosis of brain death has decreased rapidly with the covid-19 pandemic. In order to increase organ donation, we think that the necessary education should be given at an early age to increase organ donation awareness and social awareness.

Abstract Background: Adenosine triphosphate-binding cassette subfamily A member 3 (ABCA3) gene variants, which cause severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in term newborns, can cause death, especially due to the lack of congenital surfactant protein. The relationship between the types, pathophysiology and effects of ABCA3 gene variants on surfactant metabolism and the clinical phenotype have not yet been fully clarified, but the ABCA3 genotype is known to affect clinical severity.
Case: In our study, in a term newborn with a diagnosis of RDS resulting in death, we detected the c.3677 T > C (p.Leu1226Pro) variant homozygous variant in the ABCA3 gene according to the NM_001089.3 transcript, which, to our knowledge, was identified for the first time in the literature.
Conclusions: We consider that this case report contributes to the literature on RDS by showing the presence of c.3677 T > C (p.Leu1226Pro), a new homozygous variant of ABCA3 in our patient.
