    Abstract Exposure to heavy metals through drinking water can cause significant adverse health effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the concentration, spatial distribution, and assessment of non-carcinogenic risk attributed to exposure to arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in rural areas of eight cities of the West Azerbaijan province of Iran. Eighty-five water samples were taken from randomly selected drinking water wells in the rural areas, and the concentration of the heavy metals was measured by using standard methods. The concentration distribution maps were drawn, and the non-carcinogenic health risks for ingestion and dermal exposure pathways were calculated in four age groups (including infants, children, teenagers, and adults). According to the obtained results, arsenic is considered as the most worrying pollutant among the investigated heavy metals. The maximum measured concentration for arsenic was 371.9 μg/L, which is 37 times the maximum permissible limit. The results of the health risk assessment illustrate that exposure to heavy metals via dermal contact do not pose significant non-carcinogenic risks. However, the calculated non-carcinogenic risks for oral exposure to arsenic were very high and concerning. The highest hazard quotient for oral exposure to arsenic was related to rural of city G (82.64). It is recommended to take the necessary measures as soon as possible regarding the supply of safe drinking water in the studied areas.

    Abstract In this investigation, a phononic crystal-based fiber is proposed for energy harvesting application in metalworking factories. Phononic crystal plays the role of cladding in elastic fiber structure. Each of single-core fibers includes a tungsten hollow cylinder in central region which its internal radius is different in three single-core fibers. Incident waves with central frequency from 25 to 40 kHz of 1/3 octave band are confined in the core region of proposed elastic fibers and transmitted to desired distance. High confinement and transmission ability without significant longitudinal loss make this structure distinct from the other phononic crystals-based energy harvesters. By utilizing of a piezoelectric film at the end of fiber cores, mechanical energy is converted to electrical energy. As proposed elastic fibers confine the applied waves with high quality, the obtained output power is enhanced up to 800 times in comparison with the bare case. Maximum value of extinction ratio between all single core fibers is equal to - 23 dB. Also, longitudinal loss is almost equal to 0.9 dB/km.

    Abstract A concentric cylindrical cloak is showed here to achieve the acoustic cloaking phenomenon. The introduced structure consists of MNE layers and water in MNE substrate in the MHz frequency range. Due to avoiding the incoming acoustic waves by the shell, the object can be hidden inside the cylindrical area of any shape. In order to improve the quality of cloaking, we have optimized the desired shell by considering the manufacturing technology. We show that an optimized, acoustic cloak based on composite lattice structure can reduce the scattering of an object more than a 20-layer realization of acoustic cloak based on multilayer cylindrical structure. This design approach can substantially simplify the fabrication of cloaking shells. In this research, to study the acoustic distribution of the desired structure, finite element method (FEM) has been used to analyze the structure in two dimensions and a cloak of natural materials with isotropic properties has been designed using effective medium theory.

    Abstract Introduction: Endodontic infection is a common problem that can result in tooth loss if not effectively treated. This study focused on investigating the use of rutin-gallium (Ga)(III) complex-mediated antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) for the photoinactivation of Enterococcus faecalis biofilm.
    Methods: The minimum biofilm eradication concentration of the rutin-Ga(III) complex and the minimum biofilm eradication dose of light-emitting diode against E. faecalis were evaluated. The antimicrobial effect of rutin-Ga(III) complex-mediated aPDT against E. faecalis was assessed. Additionally, the expression of genes associated with E. faecalis virulence, such as ace, gelE, and esp, as well as the production of reactive oxygen species within the cells were evaluated.
    Results: The minimum biofilm eradication concentration of the rutin-Ga(III) complex was determined to be 25 μmol/L, whereas the minimum biofilm eradication dose of light-emitting diode irradiation was defined as 5 minutes with an energy density of 300-420 J/cm
    Conclusions: Rutin-Ga(III) complex-mediated aPDT effectively reduces E. faecalis biofilm growth by disrupting biofilm structure and down-regulating virulence genes. These findings highlight the potential of aPDT with the rutin-Ga(III) complex as an adjuvant therapeutic approach against E. faecalis biofilms.

    Abstract In the pursuit of creating more sustainable and resilient structures, the exploration of construction materials and strengthening methodologies is imperative. Traditional methods of relying on steel for strengthening proved to be uneconomical and unsustainable, prompting the investigation of innovative composites. Fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs), known for their lightweight and high-strength properties, gained prominence among structural engineers in the 1980s. This period saw the development of novel approaches, such as near-surface mounted and externally bonded reinforcement, for strengthening of concrete structures using FRPs. In recent decades, additional methods, including surface curvilinearization and external prestressing, have been discovered, demonstrating significant additional benefits. While these techniques have shown the enhanced performance, their full potential remains untapped. This article presents a comprehensive review of current approaches employed in the fortification of reinforced cement concrete structures using FRPs. It concludes by identifying key areas that warrant in-depth research to establish a sustainable methodology for structural strengthening, positioning FRPs as an effective replacement for conventional retrofitting materials. This review aims to contribute to the ongoing discourse on modern structural strengthening strategies, highlight the properties of FRPs, and propose avenues for future research in this dynamic field.

    Abstract Purpose: Acanthamoeba spp. can be found in natural and artificial environments, which reflects their high adaptability to different conditions. Based on the available data, there is scarce information about the isolation of amoeba from milk. This study aimed to investigate the probable presence of Acanthamoeba in milk used for calf feeding.
    Methods: 200 milk samples from 50 industrial and traditional farms were collected. The samples were filtered and cultured on the 1.5% Non-nutrient agar medium. The amoebic growth was examined with an inverted microscope daily. DNA was extracted from the positive plates, and a PCR reaction was undertaken using the primers amplifying the Acanthamoeba 18 S rRNA gene. Five samples were purified and sequenced using specific primers. Maximum likelihood reconstructions were performed using the phylogenetic program MEGA software. The osmo and thermotolerance of isolated trophozoites were examined as well.
    Results: Out of 200 milk samples, Acanthamoeba was isolated from 27 (13.5%). The phylogenetic tree represents that all the isolates belonged to the genotype T4. Results of thermo and osmotolerance tests showed that isolates could develop at 37 and 43 ◦C. Besides, trophozoites survived at 0.5 M mannitol and 1 M.
    Conclusion: For the first time, Acanthamoeba spp. were isolated from milk used to feed dairy calves. Due to Acanthamoeba's neglected role in pathogen persistence and survival, hygiene instructions should be reconsidered.

    Abstract External iliac agenesis is an uncommon congenital issue characterized by the absence or incomplete development of the external iliac artery, a significant blood vessel supplying the lower limbs, potentially causing symptoms like pain, weakness, ischemia, and numbness. We are currently discussing a case of a 23-year-old woman who complained of pain in her left lower limb. A thorough work-up was conducted to rule out ischemia, and during the diagnostic process, a CT scan revealed the complete absence of the right external iliac artery. It can be concluded that this is a rare vascular anomaly that can lead to significant morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis and prompt management are crucial for preventing complications such as limb ischemia and gangrene.

    Abstract In this study, we proposed a biological model explaining the progress of autoimmune activation along different stages of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). For any upcoming stage of SLE, any new component is introduced, when it is added to the model. Particularly, the interaction of mesenchymal stem cells, with the components of the model, is specified in a way that both the inflammatory and anti-inflammatory functions of these cells would be covered. The biological model is then recapitulated to a model with less complexity that explains the main features of the problem. Later, a 7th-order mathematical model for SLE is proposed, based on this simplified model. Finally, the range of validity of the proposed mathematical model was assessed. For this purpose, we simulated the model and analyzed the simulation results in case of some known behaviors of the disease, such as tolerance breach, the appearance of systemic inflammation, development of clinical signs, and occurrence of flares and improvements. The model was able to reproduce these events, qualitatively.
