Abstract Introduction: Intra-articular synovial hemangioma of the knee is a relatively rare benign tumor that if left undiagnosed and treated may be followed by degenerative cartilaginous changes and osteoarthritis. However, the non-specific symptoms of synovial hemangiomas limit its early diagnosis. We report our encounter with synovial hemangioma of the knee in which the diagnosis was based on a > 20-year history of chronic pain without joint swelling or hematoma.
Presentation of case: A 34-year-old man with a localized vascular malformation on the upper edge of the left patella presented with pain and a restricted range of motion. CT and MRI revealed a tumorous lesion at this location. Upon excision of the lesion, the patient's symptoms disappeared, with no recurrence at the 1-year follow-up.
Discussion: Accurate diagnosis and appropriate early treatment are necessary for synovial hemangiomas to forestall articular cartilage degeneration due to recurrent intra-articular hemorrhages.
Conclusion: Synovial hemangioma should be considered when a patient presents with recurrent knee pain, even in the absence of swelling or episodes of joint effusion.

Abstract Antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs) are becoming a promising class of drugs for treating various diseases. Over the past few decades, many modified nucleic acids have been developed for application to ASOs, aiming to enhance their duplex-forming ability toward cognate mRNA and improve their stability against enzymatic degradations. Modulating the sugar conformation of nucleic acids by substituting an electron-withdrawing group at the 2'-position or incorporating a 2',4'-bridging structure is a common approach for enhancing duplex-forming ability. Here, we report on incorporating an N-tert-butylguanidinium group at the 2',4'-bridging structure, which greatly enhances duplex-forming ability because of its interactions with the minor groove. Our results indicated that hydrophobic substituents fitting the grooves of duplexes also have great potential to increase duplex-forming ability.

Abstract Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is now essential in stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) planning for brain tumors because of its excellence in soft-tissue contrast and high spatial resolution. However, MRI distortion is sometimes difficult to recognize, and it may cause large misalignments in radiotherapy planning. In this case report, we will show how much difference in the dose distribution of SRT can be made by using MRI without distortion correction.

Abstract By June 2013, seventeen workers had suffered from intrahepatic or extrahepatic bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) in an offset proof-printing company in Osaka and nine of the workers had died. Ages at diagnosis were 25 to 45 years old. Known risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma were not found in the patients. All of the patients were exposed to 1,2-dichloropropane at high level for long-term and were diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma 7 to 20 years after the first exposure. Twelve of the patients were also exposed to dichloromethane. The Japan Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare recognized the cancer to be an occupational disease.
