Abstract Fluorescent Molecular Tomography (FMT) is a highly sensitive and noninvasive imaging method that provides three-dimensional distribution of biomarkers by noninvasive detection of fluorescent marker probes. However, due to the light scattering effect and ill-posedness of inverse problems, it is challenging to develop an efficient construction method that can provide the exact location and morphology of the fluorescence distribution. In this paper, we proposed L

Abstract L-theanine (N-ethyl-γ-glutamine) is the main amino acid in tea leaves. It not only contributes to tea flavor but also possesses several health benefits. Compared with its sedative and calming activities, the immunomodulatory effects of L-theanine have received less attention. Clinical and epidemiological studies have shown that L-theanine reduces immunosuppression caused by strenuous exercise and prevents colds and influenza by improving immunity. Numerous cell and animal studies have proven that theanine plays an immunoregulatory role in inflammation, nerve damage, the intestinal tract, and tumors by regulating γδT lymphocyte function, glutathione (GSH) synthesis, and the secretion of cytokines and neurotransmitters. In addition, theanine can be used as an immunomodulator in animal production. This article reviews the research progress of L-theanine on immunoregulation and related mechanisms, as well as its application in poultry and animal husbandry. It is hoped that this work will be beneficial to future related research.

Abstract In livestock species, the enterocytes of the small intestine are responsible for the synthesis of citrulline and arginine from glutamine and proline. At present, little is known about de novo synthesis of citrulline and arginine in horses. To test the hypothesis that horses of different age groups can utilize glutamine and proline for the de novo synthesis of citrulline and arginine, jejunal enterocytes from 19 horses of three different age groups: neonates (n = 4; 7.54 ± 2.36 d of age), adults (n = 9; 6.4 ± 0.35 yr), and aged (n = 6; 22.9 ± 1.0 yr) with healthy gastrointestinal tracts were used in the present study. Enterocytes were isolated from the jejunum and incubated at 37 °C for 30 min in oxygenated (95% O2/5% CO2) Krebs bicarbonate buffer (pH 7.4) containing 5 mM D-glucose and 0 mM, 2-mM L-[U-14C]glutamine, or 2 mM L-[U-14C]proline plus 2 mM L-glutamine. Concentrations of arginine, citrulline, and ornithine in cells plus medium were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography. Results indicate that the rate of oxidation of glutamine to CO2 was high in enterocytes from neonatal horses, but low in cells from adult and aged horses. Enterocytes from all age groups of horses did not degrade proline into CO2. Regardless of age, equine enterocytes formed ornithine from glutamine and proline, but failed to convert ornithine into citrulline and arginine. Because arginine is an essential substrate for the synthesis of not only proteins, but also nitrogenous metabolites (e.g., nitric oxide, polyamines, and creatine), our novel findings have important implications for the nutrition, performance, and health of horses.

Abstract The increasing incidence of metabolic diseases, including obesity and diabetes, is a serious social public problem. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find effective prevention and treatment measures for these diseases. DsbA-L is a protein that is widely expressed in many tissues and is closely related to metabolism. Emerging evidence shows that DsbA-L plays an important role in antioxidative stress, promoting the synthesis and secretion of adiponectin and maintaining mitochondrial homeostasis, and the abnormalities of these functions are also closely related to the occurrence and development of metabolic diseases. Here, we reviewed the tissue expression patterns and regulatory factors of DsbA-L, summarized its biological functions and the current research progress of DsbA-L in metabolic diseases, and found that DsbA-L may be a promising target for metabolic diseases.

Abstract Sixteen previously undescribed steroidal sapogenins along with two known ones were isolated from the stems of Solanum nigrum L. (Solanaceae). Their structures were identified using a combination of 1D and 2D NMR, HR-ESI-MS spectroscopy, the Mosher method, and X-ray diffraction analysis. Compounds 1-8 have an unusual F ring and 9-12 have a derived A ring, both of which are rare skeletons found in natural products. The biological evaluation showed that the isolated steroids exhibited inhibition of nitric oxide in the LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages with IC

Abstract Background and objective: Fluorescence molecular tomography (FMT) is a non-invasive molecular imaging modality that can be used to observe the three-dimensional distribution of fluorescent probes in vivo. FMT is a promising imaging technique in clinical and preclinical research that has attracted significant attention. Numerous regularization based reconstruction algorithms have been proposed. Results: Various numerical simulations and in vivo bead-implanted mouse experiments were conducted to verify the performance of the proposed method. The experimental results show that the DCATL1 algorithm is more robust than the state-of-the-art approaches and achieves better source localization and morphology recovery.
Conclusions: The in vivo experiments showed that DCATL1 can be used to visualize the distribution of fluorescent probes inside biological tissues and promote preclinical application in small animals, demonstrating the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.
