Abstract Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA), incidental findings on computed tomography scans, have raised concerns due to their association with worse clinical outcomes. Our meta-analysis, which included studies up to April 2023 from PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library, aimed to clarify the impact of ILA on mortality, lung cancer development, and complications from lung cancer treatments. Risk ratios (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated for outcomes. Analyzing 10 studies on ILA prognosis and 9 on cancer treatment complications, we found that ILA significantly increases the risk of overall mortality (RR 2.62, 95% CI 1.94-3.54; I

Abstract Background: This study investigated the outcomes of biventricular repair using right ventricle to pulmonary artery (RV-PA) conduit placement in patients aged <1 year.
Methods: Patients aged <1 year who underwent biventricular repair using an RV-PA conduit between 2011 and 2020 were included in this study. The outcomes of interest were death from any cause, conduit reintervention, and conduit dysfunction (peak velocity of ≥3.5 m/sec or moderate or severe regurgitation).
Results: In total, 141 patients were enrolled. The median age at initial conduit implantation was 6 months. The median conduit diameter z-score was 1.3. The overall 5-year survival rate was 89.6%. In the multivariable analysis, younger age (p=0.006) and longer cardiopulmonary bypass time (p=0.001) were risk factors for overall mortality. During follow-up, 61 patients required conduit reintervention, and conduit dysfunction occurred in 68 patients. The 5-year freedom from conduit reintervention and dysfunction rates were 52.9% and 45.9%, respectively. In the multivariable analysis, a smaller conduit z-score (p<0.001) was a shared risk factor for both conduit reintervention and dysfunction. Analysis of variance demonstrated a nonlinear relationship between the conduit z-score and conduit reintervention or dysfunction. The hazard ratio was lowest in patients with a conduit z-score of 1.3 for reintervention and a conduit z-score of 1.4 for dysfunction.
Conclusion: RV-PA conduit placement can be safely performed in infants. A significant number of patients required conduit reintervention and had conduit dysfunction. A slightly oversized conduit with a z-score of 1.3 may reduce the risk of conduit reintervention or dysfunction.

Abstract Limited by flammability, wood and wood-based materials face challenges in distinguishing themselves as structural materials or finishing materials. Once burning, they can produce toxic gases detrimental to humans and the environment. Therefore, it is critical to make clear whether fire-retardant wood construction materials are insusceptible to fire and not the sources of toxic gases. This study aimed to evaluate flame-retardant plywood from the aspects of flammability and the toxic gas and smoke generation during combustion. The flame-retardant plywood was manufactured by impregnating a flame-retardant resin in line with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards. The research results indicate that seven out of the eight kinds of toxic gases listed by the IMO, other than CO, were not detected during the combustion of the flame-retardant plywood. While CO was detected, its quantities under three test conditions are below the corresponding thresholds. Therefore, unlike synthetic resin products, flame-retardant plywood is a promising finishing material that can reduce the damage from toxic gases in the event of a fire. In the smoke generation tests, the mass reduction rate of flame-retardant plywood increased from 13% to 18% and then to 20% as the test condition became more severe. Under the same circumstances, the average maximum specific optical density also followed an upward trend, whose values (75.70, 81.00, and 191.20), however, still met the IMO standard of below 200. This reflects that the flame-retardant plywood is competent as a finishing material. Further, flammability was evaluated, and the critical flux at extinguishment (CFE), total heat release (Qt), and peak heat release rate (Qp) were determined to be 49.5 kW/m

Abstract This study aimed to explore the predictors of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in women who have recently experienced sexual assault, by examining psychological and neurophysiological factors using a prospective design with resting-state electroencephalogram (EEG) functional connectivity. The study enrolled 33 women who had been recently traumatized by sexual assault and conducted assessments within a month of the trauma. These survivors were evaluated for PTSD three months later and were classified into two groups: PTSD positive (n = 12) and PTSD negative (n = 21). They were compared to two control groups comprising women who had not experienced any extremely traumatic events: 25 with depression and 25 healthy controls. The evaluation focused on resting-state EEG functional connectivity within default mode network (DMN) using small-worldness (SW), based on graph theory. We also assessed self-reported levels of depression, anxiety, anger, and executive functions. The findings indicated that survivors who developed PTSD three months post-trauma exhibited higher anxiety levels and reduced DMN SW in the beta 3 frequency, compared to those who did not develop PTSD. Contrary to expectations, survivors without PTSD showed decreased executive functioning and lower prefrontal centrality compared to those with PTSD. This study underscores the importance of early assessment and intervention for sexual assault survivors at risk of developing PTSD.

Abstract Bioinformatics education can be defined as the teaching and learning of how to use software tools, along with mathematical and statistical analysis, to solve biological problems. Although many resources are available, most students still struggle to understand even the simplest sequence alignment algorithms. Applying visualizations to these topics benefits both lecturers and students. Unfortunately, educational software for visualizing step-bystep processes in the user experience of sequence alignment algorithms is rare. In this article, an educational visualization tool for biological sequence alignment is presented, and the source code is released in order to encourage the collaborative power of open-source software, with the expectation of further contributions from the community in the future. Two different modules are integrated to enable a student to investigate the characteristics of alignment algorithms.

Abstract In this study, we present initial efforts for a new speech recognition approach aimed at producing different input images for convolutional neural network (CNN)-based speech recognition. We explored the potential of the tympanic membrane (eardrum)-inspired viscoelastic membrane-type diaphragms to deliver audio visualization images using a cross-recurrence plot (CRP). These images were formed by the two phase-shifted vibration responses of viscoelastic diaphragms. We expect this technique to replace the fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectrum currently used for speech recognition. Herein, we report that the new creation method of color images enabled by combining two phase-shifted vibration responses of viscoelastic diaphragms with CRP shows a lower computation burden and a promising potential alternative way to STFT (conventional spectrogram) when the image resolution (pixel size) is below critical resolution.

Abstract Although microplastic (MP) pollution in farmland increased, the effect of MPs on plant growth was not clearly explained. Therefore, the object of the study was to evaluate the effect of polypropylene microplastics (PP-MPs) on plant germination, growth, and nutrient uptake under hydroponic conditions. The effect of PP-MPs on seed germination, shoot and root length, and nutrient uptake were assessed using tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme) seeds grown in half-strength Hoagland solution. The results showed that PP-MPs did not significantly affect seed germination, but positively affected the shoot and root elongation. In cherry tomato, the root elongation was significantly increased by 34%. Microplastics also affected nutrient uptake by plants, however, the effect varied depending on elements and plant species. The Cu concentration was substantially increased in tomato shoot while it decreased in cherry tomato root. Nitrogen uptake decreased in MP treated plants compared to the control and phosphorus uptake was significantly decreased in the shoot of cherry tomato. However, the root-to-shoot translocation rate of most macro nutrients decreased following exposure to PP-MPs indicating that long-term exposure to MPs may lead to a nutritional imbalance in plants.
