Abstract Understanding land structure change and stability in the process of oasisization is particularly important for the desertification control in sandy land. Based on land use data of eight periods from 1980 to 2020, we extracted the spatial distribution information of oasis land in Mu Us Sandy Land, and analyzed the spatio-temporal variations of land transformation patterns and stability of oasis land with overlay analysis and grid analysis. The results showed that desertification in the Mu Us Sandy Land had reversed, with a significant process of oasis. The area of forest and grassland increased from 10.2% in 1980 to 73.7% in 2020, while the area of oasisization land increased from 32500 km

Abstract The soft rock in Mu Us Sandy Land has rich resources and high content of clay minerals. The combination of soft rock with sand can play a certain role in sand fixation and promote the green development of ecological environment. In this paper, the aeolian sandy soil in Mu Us Sandy was taken as the research object, and it was mixed with soft rock to form composite soil. The four volume ratios of soft rock to sand were respectively 0:1, 1:5, 1:2 and 1:1. And CK, P1, P2 and P3 were used to represent the above four volume ratios in turn. By means of quantitative fluorescent PCR and high throughput sequencing, 16S rRNA gene abundance and community structure were investigated. The results showed that the soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) contents in 0-30cm soil layer were higher. Compared with CK, the SOC of P2 was improved by 112.77% and that of P1 was 88.67%. The content of available phosphorus (AP) and available potassium (AK) was higher in 30-60cm soil layer, and P3 was more effective. The abundance of 16S rRNA gene in the mixed soil bacteria ranged from 0.03×109 to 0.21×109 copies g-1 dry soil, which was consistent with the changes of nutrients. Under different soil layers, the three dominant bacteria in the mixed soil were the same, namely Phylum Actinobacteriota, Phylum Proteobacteria and Phylum Chloroflexi, and there were more unique genera in each soil layer. Both bacteria ɑ and β diversity showed that the community structure of P1 and P3 in 0-30cm soil layers was similar, and that of P1 and P2 in 30-60cm soil layers was similar. AK, SOC, AN (ammonium nitrogen), TN and NN (nitrate nitrogen) were the main factors contributing to the differentiation of microbial community structure under different compound ratios and soil layers, and Phylum Actinobacteria has the largest correlation with nutrients. The results showed that the soft rock could improve the quality of sandy soil, and that the growth of microbial growth was dependent on the soil physicochemical characteristics. The results of this study will be helpful to the study of the microscopical theory for the control of the wind-blown sand and the ecology of the desert.

Abstract The Mu Us Desert is an ideal location to study environmental changes during the Late Quaternary, because of its unique characteristics. The Abaoyan (ABY) profile, a typical aeolian-lacustrine profile located at the eastern edge of the desert, was investigated in this study. A basic chronological framework was established based on a combination of radiocarbon dating by accelerator mass spectrometry and in situ sedimentary phase identification. Furthermore, changes in regional chemical weathering intensity since the Holocene were evaluated through comprehensive analysis of the collected samples in terms of grain size, loss on ignition (LOI), chromaticity, geochemical element contents, and soil micromorphology. The results showed that the ABY profile was under the influence of primary and moderate chemical weathering. Regional paleoclimatic environmental changes could be divided into four stages. During Stage I (before 12.6 ka BP; pre-Holocene), the ABY profile was dominated by aeolian sand, showing a coarse average grain size, low LOI, and high chromaticity values, which may have indicated a dry and cold period. During Stage II (12.6-10.3 ka BP; early Holocene), the ABY profile was dominated by lacustrine sediments, indicating a shallow lake water environment with strong chemical weathering and a warm and humid climate. During Stage III (10.3-4.2 ka BP), the profile was dominated by sandy peat deposits with a relatively large proportion of clay particles suggesting that the intensity of chemical weathering was relatively strong in the region during this period and the climate was mainly warm and humid. During Stage IV (after 4.2 ka BP), the sediment was dominated by aeolian sand and secondary loess, the chromaticity increased, the LOI reduced, and the regional chemical weathering intensity was weaker. The change in chemical weathering intensity in this region was inferred to be a positive response to the Holocene East Asian monsoon circulation.

Abstract The nature of semantic representation has long been a key question in linguistic research. The Embodied Cognition theory challenges the traditional view of language representation, stating that semantic information stems from the sensory-motor cortex, which is activated automatically during semantic processing. However, most of the evidence comes from monolingual studies; it remains unclear whether second-language (L2) comprehension involves different semantic representations or mirrors the pattern seen in first-language (L1) processing. Therefore, the present study investigated the role of the sensory-motor system in language processing via making Electroencephalography (EEG) recordings during the processing of L1 and L2 action verbs. The results showed that L1 (Chinese) action verbs generated higher mu-event-related desynchronization (ERD) than L1 abstract verbs in the early processing stage (250 ms after verb presentation), and the same phenomenon was also observed for L2 (English). The results also indicated that language modulated the processing of action verbs, with L1 action verbs eliciting stronger ERD than L2 action verbs. These results demonstrate that the sensory-motor cortex plays a crucial role in comprehending both L1 and L2 action verbs.

Abstract Background: Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are a superfamily of multifunctional enzymes in living organisms with metabolic and detoxification functions, which can detoxify exogenous and endogenous compounds and thereby reduce the damage caused by toxic substances to the body. Ticks are obligate blood-sucking ectoparasites that can transmit various pathogens, and the characterization of tick-derived GSTs may help improve current understanding of the molecular mechanism of tick resistance to insecticides. In this study, a novel GST gene, named HrGSTm1, was identified from Hyalomma rufipes.
Methods: Sequence analysis was performed by using bioinformatics techniques. A prokaryotic expression system was used to obtain the recombinant expression protein rHrGSTm1. Detection of spatiotemporal expression patterns of target genes and their response to the toxicity of cyhalothrin on female H. rufipes was performed by using a quantitative PCR platform. The optimal enzymological parameters of rHrGSTm1 using glutathione as substrate were calculated. The antioxidant capacity of the recombinant protein was evaluated by DPPH• (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical 2,2-Diphenyl-1-(2,4,6-trinitrophenyl) hydrazyl). Knockdown of the HrGSTm1 genes through RNA interference was used to analyze their effects on the physiological parameters of ticks. The changes in HrGSTm1 messenger RNA expression patterns under cypermethrin stress were analyzed.
Results: The complementary DNA sequence of HrGSTm1 contained a 672-bp open reading frame, which potentially encoded 223 amino acids. The predicted molecular weight was 25.62 kDa, and the isoelectric point 8.22. HrGSTm1 is a Mu-class GST, belonging to the cytoplasmic GSTs with no signal peptide observed. The V
Conclusions: In this study, a novel GST of the Mu-class was successfully isolated from H. rufipes and systematically subjected to bioinformatic analysis and recombination identification. The variation trend of HrGSTm1 expression level in different tissues suggests that the gene has different detoxification functions in different tissues. The potential function of this gene was analyzed to provide basic research for further investigation of its detoxification mechanism.

Abstract: ... power on practical active RIS for multiuser multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication system ...

Abstract Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) have been proposed as a revolutionary technology with the potential to address several critical requirements of 6G communication systems. Despite its powerful ability for radio environment reconfiguration, the ``double fading'' effect constricts the practical system performance enhancements due to the significant path loss. A new active RIS architecture has been recently proposed to overcome this challenge. However, existing active RIS studies rely on an ideal amplification model without considering the practical hardware limitation of amplifiers, which may cause performance degradation using such inaccurate active RIS modeling. Motivated by this fact, in this paper we first investigate the amplification principle of typical active RIS and propose a more accurate amplification model based on amplifier hardware characteristics. Then, based on the new amplification model, we propose a novel joint transmit beamforming and RIS reflection beamforming design considering the incident signal power on practical active RIS for multiuser multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication system. Fractional programming (FP), majorization minimization (MM) and block coordinate descent (BCD) methods are used to solve for the complex problem. Simulation results indicate the importance of the consideration of practical amplifier hardware characteristics in the joint beamforming designs and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm compared to other benchmarks.

    Optimal Structure and Explicit Duality

Abstract: ... multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) downlink systems. To overcome the need for symbol-level IE precoding ...

Abstract This paper investigates block-level interference exploitation (IE) precoding for multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) downlink systems. To overcome the need for symbol-level IE precoding to frequently update the precoding matrix, we propose to jointly optimize all the precoders or transmit signals within a transmission block. The resultant precoders only need to be updated once per block, and while not necessarily constant over all the symbol slots, we refer to the technique as block-level slot-variant IE precoding. Through a careful examination of the optimal structure and the explicit duality inherent in block-level power minimization (PM) and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) balancing (SB) problems, we discover that the joint optimization can be decomposed into subproblems with smaller variable sizes. As a step further, we propose block-level slot-invariant IE precoding by adding a structural constraint on the slot-variant IE precoding to maintain a constant precoder throughout the block. A novel linear precoder for IE is further presented, and we prove that the proposed slot-variant and slot-invariant IE precoding share an identical solution when the number of symbol slots does not exceed the number of users. Numerical simulations demonstrate that the proposed precoders achieve a significant complexity reduction compared against benchmark schemes, without sacrificing performance.

Abstract It has been previously observed that training Variational Recurrent Autoencoders (VRAE) for text generation suffers from serious uninformative latent variables problem. The model would collapse into a plain language model that totally ignore the latent variables and can only generate repeating and dull samples. In this paper, we explore the reason behind this issue and propose an effective regularizer based approach to address it. The proposed method directly injects extra constraints on the posteriors of latent variables into the learning process of VRAE, which can flexibly and stably control the trade-off between the KL term and the reconstruction term, making the model learn dense and meaningful latent representations. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms several strong baselines and can make the model learn interpretable latent variables and generate diverse meaningful sentences. Furthermore, the proposed method can perform well without using other strategies, such as KL annealing.
