Abstract Diatom-bacteria interactions evolved during more than 200 million years of coexistence in the same environment. In this time frame, they established complex and heterogeneous cohorts and consortia, creating networks of multiple cell-to-cell mutualistic or antagonistic interactions for nutrient exchanges, communication, and defence. The most diffused type of interaction between diatoms and bacteria is based on a win-win relationship in which bacteria benefit from the organic matter and nutrients released by diatoms, while these last rely on bacteria for the supply of nutrients they are not able to produce, such as vitamins and nitrogen. Despite the importance of diatom-bacteria interactions in the evolutionary history of diatoms, especially in structuring the marine food web and controlling algal blooms, the molecular mechanisms underlying them remain poorly studied. This review aims to present a comprehensive report on diatom-bacteria interactions, illustrating the different interplays described until now and the chemical cues involved in the communication and exchange between the two groups of organisms. We also discuss the potential biotechnological applications of molecules and processes involved in those fascinating marine microbial networks and provide information on novel approaches to unveiling the molecular mechanisms underlying diatom-bacteria interactions.

Abstract Prostaglandins (Pgs) are eicosanoid lipid mediators detected in all vertebrates, in some marine invertebrates, macroalgae and in diatoms, a class of eukaryotic microalgae composing the phytoplankton. The enzymes involved in the Pgs pathway were found to be differentially expressed in two strains of the diatom Skeletonema marinoi, named FE7 and FE60, already known to produce different levels of oxylipins, a class of secondary metabolites involved in the defence of diatoms against copepod predation, with FE7 being higher producer than FE60. In the present study we investigated the response of genes involved in the production of oxylipins and Pgs, evaluating their expression after the exposure to the copepod Temora stylifera. Our results highlighted a grazer feeding preference for FE60, the strain having low oxylipins content and reduced expression of Pgs enzymes, and an impact on the gene expression of the enzymes involved in oxylipins (i.e. lipoxygenase) and Pgs (i.e. cyclooxygenase) biosynthesis, especially in FE7. A time course evaluation of the gene expression over 24 h showed an upregulation of the essential enzyme in the Pgs pathway, the cyclooxygenase, in FE60 after 6 h of exposure to the grazer, differently from FE7 where no upregulation of gene expression in the presence of copepods was revealed. These results provide preliminary indications regarding the existence of a complex involvement of the Pgs pathway in the prey-predator interaction that requires further investigations.

Abstract Objectives: Mental health services utilization decreased dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic. For persons who are highly vulnerable and at risk of health and social care exclusion, restrictions negatively affected the accessibility to treatments and their mental conditions.
Methods: All psychiatric and psychological interviews carried out at National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty (INMP) Italy from January 2018 to February 2022 were included in the study. To measure services use, an interrupted time-series analysis using March 2020 as the starting data of COVID-19 pandemic period was considered, and first visits vs follow-up session numbered.
Results: A significant decrease was observed in March 2020 due to the lockdown restrictive measures (p<0.001). Later on, the number of psychological interventions significantly increased (p<0.05), whereas the increment of the psychiatric interventions was not significant. By the end of February 2022 the number of visits returned to pre-COVID-19 levels, although recovery was slower than expected, especially for psychiatric visits.
Conclusions: After a dramatic drop during the lockdown, access to mental health out-patient clinics slowly returned to pre-pandemic levels in the next two years. Considering that mental health needs have increased during the pandemic, mental health services should improve their efforts to reduce barriers of access and to implement outreach referral.

Abstract Aims: To evaluate the frequency of the InSTIs mutations in a large cohort of HIV-infected people.
Background: The Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART) allows turning HIV infection from a fatal disease to chronic infection, and Integrase Strand Transfer Inhibitors (InSTIs) represent the cornerstone of this treatment. However, the spread of HIV-1 drug resistance mutations represents an emerging threat to the long-term success of HIV treatment programs.
Objectives: To evaluate the trend of the HIV drug resistance to InSTIs in a large cohort of HIVpositive people in order to assess the risk represented by these subjects in the spread of the HIV infection to the community.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted analysing all the InSTIs resistance tests performed in HIV positive subjects during 2017-2019 by the HIV Laboratory of the University Hospital "Gaetano Martino" of Messina, Italy.
Results: In 2017-2019, 252 InSTIs resistance tests were performed, with 59 (23.4%), 88 (34.9%), and 105 (41.7%) tests respectively in the three considered years. Overall, 28 (11.1%) samples showed resistance to at least one of the four InSTIs. We observed a significant percentage increase of 95% in the resistance to all four drugs.
Conclusion: InSTI resistance is not rare. Therefore, continuous surveillance along with incessant health education and a wide offer of the HIV test, can be the most important tools in the fight against HIV infection.

Abstract Purpose: Recent studies pointed out the importance to distinguish orthorexia nervosa (ON) from non-problematic forms of interest with healthy eating. This distinction needs to be further explored since it may favor a better comprehension of the relationship between orthorexic behaviors and psychopathology and lead to an improved understanding of the psychological processes implicated in ON. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the associations between ON and the core features of eating disorders (EDs), psychopathological symptoms and defense mechanisms, by differentiating three groups of individuals: an ON symptoms group, a healthy-eating control group, and a normal-eating control group.
    Methods: College students (n = 270, M
Results: Compared to the control groups, the ON symptoms group reported greater EDs' features, higher psychopathological symptoms and greater employment of different neurotic and immature defense mechanisms. No differences were found between groups with regard to obsessive-compulsive symptoms.
Conclusion: Our findings support the notion that ON behaviors should be carefully distinguished from non-problematic forms of interest with healthy eating. Indeed, results suggest that ON individuals are characterized by similar clinical features and defensive functioning as those observed in traditional EDs, indicating the importance of deepening our understanding of the relationship between these conditions.

Abstract Background: Covid-19 pandemic represented a unique stressful event that affected the physical health and the psychological well-being (PWB) of individuals and communities. Monitoring PWB is essential to clarify the burden on mental health effects but also to define targeted psychological-supporting measures. This cross-sectional study evaluated the PWB of Italian firefighters during the pandemic.
Methods: Firefighters recruited during the pandemic period filled out a self-administered questionnaire the Psychological General Well-Being Index during the health surveillance medical examination. This tool is usually used to assess the global PWB and explores six subdomains: anxiety, depressed mood, positive well-being, self-control, general health, and vitality. The influencing role of age, gender, working activities, Covid-19 and pandemic restrictive measures was also explored.
Results: A total of 742 firefighters completed the survey. The aggregate median PWB global score was in the "no distress" range (94.3±10.3) resulting higher than that observed in studies conducted using the same tool in the Italian general population during the same pandemic period. Similar findings were observed in the specific subdomains thus suggesting that investigated population was in good PWB condition. Interestingly, significantly better outcomes were detected in the younger firefighters.
Conclusion: Our data showed a satisfactory PWB situation in firefighters that could be related to different professional factors such as work organization, mental and physical training. In particular, our results would suggest the hypothesis that in firefighters, the maintaining of a minimum/moderate level of physical activity (consisting of even just going to work) might had a profoundly positive impact on psychological health and well-being.

Abstract Purpose: Orthorexia nervosa (OrNe) is a potentially pathological condition characterized by a fixation on healthy diet. An increasing number of studies have been conducted on this mental preoccupation, but the validity and reliability of some of the psychometric instruments employed in its assessment are still under debate. Among these measures, the Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS) seems to be promising, given that it allows to differentiate between OrNe and other non-problematic forms of interest with healthy eating, named as healthy orthorexia (HeOr). The aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of an Italian version of the TOS, by testing its factorial structure, internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and validity.
Method: Through an online survey, we recruited 782 participants from different regions of Italy, asking them to complete the following self-report instruments: TOS, EHQ, EDI-3, OCI-R, and BSI-18. From the initial sample, 144 participants agreed to complete a second TOS administration 2 weeks later.
Results: Data confirmed the validity of the 2-correlated factors structure of the TOS. The questionnaire also showed good reliability, both in terms of internal consistency and temporal stability. With regard to the TOS validity, results showed that OrNe was significantly and positively associated with measures of psychopathology and psychological distress, while HeOr showed no correlations or negative associations with the above-mentioned measures.
Conclusion: Based on these results, the TOS can be considered a promising measure for the assessment of both pathological and non-problematic forms of orthorexic eating behavior also in Italian population.
Level of evidence: Level V, descriptive cross-sectional study.
