Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to review the chapters related to orthopedic surgery in Dr. Orhan Abdi (Kurtaran)'s book Ameliyât-ı Cerrâhiye [Operative Surgery] published in 1913 and to examine Orhan Abdi Bey's biography to explore the roots of orthopedic education in Turkey through Orhan Abdi Bey's tenure in university.
Methods: Dr. Orhan Abdi Bey's biography and tenure in medical school were reviewed. Chapters related to orthopedic surgery in Ameliyât-ı Cerrâhiye were scanned and compared to practices of the present-day. Sections of the book were translated to provide examples of its content.
Results: Dr. Orhan Abdi Bey received surgical training, consisting mainly of orthopedic surgery and taught the first systematic orthopedic surgery classes in the medical school where he worked for 28 years before being dismissed with the 1933 University Reform. Topics related to orthopedic surgery in Ameliyât-ı Cerrâhiye was classified under three headings; amputations and disarticulations, arthrotomies, and bone and tendon operations. Surgical techniques, including corrective osteotomies, tenoplasties, and tendon transfers, were explained in detail and many are still in use today.
Conclusion: It is possible to obtain information about the orthopedic practices of the period by investigating the scientific studies of the physicians of the same period. Orhan Abdi Kurtaran and his book Ameliyât-ı Cerrâhiye have contributed to the training of many physicians for many years and many of the orthopedic interventions described in the book are still in use today.

Abstract •The number of Covid-19 pandemic cases per million has significant negative effects on global financial markets.•The adverse effects of the coronavirus on the stock markets are less in freer countries. In other words, the stock markets of less-free countries are affected more by the same size of increase in the number of coronavirus cases.•For every increase in the growth of number of Covid-19 cases per million, the stock market returns in freer countries are associated with less return decreases.•Even though the growth of the number of Covid-19 cases per million increases the volatility in less-free countries, its effect on freer countries is not statistically different from zero.

Abstract Recent studies have been analyzing and measuring the efficacy of the use of financial incentives to increase the Covid-19 vaccine uptake. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the only study available in the literature that aims to measure the effect of financial incentives on vaccine rates among children. This paper explores the effects of a specific financial incentive on parents' vaccination decisions for their children. Using data from a regional practice, where students aged 12 and older received $50 gift cards per Covid-19 vaccination dose, we use various methodologies (synthetic control, linear regression, and difference-in-differences) to approximate the effects of financial incentives on vaccine rates. Our analysis reveals that gift cards increase vaccination rates by 2.64-4.23 percentage points from a baseline rate of 38 percent, concluding that financial incentives, in conjunction with other incentives and policies, can be considered to increase the rate of vaccines for 12- to 17-year-olds.

Abstract This chapter mentions some other groundbreaking innovations and technological improvements that came along after the crisis. The recent attempts at creating digital currencies, famously known as cryptocurrencies, and their corresponding platform blockchain were some of these. How and why did they emerge? What do their inventions imply for our future? And why are they important? Sharing economy and memberships (as opposed to ownerships) are other examples of profound changes. Increasing use of shared goods, services like Uber and Airbnb, and the unstoppable trend of membership services like e-newspapers, e-libraries, and music streaming points to one conclusion: the end of the idea of ownership. On the governmental side, we have been observing an increasing inclination toward authoritarian states. Liberalism seems to have failed. People have been losing their trust in economic regimes. My argument in this chapter is that without the 2008 crisis, there would have never been these developments and innovations.

Abstract If a permanent pacemaker lead is misplaced in the left ventricle (LV), the lead may interfere with normal functioning of the heart leading various complications, including heart rhythm problems and blood clots. In our case, the LV lead that passed through the patent foramen ovale and was misplaced into the LV was detected in a 78-year-old patient who presented with embolic stroke. Thrombus regression was achieved with anticoagulation, and then the lead extraction was planned. The lead extraction is a priority in acute cases; but it is not the primary approach in long-term leads that were misplaced into the LV. A patient-based individual approach should be preferred in such cases.
