Abstract Emperor Wu (, Wudi) of the Xianbei-led Northern Zhou dynasty, named Yuwen Yong (, 543-578 CE), was a highly influential emperor who reformed the system of regional troops, pacified the Turks, and unified the northern part of the country. His genetic profile and physical characteristics, including his appearance and potential diseases, have garnered significant interest from the academic community and the public. In this study, we have successfully generated a 0.343×-coverage genome of Wudi with 1,011,419 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on the 1240k panel. By analyzing pigmentation-relevant SNPs and conducting cranial CT-based facial reconstruction, we have determined that Wudi possessed a typical East or Northeast Asian appearance. Furthermore, pathogenic SNPs suggest Wudi faced an increased susceptibility to certain diseases, such as stroke. Wudi shared the closest genetic relationship with ancient Khitan and Heishui Mohe samples and modern Daur and Mongolian populations but also showed additional affinity with Yellow River (YR) farmers. We estimated that Wudi derived 61% of his ancestry from ancient Northeast Asians (ANAs) and nearly one-third from YR farmer-related groups. This can likely be attributed to continuous intermarriage between Xianbei royal families, and local Han aristocrats.

Abstract Objective: Based on intra-set correlation analysis, this paper deconstructs the clinical medical records of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) Master ZHOU Zhongying in treating thyroid cancer, and analyzes the experience in “mechanism-syndrome-medicine-prescription” for thyroid cancer. Methods: Through Medcase data processing platform, based on Frequent Pattern (FP)-Growth enhanced correlation analysis algorithm, the medical records of Professor ZHOU Zhongying for the treatment of thyroid cancer from June 1, 2001 to February 28, 2015 were analyzed within the set. Results: This study involved 43 medical records, 43 patients, and 167 visits. After processing intra-set correlations, 28 groups of highly correlated symptoms, 21 groups of highly correlated tongue images, 10 groups of highly correlated pulse conditions, 28 groups of highly correlated pathogenesis, 34 groups of highly correlated herbs, and 26 groups of highly correlated western medicine diagnosis were selected. Professor ZHOU Zhongying treats thyroid cancer according to syndrome differentiation. Symptoms with more association rules included neck swelling, neck pain, cough, and dry mouth; tongue images with more association rules included dark purple tongue, dark red tongue, and fissured tongue; pulse conditions with more association rules were wiry pulse, thready pulse, small pulse, and slippery pulse; the pathogenesis with more association rules was phlegm and blood stasis, damp-heat accumulation, and impairment of both Qi and Yin; herbs with more association rules were Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Zeqi (Sun Euphoribiae Herb), and Tiandong (Asparagi Radix); western medicine diagnosis with more association rules included thyroid cancer, insomnia, and chronic gastritis. Conclusion: Thyroid cancer mostly presents as deficiency in origin and excess in manifestations. The basic pathogenesis is phlegm and blood stasis, damp-heat accumulation, and impairment of both Qi and Yin, which are closely related to liver, kidney, and spleen. Professor ZHOU Zhongying ...

Abstract The production and circulation of bronzes among the regional states of the Western Zhou Dynasty are an important way of understanding the political and ritual systems of the dynasty. This paper studies the production and circulation of bronzes from three points of view: the cultural background, techniques, and raw materials of bronzes. First, the authors classified the bronzes excavated from the Zhouyuan Site, Yejiashan Cemetery, the Cemetery of the Lords of Jin, and Yu State Cemetery based on shapes and techniques. On this basis, a trace element analysis and lead isotope analysis were conducted to investigate the quality of the raw materials. The three aspects used for classification—cultural background, technologies and raw materials—complement each other during the discussion of the issues of interest. The authors conclude that high-quality bronzes from Ji-surnamed regional states represented by those excavated from Yejiashan Cemetery and the Cemetery of the Lords of Jin show consistency with Zhouyuan bronzes in the royal court in terms of raw materials, shapes, and techniques, therefore indicating their origin from unified workshops. However, low-quality bronzes produced in these places, and also bronzes from non-Ji-surnamed regional states, represented by those excavated in Yu State and Peng State, possess unique shape and technique characteristics, and included different copper materials and partly the same lead materials, reflecting the degree of independence that regional states enjoyed in terms of bronze production. The imperial court uniformly made high-quality bronzes, and distributed them to all regional states, while the regional states independently produced some low-quality bronzes; this system probably came into being during the early Western Zhou Dynasty. However, from the middle period of the Western Zhou Dynasty, some regional states increased their independence in the production of bronzes, and the distribution system of the imperial court began to collapse gradually.
