Abstract Several high-resolution proxy environmental records have been obtained for the last 35 kyr from ODP Hole 658C, a well-studied site ca. 200 km off Cap Blanc, NW Africa. The collective assessment based on the marine proxies (UK'37 SST, contents of TOC and chlorins, Upwelling Radiolarian Index and the percentage of Florisphaera profunda), surprisingly indicates that the last glacial maximum (LGM) was characterized by warmer sea surface temperature (SST), weaker upwelling, and lower marine productivity, compared with the preceding older glacial and subsequent deglaciation periods. Of the terrigenous proxies, the mean grain size of the non-carbonate fraction and the terrigenous alkane content indicate that wind strength and aridity were high. The weaker upwelling at the 658 site during the LGM may have resulted from changes in the strength and direction of the wind systems and/or shifts in the position and geometry of the upwelling cell.

Abstract The global prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) has been an environmental menace. Tons of drug wastes from antiretroviral therapy are released into the environment annually. We, for the first time, employed the novel dielectric barrier atmospheric non-thermal plasma (DBANP) discharge, to mitigate the inadvertent pollution arising from the antiretroviral therapy. A 40-min treatment of nevirapine achieved >94 % (0.075 min

Abstract Organic electrosynthesis in aqueous media is presently hampered by the poor solubility of many organic reactants and thus low purity of liquid products in electrolytes. Using the electrooxidation of benzyl alcohol (BA) as a model reaction, we present a "sandwich-type" organic-solid-water (OSW) system, consisting of BA organic phase, KOH aqueous electrolyte, and porous anodes with Janus-like superwettability. The system allows independent diffusion of BA molecules from the organic phase to electrocatalytic active sites, enabling efficient electrooxidation of high-concentration BA to benzaldehyde (97% Faradaic efficiency at ~180 mA cm

Abstract Phytoremediation is widely considered as a cost-effective method for managing heavy metal soil pollution. Leersia hexandra Swartz shows a promising potential for the remediation of heavy metals pollution, including chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni). It is vital to understand the physiological and biochemical responses of L. hexandra to Ni stress to elucidate the mechanisms underlying Ni tolerance and accumulation. Here, we examined the metabolic and transcriptomic responses of L. hexandra exposed to 40 mg/L Ni for 24 h and 14 d. After 24-h Ni stress, gene expression of glutathione metabolic cycle (GSTF1, GSTU1 and MDAR4) and superoxide dismutase (SODCC2) was significantly increased in plant leaves. Furthermore, after 14-d Ni stress, the ascorbate peroxidase (APX7), superoxide dismutase (SODCP and SOD1), and catalase (CAT) gene expression was significantly upregulated, but that of glutathione metabolic cycle (EMB2360, GSTU1, GSTU6, GSH2, GPX6, and MDAR2) was downregulated. After 24-h Ni stress, the differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) were mainly flavonoids (45%) and flavones (20%). However, after 14-d Ni stress, the DEMs were mainly carbohydrates and their derivatives (34%), amino acids and derivatives (15%), and organic acids and derivatives (8%). Results suggest that L. hexandra adopt distinct time-dependent antioxidant and metal detoxification strategies likely associated with intracellular reduction-oxidation balance. Novel insights into the molecular mechanisms responsible for Ni tolerance in plants are presented.
