    Abstract The autonomic nervous system (ANS) functioning has been proposed as a relevant method to characterize the therapeutic needs of intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetrators. Nevertheless, research has neglected the influence of the ANS on socio-affective functions in this population. The aim of the present study was to analyze the psychophysiological activity of IPV perpetrators (n = 52) compared to controls (n = 46) following an empathic induction task, performed through negative emotion-eliciting videos. We employed two general ANS markers (heart rate [HR] and respiratory rate [RR]), two sympathetic-related indexes (pre-ejection period [PEP] and skin conductance level [SCL]) and a parasympathetic biomarker (respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA]). Additionally, we explored the impact of psychophysiological activity on prosocial behavior using Hare's donation procedure. Compared to controls, IPV perpetrators reported lower HR and SCL following the task, as well as longer PEP, suggesting an attenuated sympathetic response to others' distress. No differences in the RSA response pattern were found, however, IPV perpetrators displayed lower overall RSA levels throughout the protocol, indicative of reduced parasympathetic activity. Besides, while no differences in prosocial performance were observed, greater sympathetic responses and overall parasympathetic activity predicted increased donations across the sample. Thus, a high sympathetic and parasympathetic activity might influence the occurrence of prosocial behavior. The present study provides further evidence supporting that IPV perpetrators cope differently with others' negative emotions. In line with this biopsychosocial perspective, insights are gained on the emotional processing of IPV perpetrators which, in turn, could contribute to improve IPV psychotherapeutic programs.

    Abstract Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful technique for studying the interaction at electrode/solution interfaces. The adoption of EIS for obtaining analytical signals in biosensors based on aptamers is gaining popularity because of its advantageous characteristics for molecular recognition. Neuropeptide Y (NPY), the most abundant neuropeptide in the body, plays a crucial role with its stress-relieving properties. Quantitative measurement of NPY is imperative for understanding its role in these and other biological processes. Although aptamer-modified electrodes for NPY detection using EIS present a promising alternative, the correlation between the data obtained and the adsorption process on the electrodes is not fully understood. Various studies utilize the change in charge transfer resistance when employing an active redox label. In contrast, label-free measurement relies on changes in capacitance.     Abstract Fungal infections of the central nervous system (FI-CNS) are a problematic and important medical challenge considering that those most affected are immunocompromised. Individuals with systemic cryptococcosis (67-84%), candidiasis (3-64%), blastomycosis (40%), coccidioidomycosis (25%), histoplasmosis (5-20%), mucormycosis (12%), and aspergillosis (4-6%) are highly susceptible to develop CNS involvement, which often results in high mortality (15-100%) depending on the mycosis and the affected immunosuppressed population. Current antifungal drugs are limited, prone to resistance, present host toxicity, and show reduced brain penetration, making FI-CNS very difficult to treat. Given these limitations and the rise in FI-CNS, there is a need for innovative strategies for therapeutic development and treatments to manage FI-CNS in at-risk populations. Here, we discuss standards of care, antifungal drug candidates, and novel molecular targets in the blood-brain barrier, which is a protective structure that regulates movement of particles in and out of the brain, to prevent and combat FI-CNS.

    Abstract Fungal infections are a serious problem affecting many people worldwide, creating critical economic and medical consequences. Fungi are ubiquitous and can cause invasive diseases in individuals mostly living in developing countries or with weakened immune systems, and antifungal drugs currently available have important limitations in tolerability and efficacy. In an effort to counteract the high morbidity and mortality rates associated with invasive fungal infections, various approaches are being utilized to discover and develop new antifungal agents. This review discusses the challenges posed by fungal infections, outlines different methods for developing antifungal drugs and reports on the status of drugs currently in clinical trials, which offer hope for combating this serious global problem.

    Abstract The labour market effects of automation have gained significant attention from scholars and policymakers. Concerns about negative effects are important in emerging countries, where a rapid acceleration of robot adoption and an increasing involvement in global value chains have been observed in recent years, with the subsequent increase in exposure to foreign competition. This paper estimates the effect of local and foreign robots on labour market outcomes and labour shares using a panel dataset composed of 16 sectors and ten emerging countries from 2008 to 2014. The endogeneity of robots' adoption is addressed with an instrumental variables approach and using a shift‐share index of exposure to foreign robots. The main results for all sectors show that foreign robot adoption has negatively affected employment in emerging countries. When exploring sectoral heterogeneity, we find that the foreign robots' negative effect on employment has occurred in many sectors, being more prominent in those with higher exposure to foreign robots. Moreover, we found small and negative inter‐sectoral spillover effects of local robots on employment and wages. Finally, the results also show that the labour share is affected in some sectors of emerging countries by both the use of local and foreign robots.

    Abstract Expression of the Escherichia coli tnaCAB operon, responsible for L-tryptophan (L-Trp) transport and catabolism, is regulated by L-Trp-directed translation arrest and the ribosome arresting peptide TnaC. The function of TnaC relies on conserved residues distributed throughout the peptide, which are involved in forming an L-Trp binding site at the ribosome exit tunnel and inhibiting the ribosome function. We aimed to understand whether nonconserved amino acids surrounding these critical conserved residues play a functional role in TnaC-mediated ribosome arrest. We have isolated two intragenic suppressor mutations that restore arrest function of TnaC mutants; one of these mutations is located near the L-Trp binding site, while the other mutation is located near the ribosome active site. We used reporter gene fusions to show that both suppressor mutations have similar effects on TnaC mutants at the conserved residues involved in forming a free L-Trp binding site. However, they diverge in suppressing loss-of-function mutations in a conserved TnaC residue at the ribosome active site. With ribosome toeprinting assays, we determined that both suppressor mutations generate TnaC peptides, which are highly sensitive to L-Trp. Puromycin-challenge assays with isolated arrested ribosomes indicate that both TnaC suppressor mutants are resistant to peptidyl-tRNA cleavage by puromycin in the presence of L-Trp; however, they differ in their resistance to puromycin in the absence of L-Trp. We propose that the TnaC peptide two functionally distinct segments, a sensor domain and a stalling domain, and that the functional versatility of these domains is fine-tuned by the nature of their surrounding nonconserved residues.
