Abstract Green huajiao has a unique flavor and is widely used in cooking as an edible spice. In this study, the intensity of overall aroma and aroma attributes of seven green huajiao samples from the Sichuan and Chongqing regions were evaluated using a dynamic dilution olfactometer and ranking descriptive analysis (RDA) technology. The volatile compounds and major aroma components were determined by GC-MS in combination with odor activity value (OAV) analysis. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model was further used to identify the key aromas contributing to the aroma sensory attributes. Seven green huajiao samples were categorized into three groups: (1) huajiao samples from Liangshan have a strong intensity of pungent, floral and herbal aromas and a medium-high intensity of sweet aroma, and the key contributing aroma compounds were α-pinene, sabinene, β-pinene, myrcene, ocimene and linalool; (2) huajiao samples from Panzhihua and Hongya have a strong intensity of citrusy, lemony and minty aromas, and the key contributing aroma compound was linalool; and (3) the huajiao sample from the Chongqing region was categorized into a separate group and was characterized by a medium-high intensity of green, minty and sweet aromas, and the main aroma compounds are ocimene, citronellal and α-terpineol. These results provide useful basic data for evaluating the aroma quality and analyzing the key aroma characteristics of green huajiao in the Sichuan and Chongqing regions.

Abstract To preserve the nutrients while maximizing the value of black waxy corn, beverage is the most promising manufacturing product. However, the poor stability and bland flavor profile are significant issues limiting its popularization. This study, firstly profiled the anthocyanidins of black waxy corn and the effects of α-amylase and amyloglucosidase treatments on the anthocyanidin levels, color properties, and flavor qualities were systematically studied. A total of 5 anthocyanidins and 11 anthocyanins were identified. The concentration of cyanidin, petunidin, peonidin, pelargonidin, and malvidin in liquefied liquids (YHY) and saccharified liquids (THY) were significantly increased by 55.46% and 56.62% after α-amylase and amyloglucosidase treatments. The enzymatic hydrolysis was found to enrich the volatile profile. The relative odor activity value and multivariate statistical analyses further suggested isoamyl acetate, benzaldehyde, 2-nonenal, 2,4-decadienal, dodecanal, 2-buten-1-one, 3-buten-2-one, and dimethyl trisulfide as key odorants to discriminate black waxy corn beverages produced by α-amylase or amyloglucosidase.

Abstract Rotundic acid, the principal bioactive constituent of the herbal remedy "Jiubiying", has been considered as a candidate compound for treating non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, the in vivo and in vitro metabolism of rotundic acid has remained unclear. With the aim of elucidating its metabolic profile, a reliable approach that used ultra-high performance liquid chromatography combined with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS) was applied for screening and identifying rotundic acid in vivo (plasma, feces, urine, and liver tissue of normal and NAFLD model rats) and in vitro (rat liver microsomes) metabolites. Herein, 26 metabolites of rotundic acid were identified, including 22 metabolites in normal rats, 20 metabolites in NAFLD model rats, and eight metabolites in rat liver microsomes. Among them, 17 metabolites were identified for the first time. These data illustrate that the pathological status of NAFLD affects the metabolism of rotundic acid. Furthermore, the major pathways of metabolism included phase Ⅰ (demethylation, desaturation, etc.) and phase Ⅱ (sulfation and glucuronidation) reactions, as well as a combined multiple-step metabolism. This work provides important information on the metabolism of rotundic acid and lays the foundation for its future clinical application.

Abstract This study aimed to investigate the effect of universal adhesive and silane pretreatment on the bond durability of metal brackets to dental glass ceramics. Eighty lithium disilicate glass ceramic specimens were randomly assigned to one of four groups (n = 20) defined by the pretreatment and adhesive used: (i) Adper Single Bond 2; (ii) silane + Adper Single Bond 2; (iii) Single Bond Universal; and (iv) silane +Single Bond Universal. Maxillary central incisor metal brackets were bonded on the ceramic surfaces with resin composite. A shear bond strength test was conducted after 24 h of water storage and after 10,000 thermocycles. Adhesive remnant index scoring and field-emission scanning electron microscopy were performed to determine adhesives remaining on the ceramic surfaces and the ceramic ultrastructure following bracket debonding, respectively. After 10,000 thermocycles, specimens treated with Single Bond Universal preserved an appropriate bond strength between brackets and glass ceramics and showed minimum ceramic surface damage following bracket debonding, which was not the case in the other three groups. The application of a silane-containing universal adhesive without silane pretreatment achieves adequate durability of the bond of metal brackets to dental glass ceramics and allows safe debonding, which may aid in optimizing the effectiveness for orthodontic treatment.

Abstract Herein, we developed a facile integrated Mycoplasma pneumoniae diagnosis platform by combining amino-modified silica membrane (AMSM)-based nucleic acids fast extraction and enrichment with colorimetric isothermal amplification detection. AMSM demonstrates a strong ability to capture and enrich nucleic acids in complicated biological matrices, and the purified AMSM/nucleic acids composite could be directly used to perform isothermal amplification including denaturation bubble-mediated strand exchange amplification (SEA) and loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) reactions. Through comparing clinical specimens, excellent performance of AMSM-based SEA assay with 93.33% sensitivity and 100% specificity relative to real-time PCR was observed, and for AMSM-based LAMP was 96.67% and 100%, respectively. The diagnostic procedure could be completed within 55 min, and the colorimetric-based visual result further alleviates the use of sophisticated equipment. The proposed approach possesses great potential as a simple and time-saving alternative for point-of-care testing (POCT) of M. pneumoniae in resource-limited regions.

Abstract Several randomized trials comparing self-gripping mesh with polypropylene (PL) mesh in Lichtenstein hernioplasty revealed that the self-gripping mesh significantly reduced the operation time. In these studies, some enrolled only male patients, and in others, the proportion of women was extremely low. The aim of this research was to compare outcomes after self-gripping mesh repair with PL mesh secured with sutures in female Lichtenstein hernioplasty. Female patients with primary unilateral inguinal hernia were assigned randomly to undergo Lichtenstein hernioplasty with a self-gripping ProGrip (PG) mesh or a sutured PL mesh, followed-up at one week, one month, three months, one year, and two years. Demographics, hernia characteristics, and operative outcomes data were analyzed. Pain was assessed with a visual analog scale (0-10), and quality of life (QOL) was estimated by a 36-item short-form general survey (0-26). Forty eight patients in the PG group and 51 participants in the PL group completed the follow-up. The operation time of the PG (54.1 ± 12 minutes) group was significantly shorter than that of the PL (60.9 ± 11.3 minutes) group (
