Abstract To cope with the emissions permit trading program, industrial firms have to change production decisions, which may affect their pollution discharge, labor demand, and workers’ wage earnings. Using a time-varying difference-in-differences framework together with robustness checks, this research explores the impacts of the SO2 emissions trading scheme (SETS) on SO2 emissions, employment, and wages of industrial firms in China. It was noted that the program resulted in a remarkable decline not only in SO2 emissions but also in labor demands and wages. The mechanism analyses further show that emissions reduction is mainly driven by fossil energy input decrease rather than by desulfurization technology. The negative effects of employment and wages are driven by the negative output effect and insufficient technology rather than by the environmental substitute effect. Our findings contribute to the improvement of the market-oriented environmental permit trading program and development of regulated firms in developing countries.

Abstract Red mud is a solid waste containing valuable components, such as aluminum and iron. This paper aims to recover aluminum and iron from red mud by acid leaching and prepare polyaluminum ferric sulfate (PAFS) to apply for the turbidity reduction treatment of coal slurry water. The behaviors of leaching, polymerizing, and coagulation were analyzed by leaching thermodynamics and advanced micro-detection methods. More than 90% of aluminum and 60% of iron in red mud were dissolved into the leaching solution by using 50% sulfuric acid (v/v) with 7 mL/g at 100 °C for 2 h, where the crystal lattice of cancrinite was significantly destroyed to promote the dissolution of aluminum. The low polymerization (Al + Fe)

Abstract There are about 270,000 gullies over 500 meters in length on the Loess Plateau, and the average soil water content in the gullies is nearly three times that of the slope surface of the Loess Plateau. In the crisscrossed gullies on the Loess Plateau, there are very rich reserve resources of cultivated land and potential for increasing grain production. How to manage channel ecologically and make full use of channel resources is a problem that needs to be paid attention to. This study puts forward five factors affecting gully governance, and pays more attention to the systematization, integrality and coordination of protection, governance and utilization, which can provide reference standards for more comprehensive and accurate implementation of gully governance and land construction projects, and provide technical support for promoting economic development, ecological environment improvement and new rural construction in western China and old revolutionary base areas. It is conducive to ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin.

Abstract Purpose: Homocysteine (Hcy) is recognized as a risk factor for stroke. Our study examined the relationship between plasma Hcy levels and stroke, along with its subtypes, among Chinese patients who experienced an acute stroke episode.
Patients and methods: We retrospectively enrolled patients with acute stroke and age- and sex-matched healthy controls admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University from October 2021 to September 2022. Ischemic stroke subtypes were classified using the modified TOAST criteria. Multivariate logistic regression models were employed to probe the associations of plasma Hcy levels with total stroke, ischemic stroke and its subtypes, and hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH), and the correlation between plasma Hcy levels and the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS).
Results: The mean age of the total group was 63 years, with women representing 30.6% (246 individuals). Elevated Hcy levels were significantly associated with total stroke (OR 1.054, 95% CI: 1.038-1.070), HICH (OR 1.040, 95% CI: 1.020-1.060), ischemic stroke (OR 1.049, 95% CI: 1.034-1.065), and the TOAST subtypes of ischemic stroke in large-artery atherosclerosis (LAA) (OR 1.044, 95% CI: 1.028-1.062) and small-artery occlusion (SAO) (OR 1.035, 95% CI: 1.018-1.052), but not with cardioembolic (CE) stroke. Moreover, only in the case of SAO stroke were the Hcy levels positively correlated with the NIHSS score (B=0.030, 95% CI: 0.003-0.056, P=0.030).
Conclusion: Plasma Hcy levels were found to be positively correlated with the risk of stroke, particularly in the context of LAA, SAO stroke, and HICH. Additionally, Hcy levels demonstrated a positive correlation with stroke severity in patients presenting with SAO stroke. These findings suggest potential clinical implications in stroke prevention, particularly for ischemic stroke (LAA, SAO subtypes) and HICH by employing homocysteine-lowering therapies. Future investigations are warranted to fully elucidate these associations.
