    Abstract Apple detection in complex orchard environments holds significant research importance for yield estimation. Although convolutional neural networks have been widely used in the field of object detection, they also have certain limitations. One of the major drawbacks is their inductive biases of locality and scale invariance, which often pose challenges in capturing global and long-term dependencies. In this work, we replace the backbone network with a moving window transformer based on Faster RCNN, fusing features from different stages and introducing an enhanced smoothing loss function called Faster RFormer. We created an apple detection dataset called AD-2023 to validate the reliability of the model. The results indicate that the proposed method in this paper achieved impressive results with 0.692 mAP, 0.796 AP@0.75 and 0.941 AP@0.5, surpassing existing algorithms. More importantly, our study not only provides a reliable idea for the inadequacy of convolutional neural networks for detection tasks in complex environments, but also establishes a new benchmark in apple detection methodologies, showcasing the potential for broader applications in agricultural automation and robotics.

    Abstract In this paper, a novel transistor based on a hybrid conduction mechanism of band-to-band tunneling and drift-diffusion is proposed and investigated with the aid of TCAD tools. Besides the on and off states, the proposed device presents an additional intermediate state between the on and off states. Based on the tri-state behavior of the proposed TDFET (tunneling and drift-diffusion field-effect transistor), a ternary inverter is designed and its operation principle is studied in detail. It was found that this device achieves ternary logic with only two components, and its structure is simple. In addition, the influence of the supply voltage and the key device parameters are also investigated.

    Abstract Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) by methanotrophic bacteria has been shown to play an important role in maintaining fertility. However, this process is still limited to aerobic methane oxidation with sufficient oxygen. It has remained unknown whether and how methanotrophic BNF proceeds in hypoxic environments. Herein, we incubated paddy soils with a ferrihydrite-containing mineral salt medium to enrich methanotrophic bacteria in the presence of methane (20%, v/v) under oxygen constraints (0.27%, v/v). The resulting microcosms showed that ferrihydrite-dependent aerobic methane oxidation significantly contributed (81%) to total BNF, increasing the
