    Abstract This study aimed to differentiate between middle and high school students by investigating the structural relationships between academic self-efficacy, academic stress, learning motivation, and learning strategies-the learning-related factors of South Korean adolescents' learning achievements. We obtained relevant information for 4051 middle school students and 4242 high school students from the Gyeonggi Institute of Education's three-year panel data study (2016-2018). The results showed direct and indirect influential relationships between academic self-efficacy, academic stress, learning motivation, and learning strategy. Results of the analysis conducted by separating the structural equation model into middle and high school student groups showed that both models met the goodness-of-fit indices criteria; the difference between middle and high school student group models was significant. Hence, to promote academic achievement among middle and high school students, differential assistance is needed. Middle school students should be assisted so that they have a good command of learning strategy after reducing academic stress by increasing academic self-efficacy. For high school students, management of academic stress by increasing academic self-efficacy is the most important aspect.

    Abstract Introduction: The formation and function of the corpus luteum (CL) increase the likelihood of pregnancy and efficiently manage implantation. Apoptosis must occur at an appropriate time in the formation of the CL. This also affects its function. However, it is still unclear if the type of apoptosis affects the function.
    Material and methods: We conducted morphological analysis of the CL collected on day 15 between the middle and late oestrous phases of Yorkshire pigs and mini-pigs, and measured the difference in hormone expression and apoptosis using an immunoassay method and messenger RNA level.
    Results: The CL cells were more uniform in the Yorkshire pigs than in the mini-pigs, and the composition of the CL was also fuller. The expression of luteinising hormone was higher in the Yorkshire pigs. Apoptosis and the rate of action of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) were different between the two pig types. Expression of MMPs was higher in the Yorkshire pigs than in the mini-pigs. However, the expression of caspase 3 and 20alpha-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, a progesterone inhibitor, was potentiated in the mini-pigs.
    Conclusion: Autophagy throughout the CL was more extensive in the Yorkshire pigs than in the mini-pigs, suggesting that autophagy and cell reorganisation by MMPs were highly correlated. The occurrence of autophagy in the formation and function of the CL may affect the action of hormones and expression of cell reconstitution factors.

    Abstract An increased life span and accompanying nutritional affluency have led to a rapid increase in diseases associated with aging, such as obesity and type 2 diabetes, imposing a tremendous economic and health burden on society. Pancreatic β-cells are crucial for controlling glucose homeostasis by properly producing and secreting the glucose-lowering hormone insulin, and the dysfunction of β-cells determines the outcomes for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. As the native structure of insulin is formed within the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), ER homeostasis should be appropriately maintained to allow for the proper metabolic homeostasis and functioning of β-cells. Recent studies have found that cellular senescence is critically linked with cellular stresses, including ER stress, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial stress. These studies implied that β-cell senescence is caused by ER stress and other cellular stresses and contributes to β-cells’ dysfunction and the impairment of glucose homeostasis. This review documents and discusses the current understanding of cellular senescence, β-cell function, ER stress, its associated signaling mechanism (unfolded protein response), and the effect of ER stress on β-cell senescence and dysfunction.

    Abstract Background: It is uncommon to perform liver transplantation for patients with end-stage liver disease having tracheostomy. Usually, the tracheostomy cannula is changed to an oral endotracheal tube (ETT) before operation because ETT is easy to handle during operation. If routine oral ETT insertion is difficult, we should seek other solutions.
    Case description: We report a successful conversion from tracheostomy tube to ETT in a patient with subglottic stenosis. The patient was an 8-month-old infant who was scheduled for living donor liver transplantation due to acute hepatic failure. The original plan was to convert the tracheostomy tube to oral ETT, which failed due to aggravation of subglottic stenosis. An otolaryngologist performed balloon dilatation surgery, and ETT was successfully intubated. Owing to a multidisciplinary approach, the surgery was successfully performed without fatal adverse events, and the patient was later discharged with a tracheostomy.
    Conclusions: It is unusual for pediatric patients with tracheostomy tubes to undergo major surgeries like liver transplantation. We hope that this case of successful anesthetic management based on a multidisciplinary approach suggests new ideas to anesthesiologists seeking safe anesthesia.

    Abstract The most common complaint in people with single-sided deafness (SSD) is difficulty in understanding speech in a noisy environment. Moreover, the neural mechanism of speech-in-noise (SiN) perception in SSD individuals is still poorly understood. In this study, we measured the cortical activity in SSD participants during a SiN task to compare with a speech-in-quiet (SiQ) task. Dipole source analysis revealed left hemispheric dominance in both left- and right-sided SSD group. Contrary to SiN listening, this hemispheric difference was not found during SiQ listening in either group. In addition, cortical activation in the right-sided SSD individuals was independent of the location of sound whereas activation sites in the left-sided SSD group were altered by the sound location. Examining the neural-behavioral relationship revealed that N1 activation is associated with the duration of deafness and the SiN perception ability of individuals with SSD. Our findings indicate that SiN listening is processed differently in the brains of left and right SSD individuals.

    Abstract Objectives: Despite the advantages of robotic technology, single-site robotic myomectomy (SSRM) without an accessory instrument is limited by a restricted range of motion, weaker suturing of a thick myometrium, and non-articulating instruments. We present our novel gradual turning out method (GTOM) of SSRM and our assessment of its feasibility and safety by comparing its perioperative outcomes with those of two-port laparoscopic myomectomy (LM).
    Design: A retrospective cohort case-control study was carried out.
    Methods: This study included consecutive 46 patients who underwent SSRM for intramural myomas larger than 7 cm, from 2016 to 2019. Subsequently, 46 patients who underwent LM were selected by 1:1 propensity score matching by controlling for age, body mass index, myoma number, myoma diameter, and the presence of sexual intercourse. The perioperative outcomes of the two groups were compared using a Mann-Whitney U test and Fisher's exact test. The effect of covariates on operation time was analyzed using univariable and multivariable linear regression.
    Results: SSRM was performed successfully with GTOM for myomas of up to 14 cm in the longest diameter, without conversion to laparotomy and intraoperative injuries. No differences between the groups were found in length of hospital stay, estimated blood loss, hemoglobin level decrease, transfusion rate, and postoperative pain, but operative time was significantly longer in the SSRM group than in the LM group (p < 0.001). Larger myomas, location of the lower segment, and the operation method of SSRM were significantly associated with a longer operation time. Whereas operation time for myomas located at the anterior wall, singleton myomas, and myomas <10 cm was significantly longer in the SSRM group than in the LM group, that for myomas at the posterior or lateral side of the uterus, multiple myomas, and myomas ≥10 cm did not differ significantly between the groups, indicating the advantage of SSRM for difficult myomectomy.
    Limitations: Retrospective nature of the study and limitation to a single-center study are the limitations of the study.
    Conclusions: Despite the lack of an accessory instrument, SSRM using the GOTM was feasible and safe as it yielded similar perioperative outcomes to those of LM.

    Abstract Background: Many studies have examined the perception of musical emotion using excerpts from familiar music that includes highly expressed emotions to classify emotional choices. However, using familiar music to study musical emotions in people with acquired hearing loss could produce ambiguous results as to whether the emotional perception is due to previous experiences or listening to the current musical stimuli. To overcome this limitation, we developed new musical stimuli to study emotional perception without the effects of episodic memory.
    Methods: A musician was instructed to compose five melodies with evenly distributed pitches around 1 kHz. The melodies were created to express the emotions of
    Results: Twenty-four selected musical features produced classification for intended emotions with an accuracy of 76%. The results of the online survey in the normal hearing (NH) group showed that the intended emotions were selected significantly more often than the others. K-means clustering analysis revealed that melodies with arousal and valence ratings corresponded to representative quadrants of interest. Additionally, the applicability of the stimuli was tested in 4 individuals with high-frequency hearing loss.
    Conclusion: By applying the individuals with NH, the musical stimuli were shown to classify emotions with high accuracy, as expressed. These results confirm that the set of musical stimuli can be used to study the perceived emotion in music, demonstrating the validity of the musical stimuli, independent of innate musical bias such as due to episodic memory. Furthermore, musical stimuli could be helpful for further studying perceived musical emotion in people with hearing loss because of the controlled pitch for each emotion.
