Abstract Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) boasts excellent thermal energy storage capabilities but lacks efficiency in thermal conductivity and solar absorption. Simultaneously, the escalating concern surrounding the substantial volume of discarded cotton fabric underscores environmental issues. In this study, we devised composite phase change materials (PCMs) by embedding PEG into a carbon cotton material (CCM), varying PEG content from 50 to 80%, and conducted a comprehensive analysis of their thermal properties and solar-to-thermal conversion. The CCM, crafted from a waste 100% cotton towel through carbonization, provided an optimal porous structure that accommodated a significant 70% PEG content without any leakage, thanks to interactions such as surface tension, capillary forces, and interfacial hydrogen bonds. These PEG/CCM composites exhibited impressive crystallization fractions (>92%), resulting in notable thermal energy storage capacities ranging from 85.3 to 143.2 J/g as the PEG content increased from 50 to 80%. Moreover, these composites showed high thermal stability and exceptional cycling durability even after 500 melting/crystallization cycles. Notably, their thermal conductivities markedly increased to a range of 0.46-0.85 W/m·K compared to pure PEG's modest 0.24 W/m·K. Furthermore, the PEG/CCM composites substantially augmented visible and near-infrared (VIS-NIR) light absorption. Evaluation of solar-to-thermal conversion illustrated the composite's ability to efficiently convert solar energy into thermal energy, storing and subsequently releasing it through melting and crystallization processes. This study introduces a novel class of composite PCMs characterized by cost-effectiveness, outstanding thermal performance, and impressive solar-to-thermal conversion capabilities. These composite PCMs hold significant promise for large-scale solar-to-thermal energy storage applications while contributing to the sustainability of cotton waste management.

Abstract Accidental fish bone ingestion is a common manifestation at emergency departments. In most cases, ingested foreign bodies usually pass uneventfully through the gastrointestinal tract and complications only present in less than 5% of all patients. In this report, we present the first documented case of pulmonary artery injury due to a fish bone in a 63-year-old male patient hospitalized with hemoptysis after accidentally swallowing a fish bone 30 days ago. This patient subsequently had surgery and endoscopy to safely remove the foreign body and then recovered well on a follow-up examination. For cases of fish bone ingestion, contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography is one of the most essential tools to assess vascular problems and associated mediastinal infections-risk factors for life-threatening and long-term recurrent inflammation. Reconstructing planes along the foreign body axis and changing windows when analyzing CT scans is necessary to avoid missing lesions and dilemmas.

Abstract Background: Cerebral stroke is the third leading cause of death after cardiovascular disease, cancer and the leading cause of disability for patients. Hyperbaric oxygen is a non-drug treatment that has the potential to improve brain function for patients with ischaemic stroke. The objective of this study was to evaluate the results of treatment of acute cerebral infarction with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT).
Materials and methods: This was a case-control study. One hundred ninety-five patients diagnosed with cerebral infarction, with signs of onset within 24 hours, were treated at the Centre for Underwater Medicine and Hyperbaric Oxygen of Vietnam National Institute of Maritime Medicine during the period from January 2020 to December 2022. Study group included 100 patients with acute cerebral infarction treated with a combination of HBOT and medication and reference group included 95 patients treated by medication only (antiplatelets drugs, statins, control of associated risks factors) RESULTS: After 7 days of treatment with hyperbaric oxygen (HBO), symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea, sensory disturbances, and Glasgow score of the study group improved better than that of the reference group (p < 0.01). Movement recovery in the study group was better than the reference group: the percentage of patients with mild and moderate paralysis in the study group increased higher than that of the reference group (86.0% and 68.4%), the degree of complete paralysis of the study group decreased more than that of the reference group (14.0% and 31.6%). The degree of independence in daily activities in the study group was better than the reference group. In the study group, the percentage of patients with complete independence in daily life increased from 27.0% to 84.0%. In the reference group, the rate of patients who were independent in their daily activities increased from 37.9% to 51.6%. The average number of treatment days of the study group was 10.32 ± 2.41 days and it the reference group 14.51 ± 3.24 days.
Conclusions: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a non-drug treatment with many good effects in the treatment of cerebral infarction, especially acute cerebral infarction. HBOT reduces and improves functional symptoms, improves mobility, and reduces treatment time for patients.
