Abstract: ... production in p[over →]+p[over →] collisions at sqrt[s]=510  GeV. The measurements have been performed ...

Abstract We present measurements of the cross section and double-helicity asymmetry A_{LL} of direct-photon production in p[over →]+p[over →] collisions at sqrt[s]=510  GeV. The measurements have been performed at midrapidity (|η|<0.25) with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. At relativistic energies, direct photons are dominantly produced from the initial quark-gluon hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force at leading order. Therefore, at sqrt[s]=510  GeV, where leading-order-effects dominate, these measurements provide clean and direct access to the gluon helicity in the polarized proton in the gluon-momentum-fraction range 0.02<x<0.08, with direct sensitivity to the sign of the gluon contribution.<br />

Abstract Adsorption-mediated methods for environmental pollution control are suitable as they are cost-effective and easy to use. Porous materials can play an important role in adsorption studies. Herein, we synthesized a p-n heterostructure of phosphorene and metal oxide using a simple hydrothermal approach. The synthesized material is porous in nature, with a surface area of 127.44 m

Abstract Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease. Recently, several gain-of-function mutations in SPTLC1 were associated with juvenile ALS. SPTLC1 encodes for a subunit of the serine-palmitoyltransferase (SPT) - the rate-limiting enzyme in the de novo synthesis of sphingolipids (SL). SPT activity, and thus SL de novo synthesis, is tightly controlled by a homeostatic feedback mechanism mediated by ORMDL proteins. Here we report a novel SPTLC1p.L38R mutation in a young Chinese girl with a signature of juvenile ALS. The patient presented with muscular weakness and atrophy, tongue tremor and fasciculation, breathing problems and positive pyramidal signs. All SPTLC1-ALS mutations including the SPTLC1 p.L38R are located within a single membrane-spanning domain of the protein and impede the interaction with the regulatory ORMDL subunit of SPT. Pertinent to the altered homeostatic control, lipid analysis showed overall increased SL levels in the patient plasma. An increased SPT activity and SL de novo synthesis was confirmed in p.L38R expressing HEK293 cells. Particularily dihydro-sphingolipids (dhSL) were signficantly increased in patient plasma and p.L38R mutant expressing cells. Increased dhSL formation has been previously linked to neurotoxicity and may be involved in the pathomechanism of SPTLC1-ALS mutations.

Abstract: ... photons in p^{↑}+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200  GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic ...

Abstract Studying spin-momentum correlations in hadronic collisions offers a glimpse into a three-dimensional picture of proton structure. The transverse single-spin asymmetry for midrapidity isolated direct photons in p^{↑}+p collisions at sqrt[s]=200  GeV is measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Because direct photons in particular are produced from the hard scattering and do not interact via the strong force, this measurement is a clean probe of initial-state spin-momentum correlations inside the proton and is in particular sensitive to gluon interference effects within the proton. This is the first time direct photons have been used as a probe of spin-momentum correlations at RHIC. The uncertainties on the results are a 50-fold improvement with respect to those of the one prior measurement for the same observable, from the Fermilab E704 experiment. These results constrain gluon spin-momentum correlations in transversely polarized protons.

Abstract p-Chloro-meta-Xylenol (PCMX) is an environmentally hazardous phenolic compound having biocidal and antiseptic activity. Very few research publications addressed monitoring this contaminant. This paper presents a rapid sensing system to quantify it in waste water samples. The electrochemical activity of PCMX was exploited through a unique polymeric nanocomposite modified transducer for its quantification. Poly[(3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene)-co-(o-phenylenediamine)] [P(EDOT-co-OPD)] was deposited through one-step electropolymerization technique on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) modified by functionalized multi-wall carbon nanotubes (fMWCNTs). An optimized combination of these constituents was evaluated using response surface methodology (RSM) based Box-Behnken experimental design. This maximized the response for PCMX using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The sensing matrix was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The structural and morphological study of the modified film was conducted by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The anodic peak current could be read from a wide range of 0.5-225 μM calibration curve with a detection limit of 0.2545 μmol L

Abstract The majority of freshwater ecosystems worldwide suffer from eutrophication, particularly because of agriculture-derived nutrient sources. In the European Union, a discrepancy exists between the scale of regulatory assessment and the size of research catchments. The Water Framework Directive sets water quality objectives at the mesoscale (50-500 km

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate the role of BTBD10 in glioma tumorigenesis. The mRNA and protein levels of BTBD10 in 52 glioma tissues and eight normal brain tissues were determined using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot analysis, respectively. U251 human glioblastoma cells were infected with BTBD10-expressing or control lentiviruses. Cell growth was evaluated using the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay. Cell apoptosis and cell cycle distribution were analyzed using flow cytometry. Cyclin D1 and p-Akt levels were determined using western blot analysis. The results showed that BTBD10 mRNA and protein levels were significantly lower in glioma tissues than in normal brain tissues. Additionally, BTBD10 levels were significantly lower in high-grade gliomas than in low-grade tumors. Compared with control cells, U251 cells overexpressing BTBD10 exhibited decreased cell proliferation, increased cell accumulation at the G0/G1 phase, increased cell apoptosis, and decreased levels of cyclin D1 and p-Akt. These findings show that BTBD10 is downregulated in human glioma tissue and that BTBD10 expression negatively correlates with the pathological grade of the tumor. Furthermore, BTBD10 overexpression inhibits proliferation, induces G0/G1 arrest, and promotes apoptosis in human glioblastoma cells by downregulating cyclin D1- and Akt-dependent signaling pathways.
