    Abstract Background: Maintaining optimal blood inventory levels in hospitals is important to prevent blood shortage and wastage. We aimed to provide an efficient blood inventory management strategy for hospital blood banks nation-wide by comparing the current use of 5-day issuable stock (IS) with Lim's IS as a novel target IS.
    Methods: The average and CV of daily usage (DU) were calculated from information entered into Korea's Blood Management System by 194 participating hospitals in 2019 and 2020. Using these data, Lim's IS was calculated by determining the simulated annual average blood shortage day nearest to 1 for each blood group in each hospital. The 5-day IS (5IS) was estimated by multiplying the average DU in 2018 by five to count the shortage days in 2019.
    Results: The average DU (0.3-231.3 units) and corresponding CV (0.33-7.14) in the participating hospitals were inversely proportional (r=-0.699 to -0.695). The hypothetical averages of 5IS and Lim's IS were 27.0±41.2 and 24.7±20.8, respectively (
    Conclusions: While 5IS was unacceptable for universal application, Lim's IS remained near one shortage day and is considered more efficient than 5IS. Hospitals should implement indicators that consider DU and its variations. This is the first study to introduce Lim's IS as an indicator of optimal blood inventory, and the data are expected to provide guidance for effective blood inventory management nationwide, particularly during blood shortages.

    Abstract Despite the increasing numbers of red tide events in the pristine subtropical ocean, a paucity of previous observations has limited understanding of harmful algae in the seas around the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, using six years (2012–2017) of Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) satellite data, we characterized the red tides around Jeju Island, a volcanic island located near the paths of the Jeju Warm Current and Tsushima Warm Current, using the Normalized Red Tide Index (NRTI) method. The seawater around Jeju Island has for a long time been considered to be very clear, with relatively low suspended particulate matter concentrations and few harmful algae. Nonetheless, the satellite-based NRTI detection method used in this study detected and supported the existence of red tides in the coastal region around Jeju Island. Analysis of the red tide distribution showed that red tide first began to appear near the western coast of Jeju Island, then developed in the northern and eastern coastal regions, and finally vanished in the eastern coastal region. The monthly averages of the NRTI demonstrated a bloom event from April to May in every year. Additional fall blooms were detected in August–September, particularly in 2013 and 2016. The NRTI revealed strong interannual variations. The longest blooms occurred in 2015, and the most comprehensive and strongest event occurred in the spring of 2016. The latter three years (2015–2017) had much higher NRTI than the former three years (2012–2014). The probability of red tide occurrence at a given point during the 6-year study period revealed spatial differences. Relatively high probability of 0.3–0.5 was determined along the northern coastal region, whereas low probability of less than 0.2 was found along the southern region. Ground truth data also showed more frequent observations and higher red tide cell densities along the northern coast.     Abstract Extreme value analysis (EVA) has been extensively used to understand and predict long-term return extreme values. This study provides the first approach to EVA using satellite-observed sea surface temperature (SST) data over the past decades. Representative EVA methods were compared to select an appropriate method to derive SST extremes of the East/Japan Sea (EJS). As a result, the peaks-over-threshold (POT) method showed better performance than the other methods. The Optimum Interpolation Sea Surface Temperature (OISST) database was used to calculate the 100-year-return SST values in the EJS. The calculated SST extremes were 1.60–3.44°C higher than the average value of the upper 5th-percentile satellite-observed SSTs over the past decades (1982–2018). The monthly distribution of the SST extremes was similar to the known seasonal variation of SSTs in the EJS, but enhanced extreme SSTs exceeding 2°C appeared in early summer and late autumn. The calculated 100-year-return SSTs were compared with the simulation results of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project 5 (CMIP5) climate model. As a result, the extreme SSTs were slightly smaller than the maximum SSTs of the model data with a negative bias of –0.36°C. This study suggests that the POT method can improve our understanding of future oceanic warming based on statistical approaches using SSTs observed by satellites over the past decades.

    Abstract A hazardous noxious substance (HNS) spill accident is one of the most devastating maritime disasters as it is accompanied by toxicity, fire, and explosions in the ocean. To monitor an HNS spill, it is necessary to develop a remote sensing–based HNS monitoring technique that can observe a wide area with high resolution. We designed and performed a ground HNS spill experiment using a hyperspectral sensor to detect HNS spill areas and estimate the spill volume. HNS images were obtained by pouring 1 L of toluene into an outdoor marine pool and observing it with a hyperspectral sensor capable of measuring the shortwave infrared channel installed at a height of approximately 12 m. The pure endmember spectra of toluene and seawater were extracted using principal component analysis and N-FINDR, and a Gaussian mixture model was applied to the toluene abundance fraction. Consequently, a toluene spill area of approximately 2.4317 m2 was detected according to the 36% criteria suitable for HNS detection. The HNS thickness estimation was based on a three-layer two-beam interference theory model. Because toluene has a maximum extinction coefficient of 1.3055 mm at a wavelength of 1,678 nm, the closest 1,676.5 nm toluene reflectance image was used for thickness estimation. Considering the detection area and ground resolution, the amount of leaked toluene was estimated to be 0.9336 L. As the amount of toluene used in the actual ground experiment was 1 L, the accuracy of our estimation is approximately 93.36%. Previous studies on HNS monitoring based on remote sensing are lacking in comparison to those on oil spills. This study is expected to contribute to the establishment of maritime HNS spill response strategies in the near future based on the novel hyperspectral HNS experiment.

    Abstract The chemokine receptor CCR7 is a well-established homing receptor for dendritic cells (DCs) and T-cells. Interaction with the CCL19 and CCL21 ligands promotes priming of immune responses in lymphoid tissues; however, the mechanism underlying CCR7-induced immune responses against helminth parasite infection remains unknown. Thus, we examined the role of CCR7 in generating protective immune responses against intracellular Trichinella spiralis infection. The results showed significantly increased CCR7, CCL19 and CCL21 expression in the muscle tissue compared to that in the intestinal tissue in T. spiralis-infected mice. The CCR7-expressing DC population increased in the mesenteric and peripheral lymph nodes (PLNs) during T. spiralis infection. Notably, the number of CCR7-expressing cells in PLNs increased by more than 30% at 28 days post-infection; however, this increase was significantly inhibited in CCR7-blocked mice treated with CCR7-specific antibodies.
