Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used by the Chinese population for treatment of chronic hepatitis. However, the efficacy of TCM for patients with chronic hepatitis has not been confirmed, mostly due to the lack of available scientific parameters such as serum viral load to evaluate treatment response.
Aim of the study: We evaluated the efficacy of Rong-Yang-Jyh-Gan-Tang (RYJGT, composed of Long-Dan-Xie-Gan-Tang, Jia-Wei-Xia-Yao-San, Dan-Shen, and Hou-Po) on patients with chronic hepatitis C.
Materials and methods: Thirty-six patients with chronic hepatitis C who had no response to or had contraindications to interferon-ribavirin therapy were randomly allocated to receive RYJGT 15g/day or placebo for 12 weeks. After a 2-week washout period, patients were crossed over to receive placebo or RYJGT for another 12 weeks. Evaluation parameters included liver biochemistries, serum HCVRNA, side effects of RYJGT/placebo, and TCM symptoms.
Results: Of the patients who had 12-week RYJGT treatment, 51.7% had decreased serum HCVRNA levels, whereas only 25.8% patients had decreased levels in the placebo group (p=0.036). TCM patterns of "Damp-Heat" and "Liver Qi Depression" had significantly improved after RYJGT treatment in comparison with the placebo. Logistic analyses showed that RYJGT treatment, and pre-treatment values of TCM symptoms of "Damp-Heat" and "Liver Qi Depression", were statistically significant factors in predicting the decrease in serum HCVRNA.
Conclusion: Chronic hepatitis C patients who received a 12-week RYJGT treatment had significantly higher HCVRNA decrease ratio, and improved TCM symptoms of "Damp-Heat" and "Liver Qi Depression", than those who received the placebo. Our results require further larger scale clinical trials.

Abstract Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) based on atherosclerosis remain the main reason for death in Western countries and China. Cardiovascular research has demonstrated that its pathogenesis is closely associated with endothelial cell (EC) injury, the phenotypic transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), and the abnormal biological behaviour of macrophages. In recent years, circular RNAs (circRNAs) have received much attention for their unique role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. In this review, we discussed the mechanisms associated with ECs, VSMCs, and macrophages in atherosclerosis and summarized the role of circRNAs in atherosclerosis. This review aims to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.

Abstract Ferroptosis is a regulated form of cell death characterized by the accumulation of oxidized phospholipids, particularly oxidized phosphatidylethanolamines (PE), which serve as important biomarkers in the progression of various diseases. To facilitate the comprehensive investigation of ferroptosis in biological systems, we present a robust and versatile untargeted redox phospholipidomics method employing normal-phase liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). This high-throughput technique enables the identification and quantification of dozens of oxidized phospholipid species in a single run, providing valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying ferroptosis. It has been successfully applied to diverse biological samples, including human patients, animals, and cell cultures, and offers a powerful tool for investigating the roles of oxidized phospholipids in the development and progression of various diseases.

Abstract The Passive Daytime Radiative Cooler (PDRC) exhibits potential in enhancing building energy conservation due to its high emissivity in wavelength between 8 μm and 13 μm. However, current building energy simulation programs, e.g., EnergyPlus, generally adopt a constant emissivity. To implement the wavelength-dependent PDRC model into EnergyPlus, a roof model was introduced to couple it with EnergyPlus to assess the energy saving potential of PDRC more reasonably. To assess the PDRC roofs, the impact of buildings constructed in different eras, building heights, and climatic conditions in China on building energy saving was investigated. The results showed that more energy was saved in regions with high cooling demands e.g., Shanghai and Guangzhou. Applying PDRC on roofs of buildings constructed pre 2001 in severe cold regions increased building energy consumptions. Furthermore, buildings with well insulated roofs coated by PDRC were not equally beneficial for reducing cooling demands in summer compared to buildings with non-insulated roofs, but heating demands in winter could be reduced. With an increase in building height, the energy saving potential of PDRC roofs was reduced. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis was imperative considering the local climates as well as the building itself when PDRC is to be applied.
