    Abstract For culturally and linguistically diverse children, early second language (L2) development is important for school achievement and social inclusion. These children face challenges in acquiring L2, especially in Hong Kong, where the dominant Chinese language contrasts strongly with their home languages. Studies that compared the language abilities of first language (L1) and L2 students in English-speaking contexts have reported young L2 learners' disadvantage in using the dominant language in oral language and comprehension at school entry. The findings raise the question of whether L2 learners who fall behind their L1 peers in language abilities will be further disadvantaged, showing a weaker development gradient. This study used the Chinese Character Acquisition Assessment (CCAA) to compare character acquisition of 491 L2 children aged from 3 to 6 years against that of 240 of their L1 peers from Hong Kong kindergartens. The CCAA is comprised of six subtests and assesses children's abilities to make associations among character written form (orthography), sound, and meaning. Results showed that L2 learners had greater development in meaning and sound associations across class levels, implying that they may first develop oral language related abilities. In addition, results indicate that diverging gaps between L1 and L2 learners' Chinese character acquisition existed across class levels for the associations involving written character form, but not in regard to associations between character meaning and sound. This study highlights the Chinese learning needs of L2 preschoolers and provides understanding of their abilities in mapping among character written forms, sounds, and meanings. The findings suggest the importance of supporting L2 children's oral language at earlier stages of Chinese learning, and the need to provide instructional support to compensate for their relative weakness in literacy at school entry.

    Abstract Background: Metal implants have been preferentially used in THA due to its biocompatibility, mechanical stability and durability. Yet concerns have emerged regarding their potential to release metallic ions, leading to long-term adverse effects, including carcinogenicity. This study aimed to investigate the risk of cancer development in patients with orthopaedic metal implants in total hip arthroplasty (THA).
    Methods: Patients with THA conducted at a local tertiary implant centre from 2001-2008 were linked to the local cancer registry and followed up to the end of 2023. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) for cancer incidence and its confidence interval by Poisson distribution were calculated. Survival analysis was depicted using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the log-rank test was used to assess the differences across groups.
    Results: The study cohort included 388 patients and 53 cancers diagnosed during follow-up, at least 5 years post THA. All-site cancer risks were increased in patients with THA (SIR: 1.97; 95% CI: 1.48-2.46), validated with chi-square analysis (chi-square = 15.2551, N = 100,388,

    Abstract Biocompatible synthetic supramolecular systems have shed light on biomedical and tissue-regenerative material applications. The intrinsic functional applicability, tunability, and stimuli-responsiveness of synthetic supramolecular systems allow one to develop various multicontrolled supramolecular assemblies in aqueous media. However, it remains highly challenging to use state-of-the-art supramolecular assemblies of photoresponsive amphiphiles controlled by multiple stimulations in fabricating macroscopic materials.     Abstract Redox signaling alterations contribute to chronic kidney disease (CKD)-associated cachexia. This review aims to summarize studies about redox pathophysiology in CKD-associated cachexia and muscle wasting and to discuss potential therapeutic approaches based on antioxidant and anti-inflammatory molecules to restore redox homeostasis. Enzymatic and non-enzymatic systems of antioxidant molecules have been studied in experimental models of kidney diseases and patients with CKD. Oxidative stress is increased by several factors present in CKD, including uremic toxins, inflammation, and metabolic and hormone alterations, leading to muscle wasting. Rehabilitative nutritional and physical exercises have shown beneficial effects for CKD-associated cachexia. Anti-inflammatory molecules have also been tested in experimental models of CKD. The importance of oxidative stress has been shown by experimental studies in which antioxidant therapies ameliorated CKD and its associated complications in the 5/6 nephrectomy model. Treatment of CKD-associated cachexia is a challenge and further studies are necessary to investigate potential therapies involving antioxidant therapy.

    Abstract Objective: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence, clinical correlates and the relationship between hypersomnolence and clinical outcomes in a cohort of MDD patients.
    Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of a MDD cohort in an university-affiliated adult psychiatric outpatient clinic. The diagnosis of MDD and severity of depression were ascertained by the clinician with structured clinical interviews. Each participant completed the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), 1-week sleep diary, and a battery of questionnaires that assessed usual sleep pattern, insomnia, anxiety, depression, fatigue and circadian preference. Hypersomnolence was defined as ESS score ≥14 among those reported ≥7 h of nighttime sleep. Univariate analysis and multiple logistic regression were used to analyze the relationships between the variables.
    Results: Among 252 recruited subjects, 11 % met the criteria of hypersomnolence as defined by a ESS score ≥14 despite ≥7 h of nighttime sleep. Patients with hypersomnolence had greater depression ratings, higher rates of suicidal ideations over the past week, and more likely to meet a diagnosis of atypical depression (p < 0.05) than those without hypersomnolence. Step-wise logistic regression demonstrated that hypersomnolence was an independent risk factor associated with a 3-fold increase in the risk of depression non-remission (adjusted OR 3.13; 95 % CI 1.10-8.95; p = 0.034).
    Conclusion: Patients with hypersomnolence despite seemingly adequate sleep represent a subgroup of MDD patients who have a more severe illness profile with higher non-remission rate and suicidality. The findings highlight the importance of addressing both sleep and mood symptoms in the management of MDD.

    Abstract Background and aims: We investigated whether empagliflozin reduces hepatic steatosis in patients with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease without diabetes mellitus.
    Approach and results: This was an investigator-initiated, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial recruiting adult subjects from the community. Eligible subjects without diabetes mellitus (fasting plasma glucose < 7 mmol/L and HbA1c < 6.5%) who had magnetic resonance imaging-proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) ≥ 5% were randomly allocated to receive empagliflozin 10 mg daily or placebo (1:1 ratio) for 52 weeks (end of treatment, EOT). MRI-PDFF was conducted at baseline and EOT. The primary outcome was the difference in change of MRI-PDFF between the 2 groups at EOT. Secondary outcomes were hepatic steatosis resolution (MRI-PDFF < 5%), alanine aminotransferase drop ≥ 17 U/L, MRI-PDFF decline ≥ 30%, a combination of both, and changes of anthropometric and laboratory parameters at EOT. All outcomes were based on intention-to-treat analysis. Of 98 recruited subjects (median age: 55.7 y [IQR:49.5-63.4]; male:54 [55.1%]), 97 (empagliflozin:49, placebo:48; median MRI-PDFF:9.7% vs 9.0%) had MRI-PDFF repeated at EOT. The Empagliflozin group had a greater reduction in median MRI-PDFF compared to the placebo group (-2.49% vs. -1.43%; p = 0.025), with a nonsignificant trend of resolution of hepatic steatosis (44.9% vs. 28.6%; p = 0.094). There was no significant difference in alanine aminotransferase drop ≥ 17 U/L (16.3% vs. 12.2%; p = 0.564), MRI-PDFF drop ≥ 30% (49.0% vs. 40.8%; p = 0.417), and composite outcome (8.2% vs. 8.2%; p = 1.000). Empagliflozin group had a greater drop in body weight (-2.7 vs. -0.2 kg), waist circumference (-2.0 vs. 0 cm), fasting glucose (-0.3 vs. 0 mmol/L), and ferritin (-126 vs. -22 pmol/L) (all p < 0.05).
    Conclusions: Empagliflozin for 52 weeks reduces hepatic fat content in subjects with nondiabetic metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease. (ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04642261).

    Abstract Cachexia associated with chronic kidney disease (CKD) has been linked to GH resistance. In CKD, GH treatment enhances muscular performance. We investigated the impact of GH on cachexia brought on by CKD. CKD was induced by 5/6 nephrectomy in c57BL/6J mice. After receiving GH (10 mg/kg/day) or saline treatment for six weeks, CKD mice were compared to sham-operated controls. GH normalized metabolic rate, increased food intake and weight growth, and improved in vivo muscular function (rotarod and grip strength) in CKD mice. GH decreased uncoupling proteins (UCP)s and increased muscle and adipose tissue ATP content in CKD mice. GH decreased lipolysis of adipose tissue by attenuating expression and protein content of adipose triglyceride lipase and protein content of phosphorylated hormone-sensitive lipase in CKD mice. GH reversed the increased expression of beige adipocyte markers (UCP-1, CD137, Tmem26, Tbx1, Prdm16, Pgc1α, and Cidea) and molecules implicated in adipose tissue browning (Cox2/Pgf2α, Tlr2, Myd88, and Traf6) in CKD mice. Additionally, GH normalized the molecular markers of processes connected to muscle wasting in CKD, such as myogenesis and muscle regeneration. By using RNAseq, we previously determined the top 12 skeletal muscle genes differentially expressed between mice with CKD and control animals. These 12 genes' aberrant expression has been linked to increased muscle thermogenesis, fibrosis, and poor muscle and neuron regeneration. In this study, we demonstrated that GH restored 7 of the top 12 differentially elevated muscle genes in CKD mice. In conclusion, GH might be an effective treatment for muscular atrophy and browning of adipose tissue in CKD-related cachexia.

    Abstract The Italian Spine Youth Quality of Life (ISYQOL) is a validated health-related quality of life (HRQOL) questionnaire for teenagers with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). We culturally-adapted ISYQOL to traditional Chinese (ISYQOL-TC) and then recruited 133 conservatively treated teenagers with AIS to complete the ISYQOL-TC and the Chinese version of the Scoliosis Research Society-22 revised (SRS-22r) questionnaire, nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), seven-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder scale (GAD-7), and numeric pain rating scale (NPRS). They repeated ISYQOL-TC two weeks later. The internal consistency, unidimensionality, and test-retest reliability were measured using the Cronbach's alpha, Rasch measurement models, and intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC3,1), respectively. The concurrent validity of the ISYQOL-TC with SRS-22r, and its construct validity with other questionnaires were evaluated using Spearman correlation coefficients. The ISYQOL-TC demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.90 and 0.89 for items 1-13 and items 1-20), and excellent test-retest reliability (ICC3,1 = 0.95-0.96). The Rasch analysis supported the unidimensionality of all 20 items in ISYQOL-TC. The ISYQOL-TC percentage scores were positively correlated with SRS-22r total scores (r = 0.65;
