Abstract Objectives: This study aimed to describe the incidence and features of asymptomatic COVID-19 infections among healthcare workers (HCWs) at a tertiary hospital in Oman.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2020 and February 2021 among HCWs with no history of COVID-19 infection. An online questionnaire collected sociodemographic and clinical data. COVID-19 infection was diagnosed using nasopharyngeal/throat swabs, which were tested for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Analyses were performed using the Chi-squared test, Fisher's exact test or univariate ordinary least squares regression, as appropriate.
Results: A total of 583 HCWs participated in the study, most of whom were female (56.6%), and the mean age was 35
Conclusion: There was a greater frequency of SARS-CoV-2 positivity among HCWs working in low-risk areas, whereas HCWs who worked in high-risk areas were significantly more likely to report increased compliance with infection control strategies.

Abstract Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided liver biopsy is gaining popularity for liver parenchymal sampling due to its detailed visualization of liver anatomy, precision in sampling, and the ability to combine liver biopsy with other endoscopic goals. In this study, we present a case involving an anatomically complex, immunocompromised patient who underwent EUS-guided liver biopsy. While the samples were sufficient and progressed the management of her autoimmune hepatitis, her course was complicated by a multiloculated liver abscess. EUS liver biopsy has an excellent safety profile, but a small risk of infection remains, especially in immunocompromised patients or those with preexisting biliary obstruction.

Abstract Background: To present the population-based cancer statistics for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Pakistan, an incidence study was conducted at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in Lahore, Pakistan, in 2023.
Methods: Records from various centres on new cancers diagnosed among residents of KP between January and December 2020 were gathered. Both active and passive methods of data collection were applied, and the information was saved in a central repository at SKMCH&RC. The incidence rates were computed by age group and sex and presented per 100,000 population.
Results: Among children (0-14 years), the Age-Standardised Incidence Rate (ASIR) was 4.0 in girls and 6.1 in boys, and haematologic malignancies were more prevalent; in adolescents (15-19 years), the ASIR was 7.7 in females, 9.4 in males, and bone tumours, haematologic malignancies, and neurological cancers were prominent; in adult females (> / = 20 years), the ASIR was 84.9, and cancers of the breast, digestive system, and reproductive organs were predominant; and adult males, the ASIR was 73.0, and cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, lip/oral cavity/pharynx, prostate, and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) were common.
Conclusions: It is crucial to investigate the aetiology of these diseases at the community level because dietary elements, infectious diseases, and tobacco use all appear to be significant contributors. Prospective studies could play a key role in highlighting the factors linked to these diseases. Therefore, cancer registration must continue in conjunction with the exploration of risk factors.

Abstract Background: Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt infections in adults represent a severe complication and make treatment more challenging. Therefore, drug susceptibility patterns are crucial for therapeutic decisions and infection control in neurosurgical centers. This 7-year retrospective study aimed to identify the bacteria responsible for adult VP shunt infections and determine their drug susceptibility patterns.
Methods: This single-center study was performed from 2015 to 2021 in Lahore, Pakistan, and included CSF cultures from VP shunt infections. Demographic data, causative organisms, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing results were collected. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and two-sample t-tests were used to analyze and compare the antibiotic sensitivity trends over the study period.
Results: 14,473 isolates recovered from 13,937 CSF samples of VP shunt infections were identified and analyzed for their susceptibility patterns to antimicrobials. The proportion of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria were 11,030 (76%) and 3443 (24)%, respectively. The predominant bacteria were Acinetobacter species (n = 5898, 41%), followed by Pseudomonas species (n = 2368, 16%) and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CoNS) (n = 1880, 13%). 100% of Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) and CoNS were sensitive to vancomycin and linezolid (n = 2580). However, 52% of S. aureus (719/1,343) were methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Acinetobacter showed maximum sensitivity to meropenem at 69% (2759/4768). Pseudomonas was 80% (1385/1863 sensitive to piperacillin-tazobactam, Escherichia coli (E. coli) showed 72% to amikacin (748/1055), while Klebsiella spp. was 57% (574/1170) sensitive to piperacillin-tazobactam. The sensitivity of piperacillin-tazobactam and meropenem for Gram-negative bacteria decreased significantly (p < 0.05) over 7 years, with 92.2% and 88.91% sensitive in 2015 and 66.7% and 62.8% sensitive in 2021, respectively.
Conclusion: The significant decrease in the effectiveness of carbapenem and beta-lactam/beta-lactamase inhibitor combination drugs for the common Gram-negative causative agents of VP shunt infections suggests that alternative antibiotics such as colistin, fosfomycin, ceftazidime/avibactam, ceftolozane/tazobactam, and tigecycline should be considered and in consequence included in testing panels. Additionally, it is recommended to adopt care bundles for the prevention of VP shunt infection.

Abstract This article analyzed the crime network of Nineveh province based on the concepts of Complex Networks. To this end, two networks were created; the first represented the crimes that were committed in Nineveh province, while the second was the network of crime regions. These two networks were visualized and then analyzed using network centrality measurements. The results showed that several pairs of crimes had strong relations to each other. Moreover, it was found that some crime regions were considered as the core of crimes in the province. The results also showed that few regions were considered as the most dangerous parts of the province and they had strong tendencies to replicate their behaviour to other regions. Finally, the authors believe this is the first kind of works that take the crime network of Nineveh province as a case study

Abstract The 2 most significant complications of colonoscopy with polypectomy are bleeding and perforation. Although the incidence rates are generally low (<1%), these can be avoided by recognizing pertinent risk factors, which can be patient, polyp, and technique/device related. Endoscopists should be equipped to manage bleeding and perforation. Currently available devices and techniques to achieve hemostasis and manage colon perforations are reviewed.
