Abstract Non small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is an important subject threatening public health. There is not a marker for early detection of this cancer type in practice yet. When studies on this subject were searched, cytokines show promise in diagnosis and guiding treatment. The reason for selecting serum M-CSF and G-CSF levels is observing tumor related leukocytosis in most of the NSCLC patients. In our study, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, we compared serum M-CSF and G-CSF levels of 24 newly diagnosed NSCLC cases with 30 healthy individuals. Our data suggests that patients' serum G-CSF levels were significantly higher than controls (103.2 ± 52.4 pg/mL for patients and 25.0 ± 4.5 pg/mL for controls, p<0.001) but not significantly different in M-CSF levels (250.7 ± 102.9 pg/mL for patients and 211.6 ± 57.8 pg/mL for controls, p>0.05). Our patients' neutrophil count was higher than the normal range (mean 7.7 x 10⁹/L, N=2.5-7.5 x 10⁹/L). Increased serum G-CSF levels with high neutrophil counts in patients suggests tumor related increase of this cytokine but there was no relationship between serum cytokines and tumor type. There are different results in the literature about cytokine levels in NSCLC patients but the main conclusion, with which we concur, is that ongoing studies will provide consistent results of value to patients.

Abstract Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an extremely rare and aggressive hematopoietic tumor. Although it can be seen at any anatomic location, the most common primary sites are skin as extranodal region, locations including the lymph nodes and gastrointestinal tract. To the best of our knowledge, in light of PubMed search, this is the first primary tonsillar HS case presented with disseminated metastases at the time of diagnosis. A 58-year-old male patient applied with swelling on the right side of the neck, difficulty in swallowing, and weight loss. Positron emission tomography computed tomography was performed and increased pathological 18F fluorodeoxy D glucose uptake was detected in the right palatine tonsil, bilateral cervical multiple lymph nodes, liver masses, intra abdominal lymph nodes, and nodular lesion in the left adrenal gland. Tonsillectomy was performed and the pathological result was reported as HS. The patient did not respond to any treatment and had died after 5 months from the date of diagnosis. In conclusion, HS is generally diagnosed at advanced stage, it has limited chemotherapy response and high mortality rates. To understand this rare disease's pathophysiological and clinical features, further investigations are needed.

Abstract Tamoxifen plays a critical role in the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Despite these great benefits against breast cancer, tamoxifen increases the risk of endometrial pathologies such as endometrial hyperplasia, polyp, and neoplasms because of agonistic effect on endometrial tissues. Therefore, gynecologic follow-up should be carried out during tamoxifen treatment. Uterine tumors are frequently detected as the result of presentation with abnormal uterine bleeding. In addition, genital tract's metastases from distant primary tumors can present with abnormal uterine bleeding. Therefore, it is important to determine whether the uterine mass is metastatic or primary because different treatment modalities are used for them. In this context, breast carcinomas are the most frequent metastatic tumors, particularly invasive lobular carcinoma. Here, we report an invasive lobular carcinoma case that presented with abnormal uterine bleeding while receiving tamoxifen therapy and has metastasize in the uterus.

Abstract GATA3, as a transcription factor, is associated with estrogen receptor (ER) expression and necessary for luminal cell differentiation in mammary glands. Association of GATA3 expression with clinicopathological parameters, molecular subtypes of tumors, disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS) for breast carcinoma patients were evaluated in this study. We immunohistochemically stained GATA3, CK5/6, EGFR, CK14 and vimentin on tissue microarray blocks of 457 invasive breast carcinomas. Tumors are sub-classified as luminal A, luminal B, HER2 expressing, basal-like and null type according to their hormonal status with cerbB2, CK 5/6 and EGFR expressions. Follow-up data for 254 cases were obtained. 215/457 (47%) tumors were GATA3 positive. GATA3 expression was inversely correlated with mitotic count (p<0.0001), nuclear grade (p=0.001), histological grade (p=0.001), tumor necrosis (p=0.001), stromal lymphocytic response (p<0.01), nipple invasion (p=0.01), metastasis (p=0.03), vimentin (p=0.0003), EGFR (p=0.015) and CK14 (p=0.001) expressions; and directly associated with ER (p<0.0001) and progesterone receptor (PR) (p<0.0001) expressions. Luminal A carcinomas had the highest frequency for GATA-3 (140/245), however basal-like carcinomas had the lowest (1/42) (p<0.0001). None of the medullary and metaplastic carcinomas expressed GATA3. GATA3 was associated with good DFS and OS (p=0.001 and p=0.0009) and was an independent prognostic factor for OS. GATA3 expression, regardless of the subtype, may have a prognostic significance for breast carcinomas through its ability to promote the differentiation of luminal progenitor cells.

Abstract Introduction: The aim of this study is to investigate and summarize the treatment efficacy and adverse effects (AEs) of sorafenib in the treatment of metastatic medullary thyroid carcinomas (MTCs).
Methods: We included studies reporting the treatment efficacy or drug toxicity of sorafenib as a single therapeutic agent in MTCs. Pooled incidence and its 95% confidence interval (CI) for complete response, partial response (PR), stable disease (SD), and sorafenib-related AEs were calculated using random-effect model.
Results: Eight trials with 101 metastatic MTCs were included for meta-analyses. The overall PR and SD were 21% (95% CI = 9-33) and 58% (95% CI = 41-75), respectively. Hand-foot syndrome, diarrhea, alopecia, mucositis, skin rash, fatigue, and hypertension were the most commonly observed AEs.
Conclusion: Our results show that sorafenib treatment has a modest effect and might be a candidate treatment in patients with metastatic MTCs who have failed other therapeutic regimens.

Abstract Membraneous nephropathy (MN) is the most commonly occurring nephrotic syndrome in adults as well as the most common paraneoplastic nephropathy associated with solid tumors, and it is mostly associated with gastrointestinal system and lung carcinomas. Accurate diagnosis is important as the treatment of paraneoplastic glomerulonephritis is very varied from that of idiopathic ones. In the current report, a case of a patient that was referred with proteinuria and edema and was diagnosed with lung cancer, and responded markedly to treatment of malignancy, with improvement of MN, is presented. Active cancer is present in all patients with paraneoplastic MN. In numerous patients, the paraneoplastic MN and cancer diagnoses are made within one year of each other. The treatment of paraneoplastic syndromes is usually associated with the treatment of primary malignancy. There are conflicting data on which treatment modality is more suitable. In conclusion, further studies are required in order to determine the actual incidence of cancer in patients with nephropathy, explain the physiopathological association between cancer and nephropathy and to determine the most suitable treatment approaches.

Abstract Kaposi's sarcoma is an unusual tumor principally affecting the skin of the lower extremities. Although the association between Kaposi's sarcoma and renal transplant has been well documented, there are few Kaposi's sarcoma cases in the literature associated with ulcerative colitis or other inflammatory bowel diseases. This report presents a patient with ulcerative colitis who developed Kaposi's sarcoma following treatment with long-term medium-dose azathioprine and additional corticosteroids. Kaposi's sarcoma is a rare complication in inflammatory bowel diseases that may (or may not) be related to immunosuppression. Hence, immunomodulatory agents should be planned carefully in the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases and avoided if they are not essentially necessary. Cases of colorectal Kaposi's sarcoma complicating inflammatory bowel disease should be managed with a conservative approach and discontinuation of the immunosuppressive treatment.
