Abstract We retrospectively analyzed the effects of dry period length (DPL) on milk yield and postpartum health using 152 commercial dairy farm data, including 46,228 dairy cows in Hokkaido, Japan, and examined the optimal DPL. The DPL was divided into eight categories: ≤25, 26-35, 36-45, 46-55, 56-65 (reference), 66-75, 76-85, and ≥86 d. The total milk yields (the sum of milk yield during the 55 d before and the 305 d milk yield after calving) of cows with DPL of ≤55 d did not differ from the reference group. Cows with DPL of ≤55 d had lower odds ratios (OR) of a displaced abomasum (DA), ketosis, milk fever (MF), and abnormal milk fat-to-protein ratio but had higher puerperal fever (PF) and stillbirth ORs than the reference group. Cows with a DPL of 46-55 d had the lowest PF and stillbirth ORs among the short DPL categories. The extremely short (≤25 d) and long (≥86 d) DPL increased the ORs of mastitis and abnormal liner score of somatic cell counts (SCCs) compared with the reference group. We conclude that shortening DPL can reduce postpartum health problems without reducing milk yield and that the optimal DPL is 46-55 d.

Abstract An 82-year-old man was admitted to our hospital due to dyspnea on exertion. Blood tests showed iron deficiency anemia, and echocardiography revealed severe aortic stenosis (AS). Considering the possibility of Heyde's syndrome, esophagogastroduodenoscopy was performed to confirm the presence or absence of gastrointestinal angiodysplasia. Endoscopy revealed multiple sites of mucosal bleeding in the stomach without angiodysplasia or mucosal erosion. Although it was an atypical endoscopic finding, we diagnosed gastric mucosal bleeding associated with Heyde's syndrome. Since no atypical blood vessels could be found, endoscopic treatment was not performed, and only transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) for aortic valve stenosis was performed. TAVI immediately improved the dyspnea on exertion, and follow-up endoscopy 4 months after TAVI showed the disappearance of the multifocal mucosal bleeding in the stomach. Heyde's syndrome is characterized by AS, acquired deficiency or dysfunction of von Willebrand factor, and gastrointestinal angiodysplasia; however, the exact diagnostic criteria have not been established. This is a case of mucosal bleeding due to Heyde's syndrome, without the typical endoscopic image of angiodysplasia. Cardiologists and gastroenterologists need to consider the possibility of Heyde's syndrome in AS patients with atypical gastrointestinal bleeding on endoscopy.

Abstract We aimed to evaluate the blood lactate level in response to two bouts of exercise. First, we hypothesized that blood lactate elevation in response to moderate-intensity aerobic exercise (MIAE) would be lower at the end of the second bout of MIAE than the first bout of MIAE. In this context, we also hypothesized that lactate accumulation at the end of resistance exercise (RE) would be reduced if MIAE is performed before RE (i.e., concurrent exercise; CE). If so, we hypothesized that the order of the CE (i.e., RE + MIAE vs. MIAE + RE) influences blood lactate kinetics. To test the hypotheses, forty-three healthy men participated in three studies. In study 1, 20 men (age 21 ± 2 years) performed two bouts of a 20-min MIAE separated by a 20-min rest interval. In study 2, 11 men (age 22 ± 1 years) performed RE only and CE (MIAE + RE; AR

Abstract Since 3D-EM closely resembles in vivo muscles, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise (electrical pulse stimulation (EPS)) and nutrition (maca), which contains triterpenes, on muscle hypertrophy by using 3D-EM for the first time. The 3D-EM was composed of C2C12 cells and type 1 collagen gel, was differentiated for 14 days, and was divided into four groups: control, maca, EPS, and maca + EPS. The medium was replaced every two days before each EPS intervention, and the concentration of maca in the culture solution was 1 mg/mL. The intervention conditions of the EPS were 30 V, 1 Hz, and 2 ms (24 h on, 24 h off, for one week). The expression levels of proteins were examined by Western blotting. The intervention of maca and EPS upregulated the expression of MHC-fast/slow (both

Abstract Women who are undergoing preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A) often wish to know how many eggs will be required to optimize the chances of a live birth. However, no precise data on this can yet be provided during genetic counseling for this procedure. On the basis of PGT-A data from related studies and current databases, we have estimated that the number of zygotes required for a 50% chance of a live birth is 8 at age 40 but increases markedly to 21 at age 43. PGT-A markedly reduces the miscarriage rate per embryo transfer but does not alleviate the extremely high number of zygotes required for a live birth in women of an advanced maternal age. Detailed genetic counseling will therefore be desirable prior to undergoing this procedure.

Abstract Abstract We aimed to evaluate the blood lactate level in response to two bouts of exercise. In study 2, 11 men (age 22 ± 1 years) performed RE only and CE (MIAE + RE; ARCE) with a 20-min rest interval in a crossover design. In study 3, 12 men (age 21 ± 2 years) performed both CEs, which were ARCE and RE + MIAE (RACE), with a 20-min rest interval in a crossover design. We measured blood lactate before and at the end of each exercise session. In study 1, the blood lactate response to the second bout of MIAE was lower than that of the first bout (P < 0.001, r = 0.68). However, the blood lactate response to the ARCE trial was not lower than the response to the RE trial in study 2 (P = 0.475, r = 0.22). The results of study 3 showed that the RACE and ARCE trials induced a similar lactate response (MIAE P = 0.423, r = 0.28; RE P = 0.766, d = 0.03). These observations indicate that whereas lactate accumulation might be diminished by a second bout of MIAE, a different type of exercise (i.e., aerobic/resistance) did not result in a diminished lactate accumulation in response to a second bout of exercise.

Abstract Antarctic expeditions have a high risk of participant depression owing to long stays and isolated environments. By quantifying the stress state and changes in biomolecules over time before the onset of depressive symptoms, predictive markers of depression can be explored. Here, we evaluated the psychological changes in 30 participants in the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Urinary samples were collected every three months for a year, and comprehensive urinary metabolomic profiles were quantified using liquid chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Five participants showed major depressive episodes (PHQ-9 ≥ 10) at 12 months. The urinary metabolites between these participants and the 25 unaffected participants were compared at individual metabolite and pathway levels. The individual comparisons showed the most significant differences at 12 months in 14 metabolites, including ornithine and beta-alanine. Data from shorter stays showed less significant differences. In contrast, pathway and enrichment analyses showed the most significant difference at three months and a less significant difference at longer stays. These time transitions of urinary metabolites could help in the development of urinary biomarkers to detect subjects with depressive episodes at an early stage.
