Abstract Sideslip angle is an important variable for understanding and monitoring vehicle dynamics, but there is currently no inexpensive method for its direct measurement. Therefore, it is typically estimated from proprioceptive sensors onboard using filtering methods from the family of the Kalman filter. As a novel alternative, this work proposes modeling the problem directly as a graphical model (factor graph), which can then be optimized using a variety of methods, such as whole-dataset batch optimization for offline processing or fixed-lag smoothing for on-line operation. Experimental results on real vehicle datasets validate the proposal, demonstrating a good agreement between estimated and actual sideslip angle, showing similar performance to state-of-the-art methods but with a greater potential for future extensions due to the more flexible mathematical framework. An open-source implementation of the proposed framework has been made available online.

Abstract This paper investigates non-invasive techniques for annular two-phase flow analysis, focusing on liquid film characterization to understand the interfacial phenomena that are crucial for heat and mass transfer. Limited methods allow the study of the temporal and spatial evolution of liquid film, such as Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF). However, this method possesses optical challenges, leading to the need for improved techniques to mitigate refraction and reflection, such as Refractive Index Matching (RIM). This study utilizes an experimental annular flow facility to analyze both RIM and non-RIM PLIF over a range of liquid Reynolds numbers from 4200 to 10,400. Three configurations-PLIF RIM90, PLIF RIM40, and PLIF nRIM40-are compared from both qualitative and quantitative perspectives. In the quantitative analysis, key variables of the liquid film are measured, namely mean film thickness, disturbance wave height, and frequency. Variations in the analyzed variables indicate minor deviations, which are not likely to be caused by the technique used. However, all three methodologies exhibited errors that are estimated to be within a maximum of 10%, with a mean value of approximately 8%.

Abstract Advances in 3D printing technology have the potential to significantly improve the workflow of maxillofacial surgical planning. In-house fabricated custom positioning and cutting guides allow for intraoperative reproduction of pre-planned osteotomy cuts, which can result in greater surgical accuracy and patient safety while maintaining an acceptable cost-effectiveness ratio. The design and creation of the customized surgical guides is performed in our hospital fab lab, which allows time savings, from an average of 10 days to just 24 hours, and a cost reduction of more than 90%. The process begins with the import of the pre-surgical facial CT scan into 3D software that allows to perform the surgical cuts virtually and the manipulation of the segments. Once the virtual planning of the surgery has been performed, the next step is the creation of the cutting and positioning guides. The final step is the printing of the guides in surgical resin and their sterilization. In addition, post-surgical models can be 3D printed to pre-mold the plates on them, which saves surgical time. The mentoplasty surgery is a simple example of how 3D surgery can be applied to maxillofacial surgery in an efficient way obtaining all the advantages of customized surgery with a limited investment in time and resources.

Abstract The world is going through a climate crisis that is severely impacting the environment and the well-being of the population. The increased consumption of plastics, especially in developing countries, is generating an exponential rise in plastic waste. This article introduces a qualitative investigation in the form of a case study, with data derived from an educational project focused on plastics as a vehicle for environmental education. This project was implemented with a group of 50 children from a Ghanaian school. Our results reveal that the students acquired a high level of knowledge of plastic and its properties, made possible by an active, globalizing, experimental methodology. This knowledge was later reinforced through the fabrication of materials for learning and play made of recycled plastic waste. Through this project, the participating students practiced critical and democratic global citizenship aimed at creating a sustainable world through an ecological perspective.

Abstract In this paper, we present a novel general framework grounded in the factor graph theory to solve kinematic and dynamic problems for multi-body systems. Although the motion of multi-body systems is considered to be a well-studied problem and various methods have been proposed for its solution, a unified approach providing an intuitive interpretation is still pursued. We describe how to build factor graphs to model and simulate multibody systems using both, independent and dependent coordinates. Then, batch optimization or a fixed-lag-smoother can be applied to solve the underlying optimization problem that results in a highly-sparse nonlinear minimization problem. The proposed framework has been tested in extensive simulations and validated against a commercial multibody software. We release a reference implementation as an open-source C++ library, based on the GTSAM framework, a well-known estimation library. Simulations of forward and inverse dynamics are presented, showing comparable accuracy with classical approaches. The proposed factor graph-based framework has the potential to be integrated into applications related with motion estimation and parameter identification of complex mechanical systems, ranging from mechanisms to vehicles, or robot manipulators.
