Abstract Laccase isoforms from basidiomycetes exhibit a superior redox potential compared to commercially available laccases obtained from ascomycete fungi, rendering them more reactive toward mono-substituted phenols and polyphenolic compounds. However, basidiomycetes present limitations for large-scale culture in liquid media, restraining the current availability of laccases from this fungal class. To advance laccase production from basidiomycetes, a newly designed 14-L low-shear aerated and agitated bioreactor provided enzyme titers up to 23.5 IU/mL from Trametes versicolor cultures. Produced enzymes underwent ultrafiltration and LC/MS-MS characterization, revealing the predominant production of only two out of the ten laccases predicted in the T. versicolor genome. Process simulation and economic analysis using SuperPro designer® suggested that T. versicolor laccase could be produced at US$ 3.60/kIU in a 200-L/batch enterprise with attractive economic parameters and a payback period of 1.7 years. The study indicates that new bioreactors with plain design help to produce low-cost enzymes from basidiomycetes.

Abstract We report the first record of Turdus hauxwelli Lawrence, 1869, Hauxwell’s Thrush, from the state of Goiás, central Brazil, based on photographic and vocal records obtained at Taquaral de Goiás. This new record substantially expands the species’ distribution beyond the Amazonian domain and marks its new easternmost geographical limit. The new record extends this species’ distribution by 650 km from the nearest recent record. We also discuss the importance of this record in understanding the biogeographical affinities of the seasonal forests of central-western Brazil.

Abstract In this work, the fan assisted extraction approach is originally exploited to determine volatile compounds in liquid samples based on the full evaporation technique. The feasibility of this strategy was firstly evaluated using model solutions containing different volatile carbonyl compounds. Different media, volumes of sample, temperatures of extraction, and times of extraction were tested. Linear regressions presenting r > 0.999, intermediate precision values < 6%, and recoveries within 76-95% were attained using a period of extraction of 10 min, a volume of sample solution of 5 µL, and a temperature of extraction of 50 °C. Analyses of brewed coffees were performed. The slopes of the calibration curves obtained using aqueous model solutions and brewed coffee samples were not significantly different. These results revealed no matrix effect under the selected experimental conditions, enabling the use of the external calibration method for quantification purposes. Twenty-four volatile carbonyl compounds were identified in brewed coffee, which elucidates the sensitivity of this approach.

Abstract The accurate classification of non-coding RNA (ncRNA) sequences is pivotal for advanced non-coding genome annotation and analysis, a fundamental aspect of genomics that facilitates understanding of ncRNA functions and regulatory mechanisms in various biological processes. While traditional machine learning approaches have been employed for distinguishing ncRNA, these often necessitate extensive feature engineering. Recently, deep learning algorithms have provided advancements in ncRNA classification. This study presents BioDeepFuse, a hybrid deep learning framework integrating convolutional neural networks (CNN) or bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) networks with handcrafted features for enhanced accuracy. This framework employs a combination of

Abstract In cat-scratch disease (CSD), hematogenous spread may result in atypical presentations. Ocular manifestations develop in a minority of patients, with treatment being important in reducing long-term visual sequelae. Bone infection is rare. We present the case of a 52-year-old woman, with close contact with cats, reporting acute unilateral blurred vision and presenting papilledema, optic disc pallor, and peripapillary hemorrhage. Etiologic study of optic neuritis revealed an elevated positive

Abstract Fungal lectins have enormous biotechnological potential, but limited knowledge about their biochemical and biophysical features prevents their proper use. Herein, we report an innovative alternative to use Ganoderma applanatum lectin (GAL) as a glucose biorecognition element, after identifying the ideal electroanalytical conditions by machine learning studies performed with a homologous agglutinin from the same macrofungus. The research revealed that GAL has moderate resistance to pH (4-8) and temperature (20-60 °C) variations, but its hemagglutinating activity (376.5 HU mg
