Abstract Gastric cancer is one of the most prevalent cancer types worldwide, and its resistance to cancer therapies, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy, has made treating it a major challenge. Paeoniflorin (PF) is one potential pharmacological treatment derived from paeony root. However, in cancer, the molecular mechanisms and biological functions of PF are still unclear. In the present study, we found that PF exerts anti-tumor effects in vivo and in vitro and induces apoptotic cell death through ER stress, calcium (Ca

Abstract Fisetin, a well-known plant flavonol from the natural flavonoid group, is found in traditional medicines, plants, vegetables, and fruits. Fisetin also has anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-tumor effects. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of fisetin in LPS-induced Raw264.7 cells and found that fisetin reduced the LPS-induced production of pro-inflammation markers, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, demonstrating the anti-inflammatory effects of fisetin. Furthermore, this study investigated the anti-cancer effects of fisetin and found that fisetin induced apoptotic cell death and ER stress through intracellular calcium (Ca

Abstract Saikosaponin A is a triterpene saponin and a potentially bioactive compound derived from Bupleurum falcatum L. However, the molecular mechanisms and effects of saikosaponin A in gastric cancer remain unknown. In the present study, I evaluated the effects of saikosaponin A on cell death and endoplasmic reticulum stress via calcium and reactive oxygen species release. Targeting reactive oxygen species with diphenyleneiodonium and N-acetylcysteine inhibited cell death and protein kinase RNA-like ER kinase signaling pathway by down-regulating Nox4 and inducing glucose-regulated protein 78 exosomes. Furthermore, saikosaponin A caused a synergistic inhibitory effect of the epithelial mesenchymal transition phenomenon, indicating the reversible phenotype modulation by epithelial cells under radiation exposure in radiation-resistant gastric cancer cells. These results suggest that saikosaponin A-mediated calcium and reactive oxygen species-induced endoplasmic reticulum stress overcome radio-resistance and induce cell death under radiation in gastric cancer cells. Therefore, saikosaponin A in combination with radiation may be a potential strategy for gastric cancer therapy.

Abstract Systematic reviews offer radiologists a comprehensive synthesis of all relevant evidence pertaining to a specific question, aiding them in shaping their clinical practices. It is crucial for radiologists to familiarize themselves with the methods used in systematic reviews and meta-analyses and to understand the limitations. By doing so, they can effectively appraise and interpret results, enabling them to make informed decisions based on the evidence provided in systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

Abstract In this study, we present our successful fabrication of commercial-grade pure aluminum anode foil (99.5%, 2NAl) with an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure and high hardness, achieved through cold rolling. Under identical rolling conditions, a coarse-grained microstructure with a low hardness was attained from the high-purity Al foil (99.99%, 4NAl). The UFG 2NAl foil exhibited enhanced lithium-ion diffusivity and reduced nucleation and activation overpotentials for forming the β-LiAl phase compared to the 4NAl foil. The high-density grain boundaries in the UFG 2NAl foil facilitated the rapid formation of a uniform β-LiAl phase layer on its surface, thereby mitigating mechanical damage within the β-LiAl phase layer caused by volume changes during the lithiation and delithiation processes. The high hardness of the UFG 2NAl sample effectively prevented macroscopic plastic deformation during cycling, thus preserving the integrity of the β-LiAl phase layer and inhibiting the formation of cracks within the unreacted Al matrix. The collective advantages of reduced overpotential, enhanced Li-ion diffusivity, and high resistance to mechanical damage and plastic deformation in UFG 2NAl contribute to its superior durability and capacity retention compared to the high-purity Al in electrochemical cycling.

Abstract This review addresses the escalating challenge posed by antibiotic resistance, highlighting its profound impact on global public health, including increased mortality rates and healthcare expenditures. The review focuses on the need to adopt the One Health approach to effectively manage antibiotic usage across human, animal, and environmental domains. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are considered as comprehensive strategies that encompass both core and supplementary initiatives aimed at enhancing prudent antibiotic use. The 2021 "Guidelines on Implementing ASP in Korea" introduced such strategies, with a strong emphasis on fostering multidisciplinary and collaborative efforts. Furthermore, the "Core Elements for Implementing ASPs in Korean General Hospitals," established in 2022, provide a structured framework for ASPs, delineating leadership responsibilities, the composition of interdisciplinary ASP teams, a range of interventions, and continuous monitoring and reporting mechanisms. In addition, this review examines patient-centric campaigns such as "Speak Up, Get Smart" and emphasizes the pivotal role of a multidisciplinary approach and international cooperation in addressing the multifaceted challenges associated with antibiotic resistance.
