Abstract Owing to the increasing global demand for carbon resources, pressure on finite materials, including petroleum and inorganic resources, is expected to increase in the future. Efficient utilization of waste resources has become crucial for sustainable resource acquisition for creating the next generation of industries. Rice husks, which are abundant worldwide as agricultural waste, are a rich carbon source with a high silica content and have the potential to be an effective raw material for energy-related and environmental purification materials such as battery, catalyst, and adsorbent. Converting these into valuable resources often requires separation and carbonization; however, these processes incur significant energy losses, which may offset the benefits of using biomass resources in the process steps. This review summarizes and discusses the high value of RHs, which are abundant as agricultural waste. Technologies for separating and converting RHs into valuable resources by hydrothermal carbonization are summarized based on the energy efficiency of the process.

Abstract Background and aim: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a fatal and progressive interstitial lung disease with varying degrees of hypoxemia. Long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) is frequently used to treat hypoxemia, however the prognostic factors for better survival in IPF patients after initiation of LTOT remain unknown.
Methods: We retrospectively investigated favorable factors of survival in consecutive 55 IPF patients with chronic respiratory failure who were introduced LTOT.
Results: The 6-, 12-, 18-, and 24-month survival rates in IPF patients after introduction of LTOT were 70.9%, 49.0%, 45.2%, and 32.3%, respectively. Univariate analysis demonstrated that low Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS) (hazard ratio [HR] 0.482, p=0.043) and treatment with antifibrotic agents (HR 0.401, p=0.013) were associated with favorable survival, while multivariate analysis revealed that treatment with antifibrotic agents was the independent predictor (HR 0.449, p=0.032). Moreover, IPF patients treated with antifibrotic agents with LTOT had significantly longer survival than those without antifibrotic agents (p = 0.0106).
Conclusion: In IPF patients who were introduced LTOT, treatment with antifibrotic agents was the independent factor for favorable survival. Treatment with antifibrotic agents may improve prognosis of IPF even after initiation of LTOT.

Abstract Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the longitudinal MRI characteristic of COVID-19-vaccination-related axillary lymphadenopathy by evaluating the size, T2-weighted signal intensity, and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values.
Methods: COVID-19-vaccination-related axillary lymphadenopathy was observed in 90 of 433 health screening program participants on the chest region of whole-body axial MRIs in 2021, as reported in our previous study. Follow-up MRI was performed at an interval of approximately 1 year after the second vaccination dose from 2022 to 2023. The diameter, signal intensity on T2-weighted images, and ADC of the largest enlarged lymph nodes were measured on chest MRI. The values were compared between the post-vaccination MRI and the follow-up MRI, and statistically analyzed.
Results: Out of the 90 participants who had enlarged lymph nodes of 5 mm or larger in short axis after the second vaccination dose, 76 participants (45 men and 31 women, mean age: 61 years) were enrolled in the present study. The median short- and long-axis diameter of the enlarged lymph nodes was 7 mm and 9 mm for post-vaccination MRI and 4 mm and 6 mm for follow-up MRI, respectively. The median signal intensity relative to the muscle on T2-weighted images decreased (5.1 for the initial post-vaccination MRI and 3.6 for the follow-up MRI, P < .0001). The ADC values did not show a notable change and remained in a normal range.
Conclusion: The enlarged axillary lymph nodes decreased both in size and in signal intensity on T2-weighted images of follow-up MRI. The ADC remained unchanged. Our findings may provide important information to establish evidence-based guidelines for conducting proper assessment and management of post-vaccination lymphadenopathy.

Abstract Both bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) and abaloparatide are used to promote bone formation. However, there is no consensus about their optimal administration. We investigated the optimal administration theory for the pairing of BMP-2 and abaloparatide in a rat spinal fusion model. Group I was only implanted in carriers and saline. Carriers with 3 µg of recombinant human BMP-2 (rhBMP-2) were implanted in other groups. Abaloparatide injections were administered three times a week for group III (for a total amount of 120 µg/kg in a week) and six times a week for group IV (for a total amount of 120 µg/kg in a week) after surgery. They were euthanized 8 weeks after the surgery, and we explanted their spines at that time. We assessed them using manual palpation tests, radiography, high-resolution micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), and histological analysis. We also analyzed serum bone metabolism markers. The fusion rate in Groups III and IV was higher than in Group I, referring to the manual palpation tests. Groups III and IV recorded greater radiographic scores than those in Groups I and II, too. Micro-CT analysis showed that Tbs. Sp in Groups III and IV was significantly lower than in Group I. Tb. N in Group IV was significantly higher than in Group I. Serum marker analysis showed that bone formation markers were higher in Groups III and IV than in Group I. On the other hand, bone resorption markers were lower in Group IV than in Group I. A histological analysis showed enhanced trabecular bone osteogenesis in Group IV. Frequent administration of abaloparatide may be suitable for the thickening of trabecular bone structure and the enhancement of osteogenesis in a rat spinal fusion model using BMP-2 in insufficient doses.

Abstract A 79-year-old male patient underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy, which revealed a reddish lesion, 10mm in diameter, presenting as a surface recess in the angular incisure. He was diagnosed with gastric follicular lymphoma. Positron emission tomography-computed tomography revealed metastasis to the mediastinal lymph node, although the tumor size was small. Hence, we did not administer any treatment and continued following up. After 8 months, multiple enlarged lymphoma lesions in the stomach and a mass with ulceration on the oral side of the duodenal papilla were observed. The tumor had transformed into diffuse large B-cell lymphoma; therefore, chemotherapy was initiated. The patient has remained recurrence-free for 55 months after treatment.
