    Abstract News organizations constitute key sites of science communication between experts and lay audiences, giving many individuals their basic worldview of complex topics like climate change. Previous researchers have studied climate change news coverage to assess accuracy in reporting and potential sources of bias. These studies typically rely on manually coding articles from a handful of prestigious outlets, not allowing comparisons with smaller newspapers or providing enough diversity to assess the influence of partisan orientation or localized climate vulnerability on content production. Making these comparisons, this study indicates that partisan orientation, scale of circulation, and vulnerability to climate change correlate with several topics present in U.S. newspaper coverage of climate change. After assembling a corpus of over 78,000 articles covering two decades from 52 U.S. newspapers that are diverse in terms of geography, partisan orientation, scale of circulation, and objectively measured climate risk, a coherent set of latent topics were identified via an automated content analysis of climate change news coverage. Topic model results indicate that while outlet bias does not appear to impact the prevalence of coverage for most topics surrounding climate change, differences were evident for some topics based on partisan orientation, scale, or vulnerability status, particularly those relating to climate change denial, impacts, mitigation, or resource use. Overall, this paper provides a comprehensive study of U.S. newspaper coverage of climate change and identifies specific topics where outlet bias constitutes an important contextual factor.

    Abstract Background: Due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, sufficient distance between people is absolutely necessary, especially in waiting rooms of medical care institutions. This is frequently difficult to realize due to restricted spatial capacities.
    Objective: This study investigated the possibility of enabling patients to spend the waiting period outside of the waiting room of the ENT outpatient department, in order to reduce the number of patients in the waiting rooms and therefore observe distancing rules. This was realized by the use of a pager system.
    Materials and methods: During the timeframe of 12.5 weeks (04.06.2020-31.08.2020), ENT outpatients were issued with pagers. The patients could thus move freely within the hospital and grounds. The pager system was activated 10-15 min before the appointment, to call patients back to the outpatient ENT clinic. questionnaires were used to evaluate the system and examine patients' acceptance and satisfaction.
    Results: The 137 questionnaires analyzed showed satisfaction with the system, not only regarding distancing rules but also with the more comfortable waiting time.
    Conclusion: Introduction of a pager system for patients could help to meet hygiene and distance rules, and also increase comfort during (often unavoidable) waiting times for patients in the university hospital ENT outpatient department. The long-term use of such a system seems promising.

    Abstract Study objectives: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation is an established therapy for sleep apnea syndrome. Whether or not this therapy on snoring and nighttime noise exposure is effective and how strong this effect may be has not been objectively investigated thus far and was the aim of this study.
    Methods: In 15 participants (14 males; age: 30-72 years; mean: 51.7 years), polysomnography and acoustic measurements were performed before and after hypoglossal nerve stimulation.
    Results: The therapy led to a significant improvement in sleep apnea (apnea-hypopnea index from 35.8 events/h to 11.2 events/h,
    Conclusions: This study was able to show for the first time by means of objective acoustic and psychoacoustic parameters that hypoglossal nerve stimulation can not only cause a significant improvement in sleep apnea but also has a positive effect on snoring and thus noise annoyance experienced by the bed partner.

    Abstract The vasculature along conifer needles is fundamentally different from that in angiosperm leaves as it contains a unique transfusion tissue inside the bundle sheath. In this study, we used specific tracers to identify the pathway of photoassimilates from mesophyll to phloem, and the opposing pathway of nutrients from xylem to mesophyll. For symplasmic transport we applied esculin to the tip of attached pine needles and followed its movement down the phloem. For apoplasmic transport we let detached needles take up a membrane-impermeable contrast agent and used micro-X-ray computed tomography to map critical water exchange interfaces and domain borders. Microscopy and segmentation of the X-ray data enabled us to render and quantify the functional 3D structure of the water-filled apoplasm and the complementary symplasmic domain. The transfusion tracheid system formed a sponge-like apoplasmic domain that was blocked at the bundle sheath. Transfusion parenchyma cell chains bridged this domain as tortuous symplasmic pathways with strong local anisotropy which, as evidenced by the accumulation of esculin, pointed to the phloem flanks as the preferred phloem-loading path. Simple estimates supported a pivotal role of the bundle sheath, showing that a bidirectional movement of nutrient ions and assimilates is feasible and emphasizing the role of the bundle sheath in nutrient and assimilate exchange.

    Abstract The third complementarity-determining region (CDR3) of immunoglobulin variable genes for the heavy chain (VH) has been shown to be shorter in length in hypermutated antibodies than in non-hypermutated antibodies. To determine which components of CDR3 contribute to the shorter length, and if there is an effect of age on the length, we analysed 235 cDNA clones from human peripheral blood of VH6 genes rearranged to immunoglobulin M (IgM) constant genes. There was similar use of diversity (D) and joining (JH) gene segments between clones from young and old donors, and there was similar use of D segments among the mutated and non-mutated heavy chains. However, in the mutated heavy chains, there was increased use of shorter JH4 segments and decreased use of longer JH6 segments compared to the non-mutated proteins. The overall length of CDR3 did not change with age within the mutated and non-mutated categories, but was significantly shorter by three amino acids in the mutated clones compared to the non-mutated clones. Analyses of the individual components that comprise CDR3 indicated that they were all shorter in the mutated clones. Thus, there were more nucleotides deleted from the ends of VH, D, and JH gene segments, and fewer P and N nucleotides added. The results suggest that B cells bearing immunoglobulin receptors with shorter CDR3s have been selected for binding to antigen. A smaller CDR3 may allow room in the antibody binding pocket for antigen to interact with CDRs 1 and 2 as well, so that as the VDJ gene undergoes hypermutation, substitutions in all three CDRs can further contribute to the binding energy.

    Abstract Do temperature anomalies affect political polarization over global warming? Americans’ attitudes about global warming are affected by whether they reside in states experiencing unseasonably warm (or cold) temperatures versus those experiencing milder temperatures. Specifically, in terms of causal attribution, political polarization over global warming is more pronounced in states experiencing temperature anomalies. Using pooled data collected during 2013–2014, this study utilizes logistic regression to explore how temperature anomalies exacerbate the political polarization among Americans over perceptions of whether global warming impacts are immediately evident as well as the attribution of global warming to human activity. Results indicate that very cold or warm temperature anomalies from a 5-year baseline predict perceptions of global warming impacts and exacerbate existing political polarization over the causal attribution of global warming. These effects are particularly noticeable among Democrats. This analysis provides a contribution to understanding how temperature anomalies from the recent past shape the sociophysical context of global warming attitudes.
