    Abstract Vertebral artery (VA)Aneurysms involving the origin of the posterior inferior cerebellar artery (PICA) ,occasionally, induce cerebellum and brainstem infarction due to intraluminal thrombus and calcific VA stenosis. At times, vessel occlusion and revascularization is necessary for successful obliteration of these aneurysms.2 The occipital artery (OA) is often the preferred donor graft for lesions of the posterior fossa. Although most OA-PICA bypasses can be performed using the p3 segment as the recipient site for an end-to-side anastomosis, a more feasible alternative to conventional OA-p3 PICA bypass in cases of high-riding caudal loops , aberrant anatomy or p3 multiple perforators is to free the p1 PICA, transpose it away from the lower cranial nerves, and perform an end-to-end OA-p1 PICA bypass instead. This video captures the dissection of the OA using an orientational anterograde harvesting technique and the end-to-end anastomosis of the OA to the PICA at the p1 segment. This was performed in a 56-year-old man who presented with posterior circulation ischemia from a fusiform aneurysm with calcific vertebral artery stenosis located at the origin of the right PICA. The patient tolerated the procedure well and suffered no major complications related to the operation. He did experience some mild, posterior neck rigidity at the time of his 6-month follow-up, likely due to nerve injury that occurred while harvesting the OA. Overall, the patient remains in good neurologic status 1 year after the operation. The operation proved the feasibility of end-to-end bypass in OA-p1 PICA.

    Abstract To compare the safety and efficacy of clipping and coiling in patients with ruptured anterior circulation aneurysms. A systematic search of four databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase) was conducted to identify comparative articles on endovascular coiling and surgical clipping in patients with ruptured anterior circulation aneurysms. Meta-analyses were conducted using random-effects models. Nineteen studies, including 1983 patients, were included. The meta-analysis showed that neurosurgical clipping was associated with a lower incidence of retreatment (OR:0.28, 95% CI (0.11, 0.70), P = 0.006) than endovascular coiling, which seemed to be a result of incomplete occlusion (OR:0.22, 95% CI (0.11, 0.45), P < 0.001). Neurosurgical clipping was associated with lower mortality (OR:0.45, 95% CI (0.25, 0.82), P = 0.009) at short-term follow-up than endovascular coiling. However, neurosurgical clipping showed a higher incidence of ischemic infarction (OR:2.28, 95% CI (1.44, 3.63), P < 0.001) and a longer length of stay (LOS) (WMD:6.12, 95% CI (4.19, 8.04), P < 0.001) after surgery than endovascular coiling. Furthermore, the pooled results showed no statistically significant differences between the two groups regarding poor outcome, long-term mortality, rebleeding, vasospasm, and hydrocephalus. Evidence from this systematic review illustrates that neurosurgical clipping may be superior to endovascular coiling for ruptured anterior circulation aneurysms. Large-scale RCTs should be conducted to verify these outcomes and provide results according to patient status.

    Abstract Drought and salinity are the main factors limiting agricultural production. Improving crop resistance to relieve land stress is a major challenge in agriculture. The salt-tolerant species Suaeda salsa is a typical indicator of saline soil. It has a strong drought tolerance and can be used as a model plant to study salt and drought tolerance in plants. In this study, transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatic analysis were performed to study gene expression changes in S. salsa under salt and drought stresses, and to screen out differentially expressed genes. The genetic changes were most abundant in cellular processes, metabolic processes, ion binding, signalling, post-translational modifications, protein conversion, and molecular chaperones, suggesting that the above methods may play a significant role in the response of S. salsa to external salt and drought stress. Enrichment analysis showed that carbohydrate metabolic processes, oxidoreductase activity, transmembrane transport, kinase activity, cellular protein modification processes, and ion-binding pathways are involved in the stress response of S. salsa .

    Abstract Understanding the quantum mechanical mechanisms underlying atomic/ionic interfacial processes and phenomena, particularly their dependence on the electronic orbital rearrangement of atoms/ions in an external electric field, remains a significant challenge. This study investigated the asymmetric response of transition metal (TM) cationic orbitals when subjected to an applied electric field. Quantum mechanical calculations were employed to quantify the newly formed hybrid orbitals and evaluate the corresponding orbital energies of the TM cations. Analysis of the quantitative contribution of asymmetric orbital hybridization to TM-surface interactions showed a significant change in orbital energy and increased effective charges of TM cations at the charged surface. This asymmetric response, induced by a negative external electric field generated from the structural charges of clay minerals (e.g., montmorillonite), repels electrons from the outer-shell orbital. This repulsion consequently increases the electron binding energy of the inner-shell orbitals, leading to new surface reactions, polarization-enhanced induction force, and polarization-induced covalent bonding between the TM cations and the charged surface. Our theoretical predictions regarding TM-clay mineral interactions are consistent with the experimental observations of TM cation adsorption. This finding has significant implications for the adsorptive removal of TM cations from wastewaters and for enhancing the catalytic efficiency of TM-surface catalysts. The unique physical and chemical characteristics exhibited by TMs at charged particle surfaces, resulting from their asymmetric response, can play pivotal roles in environmental and chemical engineering.

    Abstract CRISPR/Cas12a-based nucleic acid assays have been increasingly used for molecular diagnostics. However, most current CRISPR/Cas12a-based RNA assays require the conversion of RNA into DNA by preamplification strategies, which increases the complexity of detection. Here, we found certain chimeric DNA-RNA hybrid single strands could activate the trans-cleavage activity of Cas12a, and then discovered the activating effect of split ssDNA and RNA when they are present simultaneously. As proof of concept, split nucleic acid-activated Cas12a (SNA-Cas12a) strategy was developed for direct detection of miR-155. By adding a short ssDNA to the proximal end of the crRNA spacer sequence, we realized the direct detection of RNA targets using Cas12a. With the assistance of ssDNA, we extended the limitation that CRISPR/Cas12a cannot be activated by RNA targets. In addition, by taking advantage of the programmability of crRNA, the length of its binding to DNA and RNA was optimized to achieve the optimal efficiency in activating Cas12a. The SNA-Cas12a method enabled sensitive miR-155 detection at pM level. This method was simple, rapid, and specific. Thus, we proposed a new Cas12a-based RNA detection strategy that expanded the application of CRISPR/Cas12a.

The salt-tolerant species Suaeda salsa is a typical indicator of saline soil. It has a strong drought tolerance and can be used as a model plant to study salt and drought tolerance in plants.
