Abstract This paper examines the fundamental problem of testimony. Much of what we believe to know we know in good part, or even entirely, through the testimony of others. The problem with testimony is that we often have very little on which to base estimates of the accuracy of our sources. Simulations with otherwise optimal agents examine the impact of this for the accuracy of our beliefs about the world. It is demonstrated both where social networks of information dissemination help and where they hinder. Most importantly, it is shown that both social networks and a common strategy for gauging the accuracy of our sources give rise to polarisation even for entirely accuracy motivated agents. Crucially these two factors interact, amplifying one another's negative consequences, and this side effect of communication in a social network increases with network size. This suggests a new causal mechanism by which social media may have fostered the increase in polarisation currently observed in many parts of the world.

Abstract Waste management is still one of the leading global challenges in the 21st century. From the European Union's point of view, the Waste Framework Directive obliges businesses and households to recycle at least 55% of their municipal waste by 2025 and to reach 65% in 2035. Hence there is a great need to seek new solutions for the reuse of various waste materials. One of the most widely used wastes is their utilization as fillers or reinforcements in the metal- or polymer-based composites. The reuse of wastes for the production of tribological materials gives not only environmental benefits related to the transformation of waste into raw materials but also may improve the mechanical and tribological properties of such materials. Moreover, the use of waste reduces the production costs resulting from the lower price of filler materials and longer service life of developed products. The purpose of the current review is, therefore, aimed at the evaluation of the reuse of agricultural, industrial and postconsumer wastes as reinforcements in the composites used for tribological applications. The tribological performance (wear rate, coefficient of friction) of both monolithic and hybrid composites reinforced with waste materials was a particular subject of interest in this review.

Abstract Consecutive serum samples obtained from 20 homosexual men during symptomatic primary HIV infection were examined by a variety of IgG and IgM antibody assays. All sera obtained 2-5 weeks after onset of disease contained IgM anti-HIV as demonstrated by an IgM antibody capture assay. The IgM antibodies appeared during the 2 first weeks of illness, reached peak titres at 2-5 weeks and declined thereafter to undetectable levels at 2-3 months after the onset of disease. By contrast, IgG anti-HIV appeared later, during the second week after the onset of symptoms, and did not reach maximal levels until the IgM response had waned. The first IgM antibodies to appear were directed against gag proteins. IgM antibodies against env antigens were found less frequently and later in the course of the disease. These results suggest that IgM antibody determination may be helpful in the diagnosis of early HIV infection as a possible addition to the combined use of antigen detection and a second generation ELISA, which, in the present study, was found to be highly reliable for diagnostic purposes.

Abstract Intraspecific chemical communication in frogs is understudied and the few published cases are limited to externally visible and male-specific breeding glands. Frogs of the family Odontobatrachidae, a West African endemic complex of five morphologically cryptic species, have large, fatty gland-like strands along their lower mandible. We investigated the general anatomy of this gland-like strand and analysed its chemical composition. We found the strand to be present in males and females of all species. The strand varies in markedness, with well-developed strands usually found in reproductively active individuals. The strands are situated under particularly thin skin sections, the vocal sac in male frogs and a respective area in females. Gas-chromatography/mass spectrometry and multivariate analysis revealed that the strands contain sex- and species-specific chemical profiles, which are consistent across geographically distant populations. The profiles varied between reproductive and non-reproductive individuals. These results indicate that the mandibular strands in the Odontobatrachidae comprise a so far overlooked structure (potentially a gland) that most likely plays a role in the mating and/or breeding behaviour of the five

    Abstract 22

    23

Even for lightweight applications, there is a strong urge towards using bio-based materials, although the properties that can be achieved to date mostly prevent their use in the sense of high-performance materials. Additional barriers are caused by incompletely automated production processes and infrastructures for bio-based materials. The Fraunhofer Institutes for Casting, Composite and Processing Technology (IGCV), for Wood Research (WKI) and for Building Physics (IBP) are therefore investigating the use of mycelium as a sandwich material for fiber-reinforced composite profiles produced by using the continuous pultrusion process. The focus is on whether a mycelium material represents a competitive and sustainable alternative to wood- and oil-based sandwich cores in order to contribute to a sustainable added value with high relevance for multiple industries.
