    Abstract This study investigated the effects of the Cong Rong Shu Jing (CRSJ) compound on endoplasmic reticulum stress in a rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD). A total of 40 rats were subcutaneously injected with rotenone-sunflower oil emulsion into the back of the neck to establish a rat model of PD. These PD rats were randomly divided into low-, medium-, and high-dose groups (intragastric administration of 0.5, 1, and 2 g/kg CRSJ, respectively) and a model group (intragastric administration of the solvent; 10 rats per group). Furthermore, 10 rats each were attributed to the control and vehicle groups (both received intragastric administration of the CRSJ solvent, and the vehicle group were injected additionally with sunflower oil alone). A traction test was conducted two times, after the PD model establishment and after 14 days of CRSJ gavage. The numbers of tyrosine hydroxylase- (TH-) positive cells and the dopamine levels in the substantia nigra were assessed using immunohistochemistry and high-performance liquid chromatography, respectively. Western blotting detected the expression levels of α-synuclein, endoplasmic reticulum stress pathways-related proteins, cerebral dopamine neurotrophic factor (CDNF), mesencephalic astrocyte-derived neurotrophic factor (MANF), and phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway-related proteins. Compared with the model group, the number of TH-positive cells in the substantia nigra was increased in the CRSJ groups. The expression levels of α-synuclein and the endoplasmic reticulum stress pathways-associated proteins glucose regulatory protein 78, inositol-requiring enzyme 1, apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 1, phosphorylated c-Jun N-terminal kinase, and caspase-12 were reduced. However, CRSJ administration elevated the expression levels of the neurotrophic factors CDNF and MANF, as well as those of p-PI3K and p-AKT.     Abstract Cistanche species, known as Rou Cong-Rong in Chinese, are an endangered wild species and are mainly distributed in the arid lands and warm deserts of northwestern China. Within Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Herba Cistanche is applied as a tonic and/or in a formula for chronic renal disease, impotence, female infertility, morbid leucorrhea, profuse metrorrhagia, and senile constipation. The chemical constituents of Herba Cistanche mainly consist of volatile oils, non-volatile phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs), iridoids, lignans, alditols, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides. There have been an increasing number of studies focusing on its bio-activities, including antioxidation, neuroprotection, and antiaging. The objective of this review is to introduce this herb to the world. Its taxonomy, distribution, and corresponding biological functions and molecular mechanisms are addressed in this review.

    Abstract Cistanches Herba is a medicinal plant that has tonification properties and is commonly used in Asia. Owing to the imbalance between supply and demand, adulterants are frequently added for profit. However, there is no regulatory oversight because quality control tools are not sufficient for identifying heavily processed products. Thus, a novel molecular tool based on nucleotide signatures and species-specific primers was developed. The ITS2 regions from 251 Cistanches Herba and adulterant samples were sequenced. On the basis of SNP sites, four nucleotide signatures within 30~37 bp and six species-specific primers were developed, and they were validated by artificial experimental mixtures consisting of six different species and different ratios. This method was also applied to detect 66 Cistanches Herba products on the market, including extracts and Chinese patent medicines. The results demonstrated the utility of nucleotide signatures in identifying adulterants in mixtures. The market study revealed 36.4% adulteration: 19.7% involved adulteration with Cynomorium songaricum or Cistanche sinensis, and 16.7% involved substitution with Cy. songaricum, Ci. sinensis, or Boschniakia rossica. The results also revealed that Cy. songaricum was the most common adulterant in the market. Thus, we recommend the use of species-specific nucleotide signatures for regulating adulteration and verifying the quality assurance of medicinal product supply chains, especially for processed products whose DNA is degraded.

    Abstract According to the "Kidney has its orfice in the ear" in TCM theory, the authors adopted Bushen Cong-er tablet, a TCM preparation with the treating principles of the Kidney reinforcing and blood circulation promoting to remove stasis as well as to open up the apertures in treating 310 cases of sensorineural hearing loss. The results showed that therapeutical effect was satisfactory. The total effectve rate was 71.9%. Animal experiment also demonstrate the drug could prevent and cure the aminoglycoside antibiotic ototoxic hearing loss, could adjust the cochlear cyclic neucleotides as well as its SOD level and reduce the LPO level, raise the thyroid function and the function of sexual gland.

    Abstract Malicious software (malware), in various forms and variants, continues to pose significant threats to user information security. Researchers have identified the effectiveness of utilizing API call sequences to identify malware. However, the evasion techniques employed by malware, such as obfuscation and complex API call sequences, challenge existing detection methods. This research addresses this issue by introducing CAFTrans, a novel transformer-based model for malware detection. We enhance the traditional transformer encoder with a one-dimensional channel attention module (1D-CAM) to improve the correlation between API call vector features, thereby enhancing feature embedding. A word frequency reinforcement module is also implemented to refine API features by preserving low-frequency API features. To capture subtle relationships between APIs and achieve more accurate identification of features for different types of malware, we leverage convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of CAFTrans, achieving state-of-the-art performance on the mal-api-2019 dataset with an F1 score of 0.65252 and an AUC of 0.8913. The findings suggest that CAFTrans improves accuracy in distinguishing between various types of malware and exhibits enhanced recognition capabilities for unknown samples and adversarial attacks.

    Abstract Diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) represents a distinct myocardial disorder elicited by diabetes mellitus, characterized by aberrations in myocardial function and structural integrity. This pathological condition predominantly manifests in individuals with diabetes who do not have concurrent coronary artery disease or hypertension. An escalating body of scientific evidence substantiates the pivotal role of programmed cell death (PCD)-encompassing apoptosis, autophagy, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, and necroptosis-in the pathogenic progression of DCM, thereby emerging as a prospective therapeutic target. Additionally, numerous non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been empirically verified to modulate the biological processes underlying programmed cell death, consequently influencing the evolution of DCM. This review systematically encapsulates prevalent types of PCD manifest in DCM as well as nascent discoveries regarding the regulatory influence of ncRNAs on programmed cell death in the pathogenesis of DCM, with the aim of furnishing novel insights for the furtherance of research in PCD-associated disorders relevant to DCM.
